Australia will announce its Eurovision 2015 singer on Thursday morning Sydney time. Perhaps timed with the announcement, Armenia has today revealed its own Diva from Down Under! Australian-Armenian opera star Mary-Jean O’Doherty Vasmatzian will take up the Australian spot in Genealogy, Armenia’s Eurovision supergroup.

Mary-Jean’s stunning and crystal clear voice of coloratura soprano filled many famous Opera Houses. It was because of her mother’s Armenian education that Mary-Jean was encouraged to study dance, flute and singing. Being proud of her Armenian roots and origin she was inspired by Armenian composer, singer, musicologist and priest Komitas.
We’ve listened to some of her music and Mary-Jean is on point. She’s got powerful operatic lungs and some major stage presence.
About Genealogy
Earlier in February AMPTV revealed that Genealogy will unite various members of the Armenian Diaspora. Five of the acts will come from abroad — and more specifically Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe and North America — while a sixth will represent the Motherland Armenia. This is represented visually through a forget-me-not flower, which marks the centenary of the Armenian Genocide. Its five petals represent five of members of the Armenian Diaspora, while the centre represents the artist in Armenia.
The following map teased the artists’ current location. We now know that Essai represents France, Tamar Kaprelian represents the United States, Vahe Tilbian represnts Ethiopia, and Stephanie Topalian represents Japan.

What a gutsy decision! I won’t be surprised if she raps in the middle of the song. After all who says she only sings opera? Although I think she’s going to be a background kind of singer in this one. Who knows ?
Armenian Beauty ?
I just hope they don’t try to combine a million different styles together, but man, a nice ballad with soprano in the middle would be wonderful. I feel like Armenia is either gonna win this year or not even crack the top 10. It could go either way.
Like Duff and Otna, I fear this might end up being a real mess… or be incredibly good, it can go either way, we’ll see! But so far, it’s a very interesting mix of artists.

I have this unsettling feeling that the song is going to be a complete utter mess with all of these artists from different genres and styles.

I’m here for two reasons:
1) I really hate opera. I must admit, however, that Mary-Jean has a good voice.
