Romania’s 2012 Eurovision contestants Mandinga have released a new video today.“Hello” is a collaboration with popular dance duo Fly Project and sounds like a perfect (read: generic) summer hit. The video features Mandinga’s members – including Eurovision’s Next Top Model 2012 Elena Ionescu – in a military base, playing army alongside several provocatively (under)dressed female soldiers who keep grinding against guns. We know it’s all in good fun and supposed to be sexy, but we’re not exactly digging the glamorisation of gun ownership.

Mandinga’s trademark Latino jazz sound is infused with Russian military choir influences, which may be the song’s only redeeming quality. Elena sings in Spanish and English, as she did on “Zaleilah”, and the guys from Fly Project repeat some of the English text. The dumb lyrics (“I misss you so/I gotta say hello”), the unsophisticated melody and the simple beats can only mean one thing: this will be overplayed on Romanian radios this summer.

So, all in all, a song with almost no substance and definitely none of the “Zaleilah” appeal. What a disappointment!

Rating: 1.5/5

But maybe y’all dig it more than we do?

I really liked their entry in 2012, but this… I think I can’t call this music.
