Better late than never. Elina Born, one half of Estonia’s Eurovision 2015 act, released her debut album while we were in Vienna. The timing was great — but we were so busy we forgot to publish our review. To right that wrong, we’ve had another listen, and we’re pleased to say that Elina’s self-titled studio album is full of catchy tracks to keep you going until the Eurovision 2016 season really revs up. She may have sung “Goodbye to Yesterday” at Eurovision, but the album happily embraces the past with three tracks from her pre-ESC repertoire.

“Miss Calculation” is bound to get stuck in your head. It’s an extremely catchy number that will have you humming along to the chorus for weeks. Elina wonders Am I Miss Calculation? Or Miss Miscalculation? in a track that oozes magnificent rhymes. The addictive pop continues with “Kilimanjaro”, which has been announced as her next single. From Estonia to Tanzania, Elina is chasing a shooting star until the break of day and we love the way she rides!

“Untraceable” is worthy of being made into a single as well. The lyrics leave you feeling empowered! This is me becoming… Untraceable, she tells us, but the song definitely puts her on our radar!

“Enough” and “Mystery” — both previously released as singles — hold their own, making the first half of the album amazing hit after amazing hit. The latter complements “Untraceable” and “Miss Calculation” well. When she’s not wondering if she is Miss Calculation, Elina wonders Do I ever get to feel like a queen in a pack of bees? We are certainly ready to worship her and be part of her colony!

“Crazy For You” and “Fall With Me” are enjoyable to listen to as well, although the album does lose its killer edge in the second half. The slower songs – “Burned By The Sun” and “Weekend Wars” – show off Elina’s impressive vocals but aren’t as powerful as a ballad should be.

Overall, if you enjoyed “Goodbye To Yesterday”, you’re in for more of the same flavour with “Elina Born”. From the addictive fun of “Miss Calculation” to the wicked lyrics of “Untraceable”, there is no shortage of songs to sing along to before Eesti Laul 2016.

Score: 4/5
