Lys Assia, the very first winner in the Eurovision Song Contest, remains an important symbol of the festival. Since taking first place with “Refrain” way back in 1956, she’s been a constant presence. We love her attitude. We love her fire! And we love hearing her opinions.

Lys has now published Lys’ list, which ranks her Top 20 favourite songs for Eurovision 2014. It’s clear that this lady loves ballads and mellow tracks as she gave Belgium first place, and ranked Norway, Austria, Sweden, San Marino, Montenegro and the Netherlands in her Top 10. What do you think of her picks?

Lys Assia’s Top 20

1. Belgium

I don’t understand why you all are being rude to a 90 year old woman about her taste… Would you really go to a woman, hear her taste of the year and tell her that her taste sucks? She is 90! Ofc she likes these kind of entries you hate and hate the kind of entries you like. Latvia, cuz it’s a cute song. Iceland, cuz of the message, and Malta & Netherlands, cuz they’re calm songs. Can’t stand how alot of comments here have no respect for elderly peoples tastes…

Her list, her taste is rather something wide, as she likes different types of songs, mixed ballads and uptempos, but how on earth did she manage to like San Marino song? Hmmm!…

She would pick Belgium entry as her top favourite number 1 that is, the entry is called “Mother” perfect for her as she is old

Hmmmmmm…. Albania? Spain? Azerbaijan? Why aren’t they here!?

Also. What are Iceland, Latvia and Russia doing here?
They will not make the final…

I don’t agree with her; nor do I think her top will have an easy route to get to the final.

“Question : was this the same person who didn’t put last years winner (Denmark) in her top 20 last year?”

Based on this the winner could be Spain, Ireland, Romania, Azerbaijan, Greece. Still lots of options, difficult to predict.

What do you guys even mean by ‘she has bad taste’? the woman is 90 years old for christ sake… what did you expect? it was quite obvious that Belgium would be on top 😉 I for one like the belgian song, and so will the judges this year. As for me i hope Armenia or Hungary wins… And for those of you who wondered why Azerbaijan isnt in her list? It’s a boring song 🙂 its as simple as that… On top of that, it’s the 5th time in a row Azerbaijan sends a balad… I say bring back… Read more »

I would have shit a brick had she put Poland in her Top 5. Lys Assia and twerking will never be used in the same sentence, well aside from this one or something along the lines of “Lys Assia doesn’t like twerking.”

Finding some similarities with Lys Assia’s list. Not only me, but the whole Eurovision community loves Lys Assia! Still remember her fantastic song with NewJack ”All in your head”. That one should have represented Switzerland! Go Lys! You can be 90 years old and still go to eurovision, cause a person’s spirit doesn’t have an age!

She only ranked San Marino in the top 10 cause Ralph Siegel composed it.. 😀

I think it’s slightly inappropriate for her to comment on favorites given her ongoing presence; it would be far better for her to remain neutral if only to avoid the ‘old lady likes slow music’ label.

Probably first 4-5 are her choices. The rest are just fill in the blanks. But it is the reporters fault not hers.

Old woman has in your top10 in majority calm songs exactly. It’s not surprising. I cannot imagine even that she can give for example my country Poland as leader ;D Belgium has so usual song and no chance for victory. Probably UK will be the first and I wish Molly gold in the grand final.

I love Lys. She is awsome! I think it’s cool that she is not going with the flow and chose the most popular songs.
Denmark in top 3 – yeah 😉

Well, it’s clear she has an eye for quality. The common female singer with a dramatic uptempo cliche Eurovision song does not fool her. Norway, Austria, Sweden, UK, Netherlands, Montenegro and Armenia are in my top 10 too.. OK well, top 15 at least.
