Birgit Oigemeel’s “Et uus saaks alguse” only finished seventh with our readers, but it finished first among Estonians. Do you think they made the right choice?

For the first time in a long time the winner of Eesti Laul doesn’t feel that original. Getter Jaani, Urban Symphony and Malcolm Lincoln were all totes unique. Ott Lepland showed up with a mainstream number, but he sang the life out of that thing. Birgit’s offering is a lot more meh and inspires complete indifference. She can sing—oh yes she can—but her voice is kind of wasted on this generic ballad.

Grete Paia, who finished first with our readers, finished second in the actual contest.

You can read the lyrics and English translation to the winning song below.

Estonian lyics:

Ma mäletan veel kui tuli mu hinge
et jääda see tunne nii suur
samas nüüd seisan ma teel
vaadates südame sisse, seal viliseb tuul

Aga tean ma tean
kõik võib muuta heaks
iga uks mis kord sulgub
see avaneb taas

Veel sulab jää ja õide puhkeb raagus puu
iga lõpp ei ole muud kui algus uus
on vaja ööd et päev tooks valguse
et uus saaks alguse
mis möödund jäägu kaugele
et uus saaks taas alguse

Kaardin avaneb taas
on algamas järgmine vaatus
kus tõusta saan maast
sama hing
kuid uus mäng veel ees
muudetud saab minu saatus
saab uueks mu tee

Ja ma tean ma tean
kõik võib muuta heaks
iga uks mis kord sulgub
see avaneb taas

Really rough English translation (we are waiting on the official English-language version)

I still remember when I came out of my soul
it feels so great to stay
Now, I’m standing in the same way
Looking into the heart, there’s the whistling wind

But I know I know
can make all the
every time the door closes
It will open again

More ice melts and breaks bare tree blossom
every end is a new beginning more than
it is necessary to bring the night to day light
that could be the beginning of a new
Let this be a measure of the far
A new beginning that could be

Cards will be returned
The next act is about to begin
I get up in the land
the soul
but the new game yet to come
My fate will be changed
is my new path

And I know I know
can make all the
every time the door closes
It will open again

More ice melts and breaks bare tree blossom
every end is a new beginning more than
it is necessary to bring the night to day light
that could be the beginning of a new
Let this be a measure of the far
A new beginning that could be re

More ice melts and breaks bare tree blossom
every end is a new beginning more than
it is necessary to bring the night to day light
that could be the beginning of a new
Far be that far

Ice melts and breaks bare tree blossom
every end is a new beginning more than
it is necessary to bring the night to day light
that could be the beginning of a new
Let this be a measure of the far
A new beginning that could be
A new beginning that could be

Unfortunately it was not Winny Puhh. They would have stirred Eurovision up alone with their perfomance. And their song wasnt worse than “Et uus saaks alguse”

It was certainly out of the unexpected, but THANK GOD at least it wasn’t Winny Puhh!

You know I like my cheese, but this is too cheesy even for me. I was bummed that Winny Puhh lost, they were the most memorable act in Estonia this year by a thousand miles. Yes, they were a gimmick or whatever, but they were fun and they had their audience, just as Lordi had theirs in 2006. Now everyone’s going to compare Birgit with Ott (if the comments below are an indication) and with other ballads this year, she’s in the more difficult semi-final, and she will lose on all fronts.

There really isn’t much to discuss with this song. Yes, she has a great voice and she’s pretty to look at, but in what is becoming a bland ballad-heavy year, her song is just…nothing. ‘Kuula’ was magic and got me straight away (and Ott can still have me if he wants) but I can’t see this growing to be anything but a pleasant filler.

I guess singing a good song perfectly with a lovely voice counts for something after all.
Perhaps “Kuula”s success had some influence, although I don’t see Birgit pushing the performance as aggressively as Ott did.
But she might have to for this song to make any impact in Malmo.
