In “Still in Love with You”, Alex Larke — the male half of Electro Velvet — advises his beloved Bianca Nicholas not to get on the wrong train or plane, and not to go out in the pouring rain. If he actually loves her he should really add this suggestion: Don’t get your hopes up that the BBC will send a winning song to Eurovision.

Yes, I’m taking back every mean thing I ever said about Engelbert Humperdinck and Bonnie Tyler. They may have been on the other side of their peak when competing at Eurovision, but at no point could you call them cruise ship material. Or a Mick Jagger cover act, which, you all know, is Alex’s speciality. There’s nothing wrong with that and I’m sure he does it well. But cover acts perform at weddings and dive bars, not the Eurovision Song Contest.

During the BBC presentation show the duo — who are very likeable and have a quiet charm — said that electro-swing is very in right now. Yes, it’s so in that Belarus passed up Muzzart, a stronger version of electro-swing, in its national selection. Guy Freeman previously said that this year’s act was “very different” from last year’s. And he’s right: Molly’s song actually got people excited.

The video for “Still in Love with You” oozes style…but it also oozes cheese. It sticks to its genre, but that genre is, to my ear, monotonous and repetitive, and it’s difficult to distinguish this from the countless other 1920s throwbacks we’ve heard for years (decades?). Perhaps the bureaucrats at the BBC weren’t aware of this. They spend a lot of time in meetings.

What do you think? Is this the worst UK entry in a long time?

“Still in Love with you” — Electro Velvet

Still in Love with you lyrics — Electro Velvet

Well, don’t get on the wrong train
Don’t fly in an old plane
Don’t go out in the pouring rain
You might get wet I’d be upset
You’re bound to get sneezes
Or nasty diseases
Take good care when I’m not there
I’m still in love with you

While I’m on vacation
You’d be a good patient
Take your medication
I worry so each time I go
Try to keep warm, dear
In case there’s a storm, dear
Take good care while I’m not there
I’m still in love with you

Some younger guys with roving eyes
May tantalize you with their lies
You must be wise and realize
Leave well alone till you get home, dear

Won’t see other fellas, don’t wanna make you jealous
No need to fear when you’re not here
I’m still in love with you

Let’s dance, dance
Dance

Don’t walk on the red light
Don’t stay out at midnight
Don’t get in a fist fight
That pretty face can’t be replaced

Won’t be out at night, hon
It wouldn’t be right, hon
No need to fear when you’re not here
I’m still in love with you
(Oh yes?)

Everybody dance
Everybody dance

Skiddy-beep-bop-doo…
Dee-dee-dee

Sounding good, sugar

Skiddy-beep-bop-doo…
Dee-dee-dee
Take care now, honey

Don’t make a fuss, you need to trust me
This is how it always must be
When I stop to think of us
I can assure you I adore you

Because you’re so gorgeous
You need to be cautious
Take good care when I’m not there
I’m still in love with you

You have a fun time
And soak up that sunshine
But don’t drink too much wine
Just one or two will have to do

I know what you’re thinking
So I won’t be drinking
No need to fear when you’re not here
I’m still in love with you

I’m still in love with you
I’m still in love with you

@Dave24574: QED, although Australia saw that writing on the wall and chose wisely, for a well-deserved 5th. Methinks the BBC (or whichever internal selection committee was in charge) should not have dismissed Kitty Brucknell’s “Yearning” outright. After seeing who finished in the top 10, she might have, at the very least, stood a chance of finishing in the top-half of the board. When i first heard this song and saw the video, I knew it didn’t stand a chance of doing any better than Bonnie Tyler or Molly Smitten-Downes. Switzerland and Moldova missed the boat on Kitty as well, as… Read more »

Perhaps D.C. should put his energies into reforming the Eurovision ‘Song’ Contest. This entry deserved much more recognition than the Tribute Band performances. But, then, we in lil ol’ Uk are so out of sync. with our European partners.

If there is no plan to operate the vehicle then drain it of the old fluids sucfh ass oolant
and engine oil. It is powered by a oil system that provides greater efficiency and
hydraulic pressure. Many vehicle purchasers think they’re going to get the hottest deal by negotiating dokwn from the sticker price.

I like it. Obviously it will depend of the live interpretation and they won’t be able to create the same atmosphere as in the video. They might do better than expected now that the Aussies can vote for them.

I love this year’s UK entry. It’s catchy it’s pure fun, it’s the only song I keep listening to over and over again (and yes, I particularly disliked last year’s UK song). And I love the guy’s voice.

Im making this very clear, living in Australia and this being the first time I can vote, I will be voting UK, in respect for the country that brought Scooch to Eurovision. They may have waited 8 years for their vote, but they are getting it now!

I like it a lot, and the more I listen to it, the more I like it. It’s a great summer song, and it makes me dance.

I really hope it stands out from among all the dreary ballads this year, but it’ll need some great staging to really make an impact. Last year’s staging did Molly no favors.

@ESC Grand Prix
We’re in competition. I have been doing alot of work on my own UK national selection called the GBMF. I’ve been working on it since November and I’m planning to send it to Guy Freeman ASAP. I wish you luck, we all want the same thing. Lets hope the petition and the proposals change things.

