Not long ago Hersiana Matmuja won Festivali i Këngës 52 with the song “Zemërimi i një nate”. That means she will fly the Albanian flag at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen. We have a feeling that most of y’all don’t know what “Zemërimi i një nate” actually means, so Ramadan Besim, our Albania correspondent, has kindly translated the lyrics into English. He’s says they’re beautiful. Let’s see if you agree!

Just so you know, the song is all about thinking before you speak. As Hersiana recently told Ramadan, “Think for one night because you’ll wake up clearer in the morning, and the anger will be gone.”

“Zemërimi i një nate” / “One Night’s Anger”
Albanian lyrics and English translation

E do, s’e do // Want it or not
fjalën e fundit mos e mendo // don’t you think that final word
dysho, beso // suspect, believe
mikun kurrë ti mos e lendo // don’t you hurt that friend,
se ja vjen një ditë, // cause there comes a day,
dite e re që do ta kërkosh // a new day that you’ll be looking for
qetësohu një natë, // calm down for a night,
mendoje pak gjatë // think about it a little longer

Ti largo zemërimin nga mendja jote // Take away the anger from your heart
që ç’do mëngjes është më i zgjuar se ç’do mbrëmje // every morning is wiser than any night
mos lejo ç’mendurinë e një zemre // don’t let the madness of a heart,
mendohu dhe pak, // think a little more,
harroje ket natë // forget this night

Kujto, harro, // Remember, forget
fjalën e fundit mos e lësho // don’t you say that final word
mos u nxito // don’t rush
miqësinë ti mos e lëndo // don’t you ruin that friendship
se ja vjen një ditë që miqësinë ti do ta kërkosh // cause there comes a day when friendship you’ll be looking for
mos mbaj kaq inat, // don’t keep so much ire
mos mbaj zemra plagë // don’t let your heart catch on fire

Ti largo zemërimin nga mendja jote // Take away the anger from your heart,
që ç’do mëngjes është më i zgjuar se ç’do mbrëmje // every morning is wiser than any night
mos lejo ç’mendurinë e një zemre // don’t let the madness of a heart
mendohu dhe pak, // think a little more,
harroje kët natë // forget this night

(Prit edhe pak, mos nxitohesh) // (Wait a bit, just a bit, don’t you rush)
më ler ta them një fjalë // let me say a word
(prit dhe pak se kam frikë mospendohesh) // (wait a bit, I’m afraid you’ll regret it)
le të dal ku të dal // let it be, whatever may come
(vjen nje ditë qe me miqtë ti do takohesh) // .(comes a day, your friends, you will meet)
më mirë harroje, // better forget about it
Dhe miku do ta falë // And friend will forgive

Ti largo zemërimin nga mendja jote // Take away the anger from your heart
që ç’do mëngjes është më i zgjuar se ç’do mbrëmje // every morning is wiser than any night
mos lejo ç’mendurinë e një zemre mendohu dhe pak, // don’t let the madness of a heart,
mendoje pak gjatë, // think a little more,
harroje këtë natë, mendoje pak gjatë, // think a little more, forget this night
harroje këte natë, mendoje pak gjatë, // think a little more, forget this night
harroje këtë natë, mendoje pak gjatë, // think a little more, forget this night
harroje këtë natë // forget this night

What do you think of the song? Did you guess what she was singing about in advance?

Without understanding what she’s singing, the faces she makes are how I imagine my different faces are while on the toilet. I hope I’m not the only one thinking this. It’s the only think about while watching the vid.

The song is great the way it is. The music was created for these lyrics and for this way of sounding. The ones who like to understand the lyrics, here’s the blog and the net. I really hope we have a good ranking, cause we’ve always sent good songs (or at least ok songs).

Remember when Greta & Jonsi tried translating their song for a wider audience? Didn’t do them much good.

Broadcasters usually translate the song titles into their native language. If only the title were changed to something less misleading, understanding the language would not matter as much.

I hope this song wins. Albania is constantly sending great songs! My biggest fear is that this will turn out like Aurela Gace and “Feel The Passion”. A fantastic song ending up not making it through to the finals 🙁

I am strongly hoping this remains in Albanian. Unfortunately, translating lyrics into another language is usually painful for the simple reason that it’s hard to shove new lyrics into an existing melody. Hersi said in interviews with other ESC sites that she is considering having it translated because she wants a wider audience to understand the message, but a great performance captivates regardless of literal understanding, as Rona demonstrated two years ago. Finally, anybody can send a song in English. Languages that the international audience doesn’t hear or even hear about often are precious and should be celebrated. I fell… Read more »

I quiet like this song! In my opinion it’s ”Suus” light.. For me personally it could have been some extra more darker then this, but I hope it will at least reach the final!!

I don’t agree that the song should be angrier – that would essentially contradict the tone of the lyrics for me. I think they should keep this one in Albanian – the lyrics are very nice as they are, and a translation to English would probably make the whole thing fall flat or sound shallower (like “Never Forget” for Iceland in 2012).

Even before the revamp I already love this. I too hope that it will remain in Albanian, certainly not only because it would keep its authenticity but because it is a very unique sounding language.

Off-topic, but once you hear it, you’ll realise.

I do hope they keep it in Albanian. If they translate it, no matter how good Hersi’s English is (I don’t even know how well she speaks it, if at all), it might come out hokey and ruin this beautiful song. I know it is hard to predict a placement with only three songs, but I see a top 10 placement for this. It is very much like “Molitva”. It has very strong backing vocals, a nicely paced buildup of tension, and a nice (and not clichéd) melody for a ballad. You can hear the pain in her voice as… Read more »

I think it should be performed 80% in English, and the remaining 20% in Albanian, that way it could be bilingual 🙂 Also, we want a music video for the “bilingual” version 😀

This song was my favourite at FiK.
Knowing only the title in English, I had some suspicions about the lyrics, so it’s a relief to know what they say. I love the sound of Albanian, but I think some clues about the message in English would be helpful in this case.

I like the song and it was my second choice in FiK this year. Right, now it’s my favourite compared to the other songs released so far. The lyrics are beautiful and I like it especially sung in Albanian, kinda like how “Suus” sounds so much better in Albanian than in English. Do you know if there’s any plans to have the song performed in English at Eurovision?

Not bad, but this song should be angrier. It should have more rock-chords and more dramatic instrumentals. I’ll wait for the revamp to make a decision. Could end up way better (2012) or just fall flat (2013)
