Broadcaster NDR have sent out a press release revealing the result of last night’s Superfinal. Andreas Kümmert and his entry “Heart of Stone” won last night with a massive 78.7% of the votes, whereas this year’s Wildcard entrant Ann Sophie only got 21.3% with her entry “Black Smoke”.

Andreas Kümmert says NO

As we all know, Andreas picked up the microphone after his win and unexpectedly declined the Eurovision offer due to personal reasons, and decided to hand it over to Ann Sophie. Host Barbara Schöneberger looked shocked — and so did Ann Sophie — as Andreas confirmed his decision.

You can watch it all unfold below accompanied with English subtitles, and our reactions to a controversial night.

Your theories are totally meaningless. Fahrenhaidt and Laing lost in a democratic voting, so shut up.

Oh lord, now we have to listen to that dreadful song from Ann Sophie.. Welcome to another bottom placing Germany. I, myself, will be taking a toilet break during that song.. So boring and unimaginative.

I kid you not, I went from hating Andreas for taking Ann Sophie’s well-deserved win to loving him for giving it away all in 5 seconds.

Fahrenhaidt’s studio version of “Frozen Silence” was absolutely amazing, but their live performance was absolutely horrible. That’s why they didn’t advance to the second round. Just like Madeline Juno from USFD. I feel so bad for Ann Sophie. No matter how she responded to this she would get hate. If you say yes you’ll forever be branded as “the singer no one wanted”, but if she said no she’d just be Andreas 2.0. She really couldn’t win in this situation. She should definitely work the sympathy vote angle.

I’m really from Germany…(shame)…Our national selection is really shit. Yesterday was the weirdest national selection I ever saw…I’m totally sorry for this shit *facepalm* I hope we get the 27th place in the final. We really deserved it!
In 2016 ARD and NDR should give up germany in Eurovision! We won’t withdraw but should go with ZDF and ProSieben cooperation! We did every year well with ProSieben but now we just make shit! Hope ARD und NDR give up Eurovision! They make TV for old german people but not for the modern and young Eurovision!

78% is one hell of a lead, how come Germany has a music scene of such great quality but the Germans themselves have shity taste?

Meme: I think, there is 1% chance, that Ann Sophie would win istead of Laing. They had best song and performance (the second song) and Germans people love to vote for originally music. But Germans voted for Andreas, because they love him, and not for other contestants. Ann Sophie had only regulary German support for newcomer, but nobody liked her songs so much. If there would be duel between Laing and Ann Sophie, Laing would win with 78% like Andreas. I am German, so I know, what our people love. If we have so strange system of voting (two songs… Read more »

Andreas only did the sensible thing and bowed out of the competition in favor of the better song. Well, Black Smoke was my 2nd favorite after Fahrenhaidt so, regardless of the circumstances, good thing it’s going to Vienna.

@ meme Actually you don’t know that because you don’t know how the people who voted for Andreas would have voted if he wasn’t in the running. The whole thing is compromised by the insistence of the broadcaster to include in the line-up a popular talent-show contestant who is obviously unstable. And the insistence of the german public to vote for his pathetic little number. I agree with Euro-sigrun and EF0912. It should have been “Jump the gun” instead of “Black smoke”. Laing would have definitely been a risk worth taking and the fact that Fahreneidt weren’t in the last… Read more »

meme I’m very confused…and obviously not getting something. If you could bear with me.

Let’s say just for the sake of argument, that Alexa F came third with Gluck. So then Gluck and Black Smoke would duel. Then there’s another televoting session (for free probably..should be) and the song that gets more votes wins. Is this not feasible? Why would Ann Sophie automatically win that televoting?

That is just… wow.

Euro-Sigrun: uhm, because Ann Sophie, by getting into TOP2 had already beaten everybody else? Before the superfinal people could vote for EITHER of the remaining 4 artists’ song. THEREFORE, Ann and Andreas have gotten the most. If Andreas had been outed before the superfinal, and, let’s say, Laing would step in, there’s like a 1% of chance they would win instead of Ann. Happened in Iceland, but this isn’t the same.

I totally agree with you Seattlesque! Laing would have been a risk, but one that is well worth taking. Nothing happens if you play it safe all the time.

And I don’t get why there wasn’t/isn’t a new duel between Ann Sophie and the song that placed third in the second haul. Then at least there would be a clear winner…

They won’t make refunds, they aren’t obliged to do so. I need everyone to see this: by voting you accept the German broadcaster’s regulations&rules. And I’m even more than 100% sure they stated that they are NOT RESPONSIBLE for the winner declining, withdrawing, getting sick and not being able to perform at ESC, and so on so on.

It’s unfortunate for Ann Sophie. She’ll now be going into Eurovision knowing that 4/5 of people wanted someone else, so that means starting out from a negative position mentally. It strikes me as unfair of Andreas Kümmert to have participated if he imagined he might turn down Vienna. And what a shame the voters didn’t go with Laing – they would have been fascinating to watch on the big stage…

In my opinion, Jump The Gun was a much better choice and the fact that Fahrenhaidt didn’t even make the top 4 is absolutely appaling

There must be new voting, there were secong songs by another contestants, which did not go through first voting. Everything should be different, and I doubt, that Ann Sophie would win the last duel with any of other singers. She has so average song and she is so average singer. I want to see popular German contestants with strong songs, not next newcomer with bad song for one of last places in Eurovision final. Germany, you can show more for anniversary of Eurovision, not this regional-contest-song.

If this had happened in Russia and Azerbaijan, the Germans had complained to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and sent UN Blue Helmets.

Wow. Although I think we are missing a piece of a story here, the fact the wildcard winner is going to the ESC again. I wonder how the other acts feel about the wildcard taking their spots. Elaiza did it last year (one of my favs) and I didn’t really care for Ann Sophie (didn’t listen to all the songs in Germany this time), but Black Smoke seems to be a good choice too.

Which just goes to prove that no matter how many sophisticated, musically exciting songs you put in the german national final, the public is going to choose the worst every time.

Really I can’t get over the fact that they had Faun, Fahrenheidt, Ann Sophie and Laing and wanted to send him to Vienna instead.

What can i say really about that….Very emotional moments in last night’ Unser Song Show in Deutchland…. Its ok by me if Andreas wanted to give his victory to Ann Sophie 4 his own reasons…Im not here to judge him over this respected decision.. But he might regret it afterwards and it will be too late then.. Anyway.. Smashing winning by miles 4 him over Ann Shophie.. He got the 78+% of the whole votes and Ann Sophie got just the so low 21+%.. I truly think that if she would had competed with her other song *Jump The Gun*… Read more »
