Azeri sisters are doing it for themselves. Well, with a little help from the government.
In a wide-ranging interview with the Azeri Press Agency, Aysel Teymourzadeh has revealed that the government has given her a two bedroom apartment in central Baku following her third-place finish at Eurovision. The new digs will, no doubt, seem lavish for the 20-year old who is also an international relations major at the Azerbaijan University of Languages. But her new apartment and burgeoning fame throughout Europe won’t derail Aysel from her long-term goals. “I couldn’t go to the university on the eve of the contest and I can’t go there now, but I will return to my university soon. I don’t stop the education,” she said. “I will be a singer and diplomat as well.” Wiwi is confident that Aysel’s beauty (and short skirts) will be an asset while brokering many a peace deal.
Aysel also expressed joy that Azerbaijan finished higher than any former Soviet Republic—a fact that isn’t lost on the Azeri masses who now hound Aysel for autographs and pictures. “Azerbaijan is still celebrating it,” she said. “I can’t take to the street, everyone approaches me. I understand their happiness and don’t say ‘No.’” (Aysel, darling, always saying yes is a very slippery slope. Believe me, Wiwi knows. . .).
Lastly, Aysel is already contemplating a bid for Eurovision 2010: “I was happy that I won third place among the serious participants and was welcomed by the Azerbaijan’s leadership. I wish to feel that again.” Wiwi thinks it might be better for Aysel to wait a few years before grinding on the Eurovision stage once more. Look at what happened to Chiara (second in 2005; 22nd in 2009) and Sakis Rouvas (third in 2004; seventh in 2009). Eurovision fans don’t like to reward previous contestants. And in any case, the world needs some time to cool off from all your Azeri heat.
