This week, Israel celebrated its 67th independence day and Nadav Gudej was part of the party, of course. Nadav toured and performed during the national holiday, but was also on TV with his live performance of “Golden Boy”. After the rehearsals and live performances we’ve seen, we finally get a look at the first television performance of “Golden Boy”.

The stage is quite small and there are no dancers, but the boy really owns the stage. Nadav sings and moves flawlessly and really makes you wanna dance along with him and his fun song. We’re really looking forward to seeing this song on Vienna’s big stage with full power.

Nadav Guedj performs “Golden Boy” live on Israeli television

Another Eurovision-related act on that TV special was the medley performed by the group “Holy Wigs”, a drag show group. They paid tribute to many Israeli Eurovision hits such as “Diva” (1998), “Kan” (1991), “Emor shalom” (1976) , Rita (from Kdam 1986) and other divas.

You can watch it on this link – go to 38:55 (Nadav is at 22:15).

Thanks a lot, again, Maya G. I’m listening to those songs right now, Sarit’s voice is amazing. And there is a song about Tel Aviv! Very nice melody. And yet again a key change. Don’t understand a word, but it sounds great. I can’t understand you’re not a Sarit fanatic. 😉

Well yeah, Latin and Greek I’ve done, so there’s not much missing. 🙂
I’m off to Natanya, then!

@Iberian Yes, by “Mediterranean” I meant that oriental-Hebrew-Middle eastern touch. In Israel it’s called Mediterranean music or oriental music. I’m not a Sarit Hadad fanatic so I only know her big hits, out of them I really like these: (It wouldn’t let me post with several links, so these are endings of the youtube URLs) v=bBCIefOfUKY – When the Heart Cries v=_D9WuX2tURc – In the Tel Aviv Heat v=OJTgoDmIm58 – The One Who Watches Over Me v=0D2yjGvcOCE (a cover to a Lebanese hit from the 70s by The Bendaly Family) Good luck with becoming a “vir trilinguis” – you have… Read more »

Any original song Harit’s you can recommend? Maybe one of those you call Mediterranean? See, I’m Mediterranean myself but I think what you mean with that is the kinda oriental/hebrew touch which is so unique and just fabulous, right?

Well, sooner or later one should learn Hebrew in order to become a real “vir trilinguis”, a wise person who knows Latin, Greek and Hebrew. 😉

No judgement here, we all have our guilty pleasures. 🙂
The puppets are called “Red Band”, Named after their lead singer, Red, who is surprisingly purple. Red has a late night talk show, and on each show he and his musical guest join forces to cover some classic song.
The trouble with Hebrew isn’t learning the Alphabet, it’s the vocabulary and the grammar that are hard to master, but you can get along fine with English.

Ha ha ha ha, I know, Maya, my musical tastes are bizarre. It’s not only that I adore Light a Candle. I think I’m the only person who thought Las Ketchup’s Bloody Mary was a nice way to represent my country. I still like that song. 🙂 And a few years ago I thought Macedonia’s song from Esra and Lorenzo (or what was his name?) should’ve won. See, I admit it, I sometimes love songs everyone else seems to hate… Thanks for the Sarit link, what an amazing voice and she gives that hebrew or oriental touch to the song,… Read more »

Oh, The girl with the glass is Moran Mazor and I think she was great despite the very unflattering dress.
Sarit Hadad is still one of the most popular singers in Israel, and is also a mentor in the local edition of The Voice.

@Iberian Seriously? 😀 I really dislike Ding Dong and Light a Candle, though Sarit Hadad is a great singer and you just can’t not love Dana International. Sarit has some great Mediterranean songs, and that style suits her much better that the cheesy LaC, and Ding Dong was just lazy through and through, a bland song, terrible arrangement, no video art, dull staging, just Dana’s charisma and that’s not enough IMO. I gather from your name that you’re from Spain, am I right? If so, you can’t vote for Nadav in the semi final unless you take a small trip… Read more »

