Depending on who you are, Esma & Lozano’s “Imperija” is either an ingenious blend of folk and pop—or a hot mess. We haven’t yet found the lyrics in English, so aren’t totally sure what they’re singing about….or what a young pop star and an old Gypsy Queen have to say to each other. But we love the trippy video they’ve produced. Twelve points if you can count all of Esma’s outfit changes!

What do you think of the song? Dream or nightmare? BMW or Soviet-era Lada? Let us know in the comments box below! (And if you speak or read Macedonian, can you please clue us in to what this song is about?)

Vlatko:
Odam,cekoram po nebo,
Letam jas niz vremeto,
I koga zaspivam,
Pesni jas sonuvam

Backvokals;
Ejgidi more dejgidi,
Nasi pesni ubavi

Esma:
Zivotot e muzika,
Energija,
Nasata imperija

Refren:

Imperija,imperija,
Muzika caruva na zemjata,
Imperija,imperija,
Najmokna sila na planetata

Vlatko:
Koga spie cela vselena,
Peam vo nokite,
Gi dopiram svezdite
So krilja na notite

@Joyces. Yeah, It’s good that they’re responding to criticism, I only hope they don’t get panicked into something worse.

This song will be replaced by another song, it looks like it is the trend from 2013 to change the song when it was chosen!

Watching their video, it is all so tremendously kitsch that becomes almost cult!!!

Here you are:

Vlatko:
I walk, I walk through the skies,
I fly through the times,
And when I fall asleep,
I dream of music

Backvokals;
Ejgidi more dejgidi (Macedonian words which can’t be translated, Ninanajna-style),
Our beautiful songs

Esma:
Life is music,
Energy
Our empire

Refren:

Empire, empire,
Earth’s a Music Kingdom
Empire, empire,
the strongest power on Earth

Vlatko:
When the whole universe sleeps,
I sing in the nights,
I reach for the stars,
With wings of musical notes.

Macedonians don’t like it, but the thing is you to like it, not us. 🙂

The song(chorus) is about the empire of music on the earth , the empire which is the most powerful strength on the planet

I really like it! Not going to be one of my top three, but certainly a song to listen to more than once. Chorus is quite catchy.

Definitely a dream; a beautiful, meandering dream while dozing in the shade of a beach myrtle. Vlatko has exceeded my expectations in this composition. Unfortunately, that could be a difficult sell at ESC. It’s going to depend a lot on Esma and Losano’s vocal skill and charisma to connect with the listener. It looks to me like they both have what it takes. I’m very happy with the Macedonian lyrics. Not just because they sound good, but because we actually do understand some words well enough for them to resonate and contribute to the mood. Don’t we like freedom of… Read more »

sorry Wiwi, I don’t speak any macedonian either, the song is not a dream and also not a nightmare I think. But the singer Esma does not make this song better, I prefer only the male singer here!

simply terrible.

It’s a catchy song but it also depends on the live performance if FYR Macedonia are to do well this year.

Unfortunately, all the lyrics in the song will be 100% Macedonian, so it’s risky. Especially with those such as WiwiBloggs and myself that doesn’t have the slightest clue on what it is or what the song is about.
