The joker is back, y’all, but he seems to be in a more serious mood this time. Anri Jokhadze, who earned Georgia its first non-qualification back in Baku, has released a single called “I Love Ukraine”. This puts him on the ever-expanding list of Eurovision artists-turned-activists involved with the conflict in Ukraine. Listen below.

Given the style that Anri has showed us before, you would expect a funny song, or at the very least, a parody of “I Love Belarus“, the overpatriotic rock song we heard at Eurovision 2011. Get those expectations out of your heads, people! Instead, the Russian-language ballad touches your heart. The video, showing the plight of the Ukrainians over the past few months, almost makes you weep.

Anri’s support for Ukraine is not surprising. After all, in 2008 Russia invaded and annexed South Ossetia from Georgia. This escalated into a full-scale war between Russia and Georgia, which the former won (this, by the way, was the inspiration for the disqualified Georgian entry of 2009, “We Don’t Wanna Put In”). As a Georgian, Anri understands the situation the Ukrainians face. “I Love Ukraine” conveys his hopes that the war ends differently this time.

@ FIN-Timbardur62, “After all, in 2008 Russia invaded and !!!annexed South Ossetia from Georgia!!!”. Russia didn’t annexed South Ossetia…
Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru recognized the independence of South Ossetia too.

@ Archeops: You sure have a lession to learn, brainwashed little thing. You may have right with the fact that Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia. But the rest of the world didn’t. With the help of Russian troops the South-Ossetian separatists made the Georgian families to escape from their homes.
More about the Russo-Georgian war (although I think you’ll never want to read it):

I respect Anri’s support for Ukraine. Well done. Thanks.

So many lies. Russia never invaded and annexed South Osetia. Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia.
