In what is shaping up to be an annual occurrence, Lys Assia, the first ever winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, has revealed her top 20 picks for 2015. The 91-year old singer says that she is not decreeing who should win this year, but merely wants to share the 20 songs she thinks are the best musical compositions.

Ms Assia, who was crowned “Queen of Eurovision” by host Graham Norton at Eurovision Greatest Hits in London, chose “A Monster Like Me” as her favourite to win in Vienna. We’re happy that her first choice is a very modern and edgy song. Mørland & Debrah Scarlett must be chuffed!

Spain, San Marino, Estonia and the United Kingdom round up Lys’ top five, while her native Switzerland only managed to grab the 17th spot. We are also surprised to see Italy place only 10th in Ms Assia’s top 20. We had expected that the romantic love anthem “Grande Amore” would be number one in her preferences.

Lys Assia queen of Eurovision
Lys was crowned “Queen of Eurovision” in London on 31 March

As last year, most of Lys’ list is made up of ballads – although granted, 2015 is not exactly the year of up-tempo songs. Having said that, we are not exactly shocked to see Lys pick the very retro UK number “Still In Love With You” as her fifth choice. Maybe seeing Electro Velvet perform the song live in London helped her with this decision?

Lys Assia’s Top 20 for 2015

1. Norway
2. Spain
3. San Marino
4. Estonia
5. United Kingdom
6. Azerbaijan
7. Georgia
8. Hungary
9. Ireland
10. Italy
11. Poland
12. Czech Republic
13. Australia
14. Slovenia
15. Austria
16. Germany
17. Switzerland
18. France
19. Sweden
20. Belgium

Lys Assia won the very first edition of the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1956, with the French language song “Refrain”. She returned to the contest in 1957 and 1958 and to the national selection in 2011 and 2012. She is expected to be present as a guest of honour at the 60th edition of Eurovision in Vienna.

Did the Queen of Eurovision get it right this year? What do you think of Lys Assia’s top 20 for 2015?

I’m always shocked at how people are so emotional about other peoples’ rankings. It is only her personal choice. I think it is respectable that Lys Assia is still interested in Eurovision, in cotrast to some other former performers. And I don’t understand why her age could mean that she chooses outdated songs. So cynical.

For the record, last year she ranked Belgium’s Axel Hirsoux and his horrible “Mother” song in 1st place. Axel didn’t even qualify and was second to last in his semi-final… I think her top 20 should be taken as what it is: a personal opinion from a random singer, whose name is naturally associated with the history of the contest. Nothing more, nothing less.

lol, i didn’t bother checking the rest of the results after Norway being her number 1, in a certain way, i was already predicting that, i seriously fail to see what is that song bringing that makes most people workship that entry so badly, for me, it’s just another typical and boring deut ballad about love and regret, if this wins ESC, then i guess it’s my goodbye to ESC, at least for some time.

I love lys and I know her musical taste varies much from my own personal choices, I’m very surprised she included Nina sublatti,Guy sebastian, Mans Zermelöw and Maraaya, those sound are totally different to what so probably was exposed during her youth!
I respect the fact she likes Spain and Noway, me too and I have both entries topping my list but in the reverse order 🙂 Also I thank lys because she gave Ann Sophie her interest 🙂

You know your song is outdated when a 91 year-old says she enjoys the song.

Why do they keep rolling her out EVERY YEAR ? ok she won the 1st Eurovision, big deal, she’s a bit of a DIVA, now if it was Celine, ABBA or Johnnie saying what their favourites where, I might take note, but jesus Lys Assia give us a break. I knew she’d be at the 60th Anniversary Concert & she’s there EVERY year at the Eurovision Song Contest, please, please, please, give us all a break 🙁 🙁 A

That’s just her personal top 20 like it could be anyone else’s, we shouldn’t expect more objectivity from her than from a random person online. Surprised to see Georgia so high and France so low.

