The submission period for the German-Swiss broadcaster SRF closed and we selected our favourites – the songs we thought had a good chance of progressing to the Expert Check stage. But there were songs that got our attention for other reasons. They might not be destined for Die Entscheidungsshow, but these Swiss gems deserve a special mention just for being so entertaining.

“That’s What It’s All About” – Maria Christina

“You cannot stop me,” Maria Christina asserts – and we believe her. “That’s What It’s All About” is a bold declaration that Maria Christina is here and she’s determined to enjoy life to her fullest ability. The video is an extravagant production filmed in a vintage aircraft hangar, with a huge cast of dancers. Eurovision’s limit of six performers could never do this song justice, though perhaps Maria Christina could find a way to get the plane on stage.

“5,9% mehr Liebe” by Horst Blue

This is a big ol’ disco track, advocating 5.9% more love for everyone. Why 5.9%? Why not 6%? Or 10% Or even 100% I don’t know, but there is something very catchy about that “Fünf Komma neun Prozent mehr Liebe!” chorus. Get out your spreadsheets and dance!

“Trümmer” – Inge and the TritoneKings

A 94-year-old granny and a metal band? It’s an odd combination but it works. The band deliver a dramatic accompaniment (including piano and brass along with a traditional metal sound) while Inge proves she’s one mean nonagenarian. And age really is no barrier – in 2013 Switzerland sent 95-year-old Emil Ramsauer as part of Takasa.

“Urlaub” – Konrad Shou

Konrab Shou delivers “Urlaub”, his electro ode to vacation fun times. For a non-German speaker, it’s not exactly clear what he’s singing about, but there’s something about itsy bitsy teeny weeny bikinis, and Santa Claus appears in the video, which pretty much covers everything you’d want in a good vacation.

“#SHAKETHATDOWN” by YOUR FAVORITE SH*T

If the smiling poop emoji is your favourite emoji, you’ll love this video. It’s based on emoji characters, led by the smiling – and dancing – poop emoji. He loves to party and his international friends – represented by emoji poop in national colours – join him for some fun. We are expecting that SRF might eventually delete this video.

“Oh Captain My Captain” – Mimis Levandes

Like most of us, Mimis Levandes felt great sadness when he heard the news of the death of comedic legend Robin Williams. But Mimis went a step further, penning this ode to the great entertainer. The lyrics cram in references to almost the entire Robin Williams filmography. And as Mimis sings, “If life is just a song, who can sing it better than me?” Who indeed.

“Holz vor dr Hütta” – Platzhirsch

It doesn’t get more Swiss than this. “Holz vor dr Hütta” is an ode to the pleasures of cozying up in a traditional Swiss chalet, enjoying fondue, beer, kirsch and good times. There’s a mix of traditional Swiss folk music and modern styles, with a bit of rap, metal, rock and roll, and disco. And there’s an accordion. And yodelling. Hey, there’s room in this hut for everyone!

Have any of you noticed that one of the members of Platzhirsch is San Dii from last year’s selection?

i think maria-christina should be in the top candidates. her appearance is authentic and different, wheras other good vocal high performers have got rather mainstreamy songs that easily would get overvoted in stockholm by more original and unique 3 minutes.

Be warned, though: At YouTube, the Germain Sisters’ “Sunshine” has over 21,000 views, and Vasilije (whose song “Zauvijek” might run into eligibility problems) has more than 6,600. As far as I know, no other song has more than 1,000.

I presume the French and Italian broadcasters will choose among those that were not selected by the German broadcaster, yes?

Be that as it may, I am looking at these 6: Crispi and Thessa, the Germein Sisters, Patric and Abdullah, Vincent Gross, Serrano Terrace, and Voxa; with Conny Conrad as a sleeper insurgent. I’ve got 7 others as possible finalists.

Let’s rely on the Italian and French broadcasters for the eventual entrant….

I really like Vasilije’s “Zauvijek”, and I don’t get why people tell ot’s plagiarism, because I shazamed song from few different devices, and it always shows Vasilije Ojdani? – “Zauvijek”. It’s a great song, ballad with a great chorusx and with a good choreography it could win the whole thing! Also, story behind song is difficult. Vasilije lost his first girlfriend in car accident, that is what the whole song says — “and when everyone leaves, I will be just there standing for you, when you are alone, I am there for you…”. Any person can find itself in the… Read more »

@moco: The novelties will be quickly laid to waste. Count on it!

I THOUGHT I heard everything available from SRF; but it turns out I was wrong and I heard maybe 40 or 50 of them (that which was available at YouTube). I’m going through every last one at the SRF site, and after hearing perhaps another 25 that I DIDN’T hear before, my 3 are Crispi (for its uniqueness among those I have heard so far), the Germein Sisters (a real feel-good song) and Vincent Gross (another good song worthy of the ESC stage)..