I think this is our best song for many years – it’s catchy, memorable and fun. I hope we do well, but at least it’s a song I will enjoy listening to the car anyway

I’m actually kinda happy with this song in a weird way, the violin turns it into a real earworm and with the right staging, it could challenge the left hand side of the scoreboard, because it does stand out from all of the female ballads this year.

My only worry is that the juries will really dislike it like Poland’s entry last year and that will seriously impact the final position, but good luck Electro Velvet! 😀

You’ve missed the point colz (or should that be clutz?). 1924 is right in the middle of the swing era, THAT’S THE POINT! Get it?
It’s a catchy song with a brill video and provided they stage it in the same style I’ll be delighted to say “I told you so” when the song does well.

I’ve changed my mind from yesturday. I do like swing music. Instead of being dissapointed and angry as I was last night, I am just going to enjoy the ride, whilst I know we will be in the bottom five again. Laugh or you will cry.

It’s OK and certainly better than anything in the eternally dull Swedish cacophonyfest.
Problem is the Americans so this better than us. Pink Martini, Dr. Buzzard s Original Savannahs Band, ManTran in the mid 70’s .
but it’s OK and a lot better than some of those selected like Moldova or Serbia.

I still don’t know what to think of this.. In a competition full of ballads it could do OK.. It is not going to bother the left hand side of the leaderboard but it shouldn’t come last because it is different.. I just think the whole thing needs reworking to sound a bit more ‘electric swing’ and ‘modern’ whilst keeping the retro theme.. Will.I.Am has released this type of music before and he works for The Voice UK so I can’t see why they wouldn’t get him involved and tweak it.. Not going to happen though! Never mind UK, maybe… Read more »

I think you guys are overreacting. Personally, I think the song is so much fun and really catchy! It’s definitely a breath of fresh air from all the ballads this year. I don’t think it will win but with the right staging, it could surprise a lot of people in Vienna! ????

Is no one else bothered by the misogynistic lyrics? No matter how many times the woman sings that she loves her boyfriend, he insists on dictating what she can and can’t do — don’t drink too much, don’t stay out late — as if he’s in charge of her life. Newsflash: grown women can make their own decisions. Also, the line “Because you’re so gorgeous, you need to be cautious” sounds exactly like something a rape apologist would say.

I am seriously embarrassed this song is going to be representing the UK at this year’s Eurovision. :\

Very sorry for Eurovision and EBU that the 60th anniversity line up is the badies ever! So this song is not better or badier than others. Why did all the countries send so bad
songs? It´s a shame for Eurovision this year!

This is not at all what I’ve been waiting for… Last year I loved Molly, and I’m still shocked she arrived only 17th, but this year I was sure BBC would have sent another good song to follow last year’s hype, despite the bad result, but god, this is funny but I can see them easily in the bottom 5. I love British music, almost all of my favourite singers/bands are from UK, and everytime they send songs like that I really suffer. To be honest, the song is original, but it’s something that most of ESC fans will never… Read more »

UK Well Uk is sending rubbish again.THIS IS JUST PAINFUL. I just don’t get it.Why they aren’t sending a big star like a lot of eastern country’s are doing.Alexandra Burke is a good name, or Sam Bailey or Robbie Williams etc. They have GREAT artists with great taste, good music and good shows.Still they send every years except in 2009 a rubbish song and then they are surprised that they are rock bottom.Well my friends in UK in your country everybody says that we don’t like you and east will never vote for you.It is simply not true.In 2011 Blue was… Read more »

Also I want to add that this year is the year of 60th Anniversary of Eurovision. BBC will host Eurovision Greatest Hits in London and retro-theme will be in honour. BBC knows it. And the creation of the group singing in retro style, a good marketing step this year. But not in the next.

Paul

@Alex I think the reason of drama is not in the song. BBC created Electro Velvet specially for the Eurovision contest, and the British fans (as usually the conservatives) expected to see their favorites singers or groups and they are upset. By the way, very much non-British fans liked the song.

Answering to your question, William, no, it is not the worst song in a long time. Just relax. It is a funny song, however not ambitious. This entry is definately better than the British songs from: 2010, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2003, 2000.

Is this “Downton Abbey” but in a happy twist?

Dunno, this is dreadful.

My support for Andreas Kummert (the German winner, but declined) just went bigger. That masterpiece of song of his is soooooo not in the same league of these so-called songs.

Way to create the lowest expectations! ;)). After reading / watching the bad rep, I actually didn’t mind the song THAT much! I won’t listen to it again until the final, but it hasn’t left any scars on my brain or anything ;)).

On a different note: William Lee Adams, has anyone told you how incredibly cute you are when you are mad?! 😀

I really don’t like this song :/. I’m not just jumping on the bandwagon. I’ve been strong believer that the Beeb can pick good songs, but I have changed sides. Only twice (arguably once) have the bbc got it right. I think national selection should be back on the cards now!

The song feels like IT has no chorus, it feels like though out the whole song they are talking. It’s like music on the backdrop of a insurance company advert. The song never really goes anywhere :/

Hey everyone,

We’ve set up a petition for the UK to create a Melodifestivalen style national selection format for 2016 onwards, to end this embarrassing run of terrible entries. It would be great if as many of you as possible could sign the petition, and follow the project on Twitter @ESCGrandPrix.

Didn’t Freeman say “Ultimately, one song stood out as having both instant impact and real memory staying power.”
That gives us an idea of how the other songs must have sounded
