It has been a sparkling night in Lisbon and we now know the first three qualifiers of Festival da Canção 2015 — Portugal’s national seleciton for Eurovision! They lucky (and obvs talented) qualifiers are Leonor AndradeYola Dinis and Gonçalo Tavares.

Suzy had the honor of opening the show (and performing later on), together with the first ever winner of Festival da Canção, António Calvário. We came across some genuine Portuguese songs (Lisboa, Lisboa) and were a bit surprised to hear some up tempo numbers (Filipa Baptista) in this festival that prizes the fado. And we were blown away by the voice of Yola Dinis.

Personally I think that Leonor’s song has a lot of potential should it end up being sent to Vienna. I think that when broadcast in higher quality and with a few tweaks the song could perhaps challenge for one of the latter qualification positions in SF2. I think that we should definitely expect RTP to make huge presentation changes between FC and Vienna. Like we saw with Suzy last year the Portuguese managed to put on one of the more cohesive and professional stage shows of 2014’s SF1. I feel if they manage to pull off the same this year… Read more »

Hi everyone. The language is not really the most critical issue for the utter failure of Portugal in the ESC. It’s quality that counts and this has been completely absent since very very long ago. The problem has always been the complete failure by RTP to understand what the ESC is all about. But it’s also the fact that the music community in Portugal has a profound disrespect towards the ESC. In Portugal all things related to the ESC and the FC is basically a big national joke. The only time the ESC or the FC gets some visibility is… Read more »

I thought Yola’s song was beautiful – like something I could hear in a Golden Age musical.

Yes, RTP IS the reason because FC is so boring. RTP just doesn’t care or they are just blind to the fact that FC doesn’t bring anything new and fresh. It all just feels like it’s been made by amateurs. I am pretty certain that if FC was organized by one of the two other big tv stations in Portugal things would be SO much different. RTP lives in the past it seems. As for the songs that went on to the final tonight, the best one is Leonor’s. She does need to work a bit more on her vocals… Read more »

Yet when France sends a French entry, nobody loses their minds. Just as not everyone in Europe speaks French, the same goes with Portugal. There are obviously good songs in FDC this year. I just hope the juries don’t make a stupid decision and pick a bad entry over the better ones. Quero Ser Tua was well received, the only problem is Portugal not having any countries to bloc vote with other than Spain, probably. It’s the same problem with UK except they had more bad songs than Portugal and they don’t need to worry about semi finals because Big… Read more »

There’s nothing wrong with Portugal sending songs in portuguese, but at least they could send GOOD songs in their native language, like idk, Serbia, Spain, France and Italy?

RTP is running Festival da Cancao like they are running RTP–straight to the ground. I don’t even think they understand that what they are doing feels dated and irrelevant. I don’t understand how they can go to ESC every year and listen and see what is presented and not GET that they are nowhere near as modern or relevant. It seems like they go to the same composers every year that give them poor results and poor viewing figures. I really takes complete stupidity or complete unawareness to listen to these songs and feel like they don’t represent anything that… Read more »

Eugene not you again! I don’t see your problem with the Portuguese entries every single year! Why the hell sing in English when ESC is about showcasing different cultures?
