San Marino, Valentina Monetta, 2

For the third year in a row fan favourite Valentina Monetta will represent the tiny state of San Marino at Eurovision. We know you love her tenacity, you love her drive, and you love her committment. But do you love her Eurovision song “Maybe”?

She sings this well, but I don’t think it lives up to last year’s effort. It saddens me to see that she doesn’t seem to be doing well with the OGAE or in our fan polls either. Then there’s the competition. When she sings in the first semi-final, she’ll be squaring off with four of the big six favourites: Armenia, Sweden, Hungary and Azerbaijan. Fortunately the remaining six spots are much less certain.

I’m keeping the faith. Valentina sings it like she means it, and her passion turns “Maybe” into a memorable song at the end of the day. Although the protagonist of her love song is singing to an unnamed paramour, it feels as if Valentina is singing to all of her fans. Our love gives her the strength to move forward: “And maybe/ The courage that I’m finding now/ Remembering and sensing how/ We fell in love”

Will Valentina finally get San Marino the qualification it deserves, or will she come 11th again? Maybe? Let us know what you’re thinking below.

Maybe Lyrics – Valentina Monetta

Maybe there’s a pearl in the shell
Maybe there’s a story to tell
Maybe we can not live in peace cos we’re under a spell

Maybe there’s a light from above
Maybe there’s a flight of a dove
When it’s time
To open the heart of love

Maybe we can try
Maybe you and I
Are finding pain to overcome

Maybe then one day
Every soul heals and will find a way

And maybe
We really are the dream of God
And we woke up in flesh and blood
With our emotion transformed into gold

Or maybe
In certain solid ways I feel
I know there’s nothing stronger and more real
Than falling in love

Maybe you and I
Are tear drops from the sky
That fill the sea eternally

Maybe we can try
To challenge the fear of the endless night

And maybe
We really are the dream of God
And we woke up in flesh and blood
to find our bodies transformed into gold

Or maybe
In certain solid ways I feel
I know there’s nothing stronger and more real
Than falling in love

Maybe it’s a journey in the darkest night
Maybe we can make it to the morning light
Maybe this is it this is real and I feel this is right
Finally right

And maybe
The courage that I’m finding now
Remembering and sensing how
We fell in love

i HOPE she will qualify.. but i dont think she will sadly. the song is not good enough and not as good as her latest two entries. I would be happy if she is called in the top10 of the semi 🙂

It will all depend on her performance , she is not a sure qualifier so I hope that they will invest in a romantic solid performance. Last years Ikea lamp was nice but they really need to up their game if we want to see her in the Grand Final. Good luck Valentina

She has no chance with that song. There is no maybe.

I’m almost 100% sure she won’t qualify. The song is a disaster and Valentina doesn’t speak English very well. She should take a couple years break and come back around 2019 so she’ll have some time to prepare rather than having to force a song.

It will be an uphill struggle for Valentina. Luckily there are some pretty bad entries in the semi which I doubt will qualify; Iceland, Latvia and Moldova, the Netherlands may also go out. If she qualifies, it will be in 10th place. There is a big saving grace for them though. Quite a few countries in that semi have thrown quite a few points San Marino’s way. Albania, Armenia and Azerbaijan have frequently given them quite a few points, as well as Montenegro occasionally. France and Spain also gave them quite a few points last year. It may not be… Read more »

I love Valentina for how we saw her “grow” as an artist, from the joke she was in 2012 to the respected performer among the fans she is now. I sure hope she qualifies this time, not because “poor her, she deserves it” but because I do think her song is good. However something tells me she won’t, there are a few reasons against her. As mentioned in the article, a lot of the favourites are in the first semi, I’m not sure if casual eurovision viewers who will listen to her song for the first time during the semi… Read more »

However “old-fashioned” the song may sound, and however conservative lyricism has been put into it, I actually begin to understand the whole package. Whether in Italian or in English, the words are more poetical than most, and I personally must back them (writer, composer, producer, performer) on this.
Let’s just see what the broader audience and the jury have to say about this. To me, the ESC-evolution she’s been going through is paying off. And she seems just lovely and surely talented.
Best of luck!

I really hope she can make it! It’s my #1 this year, I find the song incredible. I believe that the juries can push her to go through, since it’s a jury friendly song. I’ll be cheering for her if she makes it through. I sincerely hope that rubbish songs like Estonia, Russia or Ukraine don’t make it through over to San Marino. Go Valentina and with an outstanding performance that you can deliver you can transform a ”maybe” to a ”sure”.

Hm, nice song, but I doubt she will qualify due to the tough semi she is in.

I like the song and I am confident that she can deliver the lyrics with requisite feeling. It makes my top ten for the semi at least. But there is a definite lack of appreciation out there. Most telling is that fan polls, which you’d expect to have some net bias in her favour, are not rallying behind the song enough to matter.

I have her barely qualifying based on being the most conventional and jury-friendly of the even-chance club plus some nonsensical guesswork.

She won’t. xD Only Eurovisionfans that like her will vote for her, and most of them say “I don’t like the song, but I’ll vote Valentina because she deserves it!” Well, do you really think not-ESC fans will vote for her because she deserved it? What about countries who did YEARS to reach the final anyway, despite their good song – the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Andorra, Monaco, Portugal, etc. The most ESCfans say the same. “It’s a bit boring, etc.”. Why, for Cézar’s sake, would non-ESC fans vote for it? :p I don’t think it will be her lucky year. Don’t… Read more »

It should have been sung in Italian. The message in English is less important to me than the natural flow of the song and I find that Italian serves it more authentically than English. Besides, after the past 2 songs were sung in English, why not go for Italian?

Another country that if they had had their 2013 entry in 2014, they would do a lot, lot better! I have this horrible feeling that it will be 0 for 3 for Valentina…

I love Valentina so much and as my fellow Vale cult members will ensure, she will qualify for her first Grand Final. We all want her too. Unfortunately I live in the UK and cannot vote in the first Semi-Final.
