Over the summer, when it emerged that Waylon would walk away from The Common Linnets and his Eurovision partner Ilse DeLange, plenty of us started counting: Surely he only had a few more seconds left in his 15 minutes. Writing on his Facebook page, Waylon explained that he wanted time to focus on his own music. Being part of a duo is great, but it was time to put himself first, especially since Eurovision forced him to delay his album release. Looks like the split has done him some good. Waylon’s new single “Love Drunk” proves that he is even more intoxicating on his own, and that the good music—and the chart-toppers—will keep on flowing.

“Love Drunk”, the first single from his forthcoming album “Heaven After Midnight”, builds on the bluegrass vibe of The Common Linnets’ debut album, which peaked at #5 on the global charts after Eurovision. But this is country-blues with an emphasis on the blues. Contemplative verses sound spartan initally, but build with hand-clappin’ and banjo-strummin, all leading to a killer chorus anchored in Waylon’s husky voice.

That voice carries the pain of a breakup, which has left him questioning where he is and where he’s headed. He’s not afraid to show a little vulnerability—”baby this old cowboy’s lost his way”—and he asks leading questions that suggest he’s looking for an excuse to save his splintered relationship—”You think I should call her up and save this?” He infuses all that heavy matter with clever word play and even a dose of humour: “Maybe the wine’s got me weeping like a woman/ Maybe the whiskey’s got me weeping in my wine.”

Either way, “Love Drunk” is a sobering reminder of Waylon’s immense talent. Fans weeping over the end of The Common Linnets should take Waylon’s latest lyrics to heart: “Say here we go, Oh heart relax/ Don’t you know, we never look back.”

Rating: 5/5

Love Drunk lyrics — Waylon

Tell me we’re running to
’cause I don’t really have a clue these days

Tell me we’re running to
’cause baby this old cowboy’s lost his way

Singing loo-oo-ooo-oo
What’s that? You think I should call her up and save this?
Can I save this?

Singing loo-oo-ooo-oo
’cause you’re damn tired of my blood or misbehavin’

Mmmm hmm

Maybe the wine’s got me weeping like a woman
Maybe the whiskey’s got me weeping in my wine
Don’t no need no water I’m on good with double vision
Everything’s pretty at closing time

Baby I’m a love drunk
Baby I’m a love drunk
Baby I’m a love drunk
Baby I’m a love drunk

Drop the tears into the ocean deep
I told her when I’m found I’ll be home
I’m dropping tears into the ocean deep
Can feed ’em like the fishes down below

Singing loo-oo-ooo-oo
What’s that? You think I should call her up and save this?
Can I save this?

Singing loo-oo-ooo-oo
’cause you’re damn tired of my blood or misbehavin’

Maybe the wine’s got me weeping like a woman
Maybe the whiskey’s got me weeping in my wine
I don’t no need no water I’m on good with double vision
Everything’s pretty at closing time

Baby I’m a love drunk
Baby I’m a love drunk
Baby I’m a love drunk
Baby I’m a love drunk

Yeaaaah

Say here we go love heart attack
Take it in, don’t ever look back

Say here we go oh heart relax
Don’t you know, we never look back

Say here we go love heart attack
Take it in, don’t ever look back

Say here we go, oh heart relax
I don’t know..

Maybe the wine’s got me weeping like a woman
Maybe the whiskey’s got me weeping in my wine
I don’t no need no water I’m on good with double vision
Everything’s pretty at closing time

Baby I’m a love drunk
Baby I’m a love drunk
Baby I’m a love drunk
Baby I’m a love drunk

I think it’s great that he did leaved the Common Linnets. After the Storm is a great song when Ilse and Waylon are singing this song.
I have respect that he goes his way, the way he want’s to make music and not of Ilse. Waylon your new album is fucking great. Beter than….that with the CL.

Haha right on! Ilse who?!
Ilse was/is pretending to be a next door innocent girl but she’s a cold hard woman who runs for the money. Waylon is the smart one. Arrogant or not. People get over it, music lovers will hear what waylon’s got..

He and Ilse were great together. Nou he’s moving forward, following his heart, his talent. Living his own life. Whatever happened, It’s non of our business. And for now, when I hear this song I’m very happy with his descision. Thank you Waylon.

“Singing loo-oo-ooo-oo” > Emmelie de Forest, Rainmaker.

But despite of this little similarity this new song of Waylon is truly great!

There’s something about the “Singing loo-oo-ooo-oo” part that sounds kind of familiar, but he’s a really talented guy and I’m sure we’ll enjoy the album.

This is truly a great singer and a great musician. Understandable that he wanted to focus on his solo career and album. He put everything on hold long enough working on the TCL project.
And for what it’s worth, from what I’ve seen and heard, he comes across as quite a nice, even modest guy. Especially given the enormous talent he possesses.

I like Waylon as a solo artist a lot. With this album he steps out of the shade of Ilse. He deserves his own stage! If you think he is full of himself, try Enrique Iglesias or Robbie Williams. I don’t mind, it’s about music you know?

He´s a great artist but he is really full of himself, which is a shame. His personality doesn´t fit to Ilse´s (I mean, come on, Ilse is hyperactive :P)

I only think that it´s stupid that he leaved the Common Linnets. xDD
