She may be familiar to UK viewers as co-host of The Great British Bake Off, but Mel Giedroyc now has another co-hosting role under her belt at the BBC. The broadcaster has today confirmed that she will anchor BBC Three’s semi-finals coverage alongside Scott Mills in Vienna. We wonder if she’ll bring some cakes?

As a self-confessed Eurovision fan, she says:

“Words cannot express my excitement to be joining Scott and the BBC Eurovision team in Vienna this year! I have dreamed of this since the age of nine, when my siblings and I would mount our own Eurovision at home, taking the parts of different countries. I would always be allotted Mexico and only at the very end of our competition, would be disqualified on the grounds that I was not part of the European Union. I can’t say that I’m any more geographically savvy than I was then, but I hope to bring some truly trivial Eurovision knowledge with me to Vienna, and certainly a lot of deep love for the Contest!”

Having co-hosted last year’s semi-finals with Laura Whitmore at Copenhagen, Scott Mills added:

“Just when I thought that Eurovision couldn’t get any better, I find out I get to present it with fellow Eurovision fan Mel Giedroyc! Eurovision is always amazing fun but that fun just hit extreme levels now that Mel is involved and I can’t wait to get to Vienna and geek out with her. I also want to give special thanks to Sue [Perkins] (Mel’s Great British Bake Off co-host) for lending Mel to me, I promise to bring her back in one piece. Although maybe with added glitter!”

Mel was also a judge on the UK national selection show Making Your Mind Up in 2007, and starred as one of the presenters of the stage show Eurobeat: Almost Eurovision!

So what do you think?

LucyEAPercy, he may be popular on Radio 1 (for now), but what does he do for the contest ? As Alex notes, he doesn’t even play the UK entry on his show. Why isn’t he playing Belgium or Sweden now ? Both are great contemporary songs which he could help to be hits and raise the profile of the contest in this country. Instead, I get the impression that he thinks the whole thing is a jolly which doesn’t require much effort. Mel Giedroyc is going to show him up with with her more genuine enthusiasm for and knowledge of… Read more »

I just hope Scot would be more passionate about Eurovision and not just take it lightly. All the mentions about glitter and fun and drunk are so cliche and ridiculous. Also, we would much appreciate if he could play the UK entry on Radio 1.

THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER! I hated when the BBC get people in who don’t give a shit, like Ana and Laura had never watched Eurovision before…Mel is ridiculously funny, and if the UK ever get to host again, Mel would be the perfect match-up as a comedy duo with Graham Norton.

Fatima…Scott Mills is ridiculously poplar on Radio 1, what on earth are you talking about?!

Scot, Mel is a true Eurovision fan. You’re just using it as a vehicle to sustain your career once Radio 1 decide you’re not relevant. Just as you did with Strictly.

That thing on the dish looks like a birthday cake… 😉
In 2005 i remember that lady that was the spokeperson of UK that proposed to the 50 years of our EuroVision! <3 🙂
And UK on that 50th Vision had given the 12 douze points to our Winner Helena Paparizou! <3 😀
This year in Vienna as we gonna celebrate the 60 years of our beloved Vision it will be like a BIRTHDAY GAY PARTY! <3 😀

At last the BBC picks a great female presenter with a genuine love of Eurovision, not just another jabbering, squawking airhead ! Maybe next year they’ll finally also pick a decent entry again.

Love her on TGBBO, but Sue Perkins is my favourite of the two. Considering the stuff Sue got on Twitter regarding Top Gear, I doubt she’d be too interested in getting into the limelight.

She’ll be a welcome addition to the UK’s ever-growing female co-host list – did love Ana Matronic and Laura Whitmore as presenters, let’s hope Mel will do a good job like her predecessors.