why no Malta, they got pure class in their act and a very sweet girl too

this woman is clearly nuts, with her san marino or that overrated Norway.

i’m this year backing Georgia and Malta for the final and a top 10 at least.

i really like Malta this year with Amber’s warrior and Nina’s warrior for Georgia are my two favourite songs in all the years i’ve been watching song contest that’s 10 years

Lys Asia is nuts but we love her.. <3 🙂 She has fun though <3 🙂 She is already 91 years old and she is not only the oldest living winner of our Vision but one of the oldest participants in the contest too & one of the oldest fans of EuroVision too! <3 She can reach the 100 years of a whole minion millenium centrury and become like our dear aunt grandma Ella that passed away few months ago unfortunately.. Lys is undeniably a true living legend and a illuminated mind and persona… <3 🙂 Love her or not… Read more »

If Norway gets the staging right it could well be Oslo 2016…..no doubts.

You guys should just respect her personal rankings as well as the personal rankings of everybody else, whether they are past Eurovision winners, the bookies or a famous blogger. They may be able to influence the votes, but they will only be able to do so until the televoting level. There is still the jury votes that usually relies on the bloc voting phenomenon. If that’s not the case, explain how the UK televotes last year have Poland at #1 when both countries are not even geographically close to each other while in jury votes, surprise! Poland’s 12 points came… Read more »

Well i guess that Lys Asia is very eccentric and spoiled…After all yeah she is the Star Queen of EuroVision and all of the major celebs like her are capricious and have their own heavy flaws… I really do not mind her and find her obnoxious…I get her… After all bad publicity has her on fame and the surface of news… Somehow she has to find ways to keep being popular with people still talking about her…Pretty much ALL the celebs Stars do the same…If you don’t provoke and create fuss you disappear from the news headlines and people’ memories..… Read more »

Frankly, this lady is just a pain in the a**. You guys should be lucky that you don’t understand what (and how) she really says in her mothertongue – as a Swiss person I can tell you that she has made herself quite unpopular here for different reasons: She blames a little girl with whom she sang in an other contest for not winning, she shouts at people who think that she might not be the perfect ESC-participiant with her “modern” song (last year) and she does everything in order to get people speaking about her (headlines like “I almost… Read more »

Norway’s song is amazing..! <3 One of the hot favorites of the 2015 Vision! <3 Its just only her personal state of mind and preferences… It doesn't mean anything.. We have respect 4 dear Lys Asia but about her own prism and favorites songs in Vienna's EuroVision its really all in her mind and doesn't represent the actual favorites as the fact that she was the first winner of EuroVision doesn't make her personal music taste superior than ours…With no offense to Lys… So we have to not take her own top20 choices that seriously.. She is just a fan… Read more »

Hey Wiwibloggs, would be interesting to research what happened with the votes of the first ever ESC. It seems that the juries were authorized to vote for any competing song, including the one from their own country. Legend has it that the jury members from Luxembourg were unable to make it to Lugano, so the host jury (Switzerland) was given the right to vote in their place. Since Switzerland could potentially give twice the highest points to their entry (on behalf of Luxembourg and of themselves), it’s quite “surprising” that the Swiss won. Cheers from Switzerland. 😉 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision_Song_Contest_1956#Voting_controversy

I love Lys Assia. Even though I rarely agree with her on most things, it’s always interesting to see her opinions, especially since she had her success during the chanson days. We share 5 of our top 10, which is unusually high 🙂

They were strongly promoted before national final in Norway, but Erlend Bratland was very close to beat them, so I think he was better option for Norway. His entry looks stronger!

Is she being serious? I mean it’s great to see Spain, Estonia, Georgia and Ireland in her Top Ten, but Norway 1st….. *eyeroll* And San Marino 3rd…….. that doesn’t make any sense.

Her choices from 11th-20th are a lot better though, as I’m a big fan of Germany, Czech Republic, Slovenia, France and Belgium.

Can’t believe Australia’s making an appearance on her list lolz….
