In the run-up to each heat of Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK), Finland’s selection for Eurovision 2015, the Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — will rate the songs from that heat. First up is Hans on the Bass“Loveshine”. Did our love shine for this three-piece band? Read on to find out…

“Loveshine” reviews — Hans on the Bass

Deban: There is a market for songs like this in general. Some of these songs have crept into the Eurovision Song Contest. Dr Bezzina’s “Tomorrow” is a recent example of one that performed well. “Loveshine” is in that vein. Easy, breezy, light and beautiful. Hans On The Bass are a formidable trio that give off a quirky busker vibe. Instinctively, you wanna throw your coins (or votes) their way.

Score: 6/10

Josh: “Loveshine” is a really cute song. It reminds me a lot of “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. It’s relaxing and it makes me happy. The lead singer has a pretty voice and the band works cohesively and the whole product is really pleasant.

Score: 7/10

William: Yes it’s sweet and atmospheric and might sound good as the backing track of a teen movie, after some guy has dumped the nerdy-but-hot-without-her-glasses chick. But I would not pay to download this, nor would I waste my money on a televote.

Score: 4/10

Ramadan: It’s a sweet song that reminds me a lot of Malta 2013, but this is totally better. Though I do find this way too laidback. The lead vocalist fits in well with the song and overall it’s nice. There’s something missing in the song, though.

Score: 5.5/10

Robyn: This is the kind of sweet, dinky song that I always think of as being used in a TV advertisement for  life insurance. Or maybe for a supermarket chain. It’s nice, but it’s maybe a bit too laidback for Eurovision, not helped by the lead singer looking like she’s about to fall asleep.

Score: 4/10

Sami: I actually like this song. It’s a little forgottable, but it’s nice to listen to. And I love the atmosphere. Her voice is also very sweet. There’s not a lot of extra that they could bring to the live performance, which may keep them from the UMK final.

Sopon: This takes weather metaphors to the extreme. Three whole minutes of hearing how the weather is like love. We get it, move on!

Score: 4.5/10

Patrick: It’s a lovely song! It makes me feel like I’m relaxing on a beach in the tropical islands with a cocktail! A pleasent voice and a great song. I want to go on holiday now…

Score: 7/10

Mikhail: When I listen to this song, I imagine myself laying in the hammock wiggling my legs and slipping down a drink. It is so sweet and creates a calm, relaxed atmosphere.

Score: 7/10

The highest and lowest scores have been removed before calculating the final scores to avoid bias. We have removed a high of 8 and a low of 4.

The Wiwi Jury Verdict: 5.9/10

It’s all a big MEH for me but I could listen to it with interest. 4.5

Very nice, warm family song. I added it to my bookmarks. But, unfortunately, may not become a leader because it is a non-profit song.
