Last year Latvia’s Aisha had the worst lyrics at Eurovision. Her turn at existentialism made absolutely no sense. “What for are we dreaming?/ What for are we losing? Only Mr God knows why/ But his phone today is out of range.” WTF!?! She finished last in the semi-finals. She didn’t deserve that placement. She should have been disqualified!

So all of Latvia has its fingers crossed hoping this year’s entry won’t be such a disaster. To help ensure that, LTV, the Latvian state broadcaster, appointed a professional jury to narrow the field from 71 entries to these 20 semi-finalists. They’ll compete in two semi-finals on February 5 and February 12. The top three songs as determined by televotes, and two more songs chosen by a professional jury, will advance to the final. Then on February 19 the 10 songs that didn’t qualify will battle it out for two more places in the final—one determined by televoting, one by the jury. It all comes to a head at the grand finale on February 26.
