After SBS announced Australia’s Eurovision participation, wiwibloggers Chris, Josh and William got together and discussed some potential artists to represent the land down under at their Eurovision debut in Vienna. Prior to the official announcement on Thursday morning (Wednesday evening European time), we’ve got Australian-Italian Stallion Anthony Callea on our minds. In his hit single “The Prayer” he prays we’ll be his eyes and watch where he goes. Honey, we’re ready to watch you on stage in Vienna!

Update: Anthony has kindly responded to our YouTube video on Twitter, saying it’s NOT him.

We’re sad we won’t see him at ESC, but can’t wait to hear what he does next. Read on to learn more about Anthony…

WHO IS ANTHONY CALLEA?

Unless you were a fan of Australian Idol back in 2004, you may not have heard of Anthony Callea before. Anthony rose to prominence after coming second in the second season of Australian Idol, and his track record was solid, y’all! He never wound up in the bottom two during the entire season of the show, and was the hot favourite to win. After finishing as runner-up, he released his version of ‘The Prayer’ by Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion. It became the fastest-selling single in Australia’s history, and was the second highest selling single for the entire decade (2000-2009).

BUT THAT WAS 11 YEARS AGO?

Anthony has released a couple of singles since the hype of his Australian Idol days died down. Unfortunately they failed to match the huge success of ‘The Prayer’. But Anthony has consistently maintained his music career by focussing largely on live performance — something that Anthony excels at. In 2014 he launched back into the spotlight through his widely successful tour paying homage to George Michael. The CD/DVD of this show reached number one on the ARIA Music DVD charts.

THE RUMOURS?

In a recent television interview with ‘The Daily Edition” on Australia’s Channel 7, he was asked if he was in with a chance to represent Australia, to which he said “there has been talk” and “it’s anyone’s chance at this point in time”. Anthony was also recently followed by the official SBS Eurovision twitter account, and Anthony had recently followed Blink TV, who produce all Eurovision content for Australia. Just a little food for thought there!

But in all seriousness, Anthony Callea admits to being a huge Eurovision fan and will often host parties at his house and cheer for his homeland, Italy. He has a great live vocal and a likeable personality. Anthony will appeal to the gay audience, being gay himself and marrying long-time partner and former Home and Away star Tim Campbell in New Zealand in 2014 (naww). Anthony will also appeal to the older audience with his operatic sound.

Anthony Callea … wonderful singer … one of my favourites male australian vocalists alongside Guy Sebastian … and as gay as anyone can be LOL I am pretty sure many fans will be disappointed that he won’t be at Eurovision even if these same fans have no clue whatsoever of this guy’s repertoire. No Callea and not Campell, Calleas long time boyfriend. The party is ruined for so many LOL
