Katya Ryabova to Represent Russia at Junior Eurovision — Again 6

Katya Ryabova, who finished second at Junior Eurovision 2009, will fly the flag for Russia in Yerevan this November.

By allowing Katya to return to the contest, the European Broadcasting Union has given a strong signal that it will eventually do away with its rule forbidding previous contestants from competing. Contestants at Junior Eurovision range in age from 10 to 15, so it’s thought a previous appearance gives them a huge advantage coping with the pressure of live TV. What’s more, previous contestants like Katya have gone on to achieve popularity throughout the Russian-speaking world, and that will surely translate into votes among impressionable kids.

Regardless of whether she has an unfair advantage, 13-year old Ryabova will be a welcome addition in Yerevan. Back in 2009 she proved you’re never to young to enjoy schlager with her catchy (if formulaic) number “Malenky Prints” (Little Prince). This year she’s gone for mid-tempo electro-pop with the much more mature number “Kak Romeo i Dzhulyetta” (Like Romeo and Juliet). Thankfully she won’t be re-enacting any suicide scenes on stage. The most dramatic portion of her performance from the national selection is that she hops on some guy’s scooter. Seriously, I’d expect more from Russia — where are the Alexey Vorobyov-inspired LED-jackets?

Be sure to review Katya’s performance at Junior Eurovision 2009. Don’t miss the introduction where she channels and evil Soviet police guard. “My name is Katya, and you will vote for me.” She’s a real performer, this one!
