Ireland: Can Donna McCaul Beat Jedward at Eurosong 2012? 10

Lesbian and former Eurovision contestant Donna McCaul has announced that she will attempt to slay Jedward at Eurosong 2012, the Irish national selection.

For several weeks high-profile acts, including Sharon Condon and Nikki Kavanagh, have admitted publicly that they feared facing off against Jedward in the national final. But today Donna—who competed at Eurovision 2005 with her brother Joe—posted this on Facebook:

Ok guys i have been chosen as one of the 5 acts for euro song 2012 to Represent Ireland in the eurovision this year. I am looking for all of your support and votes in feb when the songs will be announced live on tv. Thanks guys

The term “lamb to the slaughter” rings a bell—and not just because I think Donna is going to be killed. In 2005, the Irish Independent dismissed Donna & Joe ahead of Eurovision, saying that they were unpolished, unprofessional, and unlikely to advance past the semi-final.

“Everybody knows that the McCauls don’t stand a chance, yet we’re sending them over to the event in Kiev like lambs to the slaughter,” the paper wrote at the time. “Red-haired and bespectacled Joseph is positively post-pubescent at just 16 years of age and Donna looks like she needed a good haircut and a set of braces a long time ago.”

The duo finished 14th in their semi-final, starting a sad tradition of early Irish exits. If you watch the video below, you’ll have an idea why.

In any case, there are several reasons why we think Jedward should head to Eurovision over Donna.

1. There are two of them.

2. They are hot. (See photos here)

3. They have big hair. It’s not purple.

4. They’re famous throughout Europe.

5. They actually made the finals the year they competed at Eurovision.
