Aarzemnieki may not know how to bake a cake, but they sure do know how to bake an upset. The group, fronted by loveable German Jöran Steinhauer, overcame competition from more established Latvian acts including Samanta Tina, Olga Rajecka, and Dons to win the right to sing in Copenhagen. Now they’re keeping the momentum going and have released the official video for their number “Cake to Bake”.
The song isn’t just about flour, sugar, and a bit of icing. Here’s how Jöran describes it.
The idea of the video is the same as for the song – a person on their own is not able to know everything that is why they occasionally need to ask for help, which is especially challenging for men.
In addition, in the moment when people are ready to ask for assistance, the others are really willing to show their support and give a hand. It is exactly what has happened during the video shooting. The video is shot in Open Air museum, in a very Latvian environment, because I think that Latvia and its nature offer so much for people to be happy. It has to be shown to others. The song is written in the way it is possible to sing at any time and any place having just some musical instruments and good friends around.

I just realised that this particular track from the Eurovision 2014 Semi Final 1 line-up contained some swearing. The audio content of the video contained Latvian swearing. I will not say what it meant in English here, but if you look on my website soon, it will be there in a dressed down format.
Love this song. Hope it qualifies for the lols. They did capture that happiness during their Dziesma performance, but yeah, the bigger stage is gonna be intimidating for this number, unless they up their staging. Problem is that it works so well with simplicity, but they’ll look too tiny if it’s a really giant stage.
Yeah, ESCtoday said the stage will be “Moscow-large”, a.k.a. way too damn big!!!
OMG I agree with Dhani 😉 I agree with both Robyn and Sopon as well. I was at the Latvian Final and it worked really well there, but not sure how it will be in CPH in a much bigger arena. Fingers crossed though 🙂
However, this isn’t a song that will work in a large-scale setting. It would work better at a summer camp.
In this world full of gender feminism, it is nice to see someone caring about the problems men face from gender roles.

Awesome. I figured that this is what the song is about – men are often convinced by society not to ask for help, and to be able to do everything on their own. It’s part of becoming stronger to know when to kick back and admit that you ought to collaborate. Music is also so much more fun with other people. I really love songs like this that are really conducive to a jam session with others – Sjonni’s Friends’ Coming Home is another example. I love the lyrics…. It’s very simple but it’s very related. I love how songs on Eurovision this year deal with general, social, and other personal issues and not just focused about “I love you, you love me, let’s make love tonight, and feel the rhythm of my heart” or something like that. Hats off to Iceland, United Kingdom, France, Spain, and now Latvia for delivering songs like this..
I adore this song and really hope it qualifies. It’s one of the catchiest songs in the first semi.
btw, the lyrics are not “Tut-tut-tut-tut-ta-coo-ca-coo-ca” it’s “cep, cep, cep, cep, cep kuuku” They are Latvian words.
They wont qualify with this song, because many think ti’s bullshit. But, in my opinion, better than Moldova, Portugal and Georgia. And people in my country seem to like it, so Latvia will defienitly get points from the Netherlands ^_^