Well, Maya, I have to check in which final we’ll be able to vote. I hope it’s the one with Nadav, no surprise, so I can vote for him as many times as possible. I hope he gets through, but I do believe he’s a winner, you’ll see, he’s got it, there is something magic about him. 😉 Thanks for all the info. He should do some interviews with French and Swiss media, then. I’d love to see him speak in French, basically because I could understand him, I’ve had French in school for 9 years. @Iberian You’re very welcome. Nadav was born in Paris and both of his parents speak Hebrew with a very thick French accent, so he probably grew up in a French speaking home. Many schools in Israel teach French (and/or Arabic), but for Nadav it’s a mother tongue. Us Israeli Eurofans try to lower our expectations this year in light of our four successive failures (though most of them were justified IMO), but there is still a glimmer of hope to see Israel on the scoreboard for the first time since 2010. Just making it to final would be a grand… Read more »

Thanks for the link, Maya G, I couldn’t find the performance anywhere. I do like it, but then again, I would even like it if Nadav just read something out of a book. Now his mum looks nice. Do they speak French together at home? Or how could he keep up with the languag? I guess they don’tt each that at school, right?

Oh dear. I’ll be so upset if Nadav doesn’t make it to the final in Vienna.

@ Maya G, thanks a lot for the translations on the Instagram pic, you’re too kind!

@Iberian The comments on instagram aren’t very interesting. Some wrote they’re “sweethearts”, “handsome” and so on, someone wrote “Such a touching reunion! I LOVE how silly you guys are *heart symbols*”, someones wrote “Who’s cigarettes are these?” and another guy begged for Nadav to follow him on instagram and like his photos.

You can watch Nadav singing “Ne partez pas sans moi” here:

The woman with the sunglasses in the audience is Nadav’s Mother (with Nadav’s sister sitting her lap).
Near the end Harel Skaat says “This song was a horrible choice for him”.

@Maya G: I see, thank you. Well yeah, the chorus would sound less chic if they had it like that. 🙂
If I’m lucky to visit Tel Aviv some day I will try to go and get to those beaches in Netanya. And I’ll search for Nadav to see if he shows me this city anyway. 😉

Talking about Nadav and all that: Could anyone sum up a bit, what people comment in Hebrew underneath this picture?

@Iberian Netanya has some nice beaches and a sizable tourism industry, it’s a popular destination for Jewish French tourists, as is Tel Aviv (BTW during the 90s and early 2000s Netanya suffered many terrorist attacks by Islamic organizations).
Still, Netanya is far from being a metropolis and doesn’t have the lively night life or cultural abundance Tel Aviv possesses. Singing “Let me show you Netanya” would be like singing “Let me show you Augsburg” in Germany or “Let me show you Kokkola” in Finland.

austria12points, thank you very much for your comment. I’m impressed about the Celine Dion cover, unfortunately there seems to be only an audio version on youtube, I’d love to see the tv performance. But at least I could listen to it. Nadav sounds great in French, he’s so talented. I wonder if France will give him the doze points.

@Iberian Nadav speaks french and he also performed Celine’s winning song Ne partez pas sans moi.
The casting show ???? ??? was broatcasted on israels major public tv channel.
Nadav will have to do his military service like every israeli. however, some artists get the allowence to suspend or delay their miliary service. but usually people do it, otherwise the could lose reputation in israel’s society.

@Iberian Netanya is located in the Sharon plain to the shore of the Mediterranean, approx. 30 minutes drive from Tel Aviv. It’s considered to have a low socioeconomic status, and is often associated with delinquency, though the city underwent pretty massive transformations in recent years which improved its status.

@ Hebrew seems really tough difficult language….The grammar & the letters look alien…And the whole pronounciation of the words is kinda tricky..
It sounds pleasant to the ears in the songs of EuroVision but i wouldn’t want to learn this language though..
I think that i would face really hard time with the learning procedure..

Really unfortunate the fact that Israel has not seen the light of the final for 5 years in row now since 2010 & Harel Skaat being the last one that experienced the presense on the final.. Ha ha ha ha! Thank you so much GoldenGirl, that’s so cool, I love that, this is so funny. Thanks for the translation again! Actually, it’s so annoying I can’t understand all those comments in Hebrew on Nadav’s Instagram.
