Sweden: Måns Zelmerlöw apologises after gay comments on “Pluras kök”

Editor’s note (16 March 2015): This story was published in March 2014, shortly after the “Pluras kök” program aired in Sweden. However, in recent days European media have cited this story and reported events as if it occurred just before Melodifestivalen 2015. This is not the case. Måns has already apologised and the Swedish public has moved on. After spending time with Måns in Stockholm, we can confirm he is very comfortable with members of the LGBT community.

Måns Zelmerlöw has been a media darling since he broke through in the 2005 season of Idol, eventually placing 5th. Then he had a few high-profile turns at Melodifestivalen. And last year we featured his efforts to set up a new charity. But it looks like 2014 is going to be less about smooth sailing and more about controversy.

On Saturday Måns appeared on the popular TV programme “Pluras kök“, during which a group of celebrities gather to eat dinner with the host and have it all recorded. Måns found himself in a debate about homosexuality. He explained that “it isn’t equally natural for men to want to sleep with one another” and called homosexuality an “avvikelse”, which can best be translated as an abnormality. He proceeded to explain that “there isn’t anything wrong with it at all, buMans Zelmerlowt the more natural thing of course is that men and women make children together.”

Now I know most of y’all don’t speak Swedish, but you have to go watch the scene here and see how the other dinner guests react. My personal fave is the old man who just takes in a deep breath and looks flabbergasted.

Well you know what? We are flabber gasted too. The Eurovision spirit all about embracing people, regardless of their identity. These comments are not cute in our books.

And we ain’t the only ones who are angry. Alexander Bard from BWO, who came third at Melodifestivalen in 2008,  has called Måns out publicly.

“He is spreading homophobia in a very unpleasant way,” he told Aftonbladet. “We will not accept this, this will sting for him. The only way I will accept his apology is if he goes into therapy to get rid of his homophobia. A Swedish artist can not get away with this in 2014.”

Well, Alexander, I hope you’re picking up your phone and signing Carola up for that therapy as well, because Lord knows girl has had her problems with this topic too!

Måns has subsequently released a statement asking for forgiveness. “I want to apologise to all who take offense,” he said. “I believe and hope that the vast majority know that I respect differences and all forms of love.”

Yes, you did enjoy getting tons of PR and attention when you led the QX Gaygala 2014, Sweden’s largest LGBT event of the year. Oh, and you liked it when you were named hottest guy in Sweden in QX Magazine in 2007!

Måns, you need to pick your side. Don’t eat meatballs at the QX Gala and then say it ain’t natural for a man to want to do the same.
