It may be August, but the internet is freezing over faster than Arendelle on one of Queen Elsa’s bad days. Of course we’re talking about the “The Ice Bucket Challenge”. Started by the American ALS Association in July to raise awareness of the degenerative and incurable ALS or motor neurone disease, the campaign has completely snowballed over the last week, as more and more people get involved.

For those of you who have been living under a rock, on a desert island, in a far and distant galaxy, the challenge involves participants recording themselves pour large quantities of water and ice over their heads, posting the clip online, and then nominating others to complete the challenge within 24 hours, while making a charitable donation.

So far highlights have included Ronaldo in his pants (yum), James Franco with no pants (surprisingly eew), and a papal nomination by Shakira (amen!). Never ones to shy away from a bit of friendly competition, Eurovision stars have also gotten in on the action. Here are some of the best so far.

Ruth Lorenzo (Spain 2014)

Kalomira (Greece 2008)

Blue (United Kingdom 2011)

Marco Mengoni (Italy 2013)

Lukas Plöchl of the Trackshittaz (Austria 2012)

Phillip Kirkorov (Russia 1995)

Conchita Wurst (Austria 2014)

And then there was Conchita, who, being the diva that she is, decided to do things a little differently…

OMG! Conchita’s way to avoid the challenge is really smart. Not only, she said that she is going to donate twice (which I hope will be true) but also, she is driving the attention on the challenge, and its real goal, which is collect money.
Ruth seems to be the bravest one even though she’s doing it during a hot sunny afternoon.

I would be surprised if Conchita actually dumped water over her head. That wig is too fabulous to ruin.

As somebody who will only tolerate water when it is scalding, I get chills watching these videos. Yet, I wish that people would donate and do the ice bucket thing as well. I’d be curious to see if any other disease-oriented organizations do something similar, like HIV awareness and a mosh pit?

But agree with Thiefo too! Seeing a drenched Conchita would have made my day too!

Technically speaking, it’s donate $100 or pour the water over your head. So technically speaking, Conchita is playing by the rules. Let’s hope the others are making donations as well. BTW Padraig, one of the biggest criticisms with the Ice Bucket Challenge here in the states in that most of these videos or references to these videos about ALS ironically fail to provide any actual information about ALS (rather they are accused of being examples of self-serving videos to draw attention more to the individual than the cause). So kudos for providing links and information about ALS! You’re the rare… Read more »

OMG Ruth 😀 her reaction face is priceless!
I both love and dislike Conchita this time, I think is great that she decided to donate twice, at the end of the day that’s what is important (and actually is what this challenge is all about)… but pouring the water over yourself is part of the challenge! C’mon! That wasn’t fun 😛
