Albania, Rona Nishliu, 3

When we spoke to Rona Nishliu at the Eurovision in Concert event in Amsterdam, one thing became very clear: girl has got a big brain. Well she has channeled all her brain power into a fierce marketing campaign, and joined the ranks of other PR-savvy contestants by releasing a jazz version of her entry “Suus.” That’s right. Just in case some of you don’t like the dramatic dirge style of her original entry, she’s re-cast it with a 1920s, soul vibe. It’s also in English. What do you think of the jazz version? Does Rona have a chance at ESC with the original version?  Or should she be competing with this instead?

I’ve been listening to this since it was first released, as well as the official version, and I appreciate and enjoy both. My ideal for the contest would be a combination based primarily on the official version, but with occasional slides into jazz harmony and timing in the backing track and bluesy/soulful vocal expression — Not necessarily at the same time, so the straight and the slippery can run against each other a bit. It should be in Albanian. Some lines work well in English, but I have mixed feelings about going bilingual; I feel that English would stick out… Read more »
