Polina Gagarina, the stunning singer who represented Russia at Eurovision 2015 with “A Million Voices”, left the world breathless. She grabbed second place, leaving 38 countries behind her, and achieved the highest number of points Russia has ever received in the contest. Such an incredible result should get the whole country behind her, and for the most part it did. But there was one notable exception. Shortly after the contest Vitaly Milonov, one of the most controversial politicians in Russia, described Polina as a traitor. Please pause and roll your eyes.
Vitaly Milonov on Polina and Conchita Wurst
Milonov isn’t annoyed that Polina came second. Instead his sleepless nights are down to the this Instagram video which shows Polina hugging and kissing Eurovision 2014 winner Conchita Wurst in the green room. Milonov, you’ll remember, is known for his hardline anti-LGBT beliefs. He was the architect of Russia’s now infamous “gay propoganda” law and other homophobic initiatives.
In the Instagram post above, Polina describes how Conchita came to congratulate her and how she was thrilled to hear that from the queen of Europe. After reading some disparaging comments on the post, the Russian star spoke out and asked her followers to be kinder because Conchita is a great performer and highly intelligent.
That’s left Vitaly Milonov outraged. Here’s his full response, which you can read in Russian on Rusvesna.su:
Who gave her the right to represent Russia? She represents only the private media structure, where Christian values are not on the first place. … The results are always falsified, the winner of Eurovision has no relation to talent. … When Russia proclaimed its Christian values and went against the propoganda of sodomy, a bearded pervert in women’s clothes went on to win Eurovision ….
Why did Gagarina, a married woman, kiss another man? What is so precious in hugging a mentally sick pervert? It was on purpose, because this is a condition of the contest to push a country as deep as possible, excuse me, into Euro-sh*t, using crude ways to affect the teenagers.
I criticised Gagarina’s kiss with this pervert, which she was doing with the name of Russia, but she immediately started arguing with us….Gagarina became part of the propoganda and she is a traitor of the Motherland – she betrayed Russia for some carpets, medals or something else … so she could become a propogander of Western sodomic values. …
Milonov speaks for himself
It’s uncomfortable to read such a rude — and dare we say backwards — statement from a politician, who is supposed to demonstrate the “morality” he claims to uphold. The last time we checked foul language and hate-mongering weren’t Christian values.
In any case, we should not judge all Russian people, or even all Russian politicians, by Mr. Milonov’s harsh words. People have started a petition to assess his health. Remember: This is the same man who recently proposed a ban on walking around the city topless (for both, men and women). #insane.
Many people in Russia are tolerant and open-minded, and are willing to fight against discrimination of all kinds. Just look at how Polina handled an LGBT question during the semi final 1 winners’ press conference. We should focus on these kinds of people — the ones who stand up to the hate, and promote love and happiness for everybody. Theirs is the voice of the Russian people I know.
A million voices, but only one Polina. You are our hero and we LOVE you!

What is truly worrying and sickening is that that man has an actual job within the Russian goverment and gets to inflict his views on millions of lives. He is unable to differenciate the church dogma from the State which has the obligation to ensure equal human rights (like freedom in all of its forms) for everyone. A consequence of this story is, I feel, that Russia will find it difficult to get someone of the status of Polina to represent them next year. The booing is going to be louder in Sweden than it was in Austria. The pressure to make a pro-LGBT gesture will be greater.

Furthermore, I’m also very concerned with the religious tone of the homophobia. It’s increasingly similar to rhetoric in the United States, and that is what truly terrifies me. Hopefully this guy will eventually get the help he needs.

I’m personally quite pleased that Conchita sat with Polina, praised her and gave her a hug. She obviously transcended the homophobia, hate and bigotry emanating from Polina’s homeland. Vitaly Milonov’s comments about this are absolutely absurd. First of all, a woman hugging a drag queen does not mean you are a traitor to your country. Some people might perceive it as betraying religion, which is unnecessary considering that religion has become a bit irrelevant over time.
