Ukraine: Gaitana Under Attack From Right-Wing Extremists 3
Given that Ukraine consistently places in the Top 5 at Eurovision, you’d think critics would think twice before questioning the nation’s Eurovision candidate. Well apparently the ultra-conservative Svoboda (Freedom) Party didn’t get the message. Senior member Yuriy Syrotyuk has publicly blasted Gaitana-Lurdes Essami—the nation’s only Congolese-Ukrainian celebrity and its contestant for Eurovision 2012. Sadly, his objections have nothing to do with her song.
“Gaitana is not an organic representative of the Ukrainian culture,” the pig-headed Syrotyuk told the Kyiv Post on February 21. He went on to explain that “as we want to be accepted to the European Union, [Eurovision] could be our opportunity to show the Europeans that we are also a European nation. We need to show our originality…Gaitana, who represents another race, will provoke an association of Ukraine as a country of a different continent.”

Gaitana: She is Ukraine
It’s a ridiculous argument, especially given that Gaitana was born and raised in Ukraine. Eduard Klym, Gaitana’s husband and producer, is disgusted. “It doesn’t even hurt,” he said in response. “We just feel shame for our society.” Walid Harfouche, deputy head of the state-run UT-1 channel and co-organizer of the national selection, also defended Gaitana. “On Feb. 18 everyone felt that the song is strong and positive,” he said. “Gaitana herself is full of positive energy. It was a real feast.”
And the team at WiwiBloggs.Com wants to dig in! We are publicly declaring our support for Gaitana here and now. Eurovision is about love, y’all. We were dismayed to see another sister, Stella Mwangi, flop in Dusseldorf, but sincerely hope that the same doesn’t happen to Gaitana this year. Girl can dance, and girl can sing! We look forward to hearing “Be My Guest” in the Final!
WE ARE ALL AFRO-UKRAINIAN TONIGHT!
Love, Wiwi, Vebooboo, Meows and Deban xoxo
P.S. Yuriy is a douche bag. And he can’t be our guest.
Feel the power that is Gaitana! Here she is singing “Be My Guest”:
