The first live auditions for Belarus‘ Evrovidenie 2016 took place yesterday in Minsk. 60 artists sang their entries before a jury, which included past Eurovision entrants Alyona Lanskaya, Dmitry Koldun and TEO. Singing live in front of cameras is never an easy task, and the Evrovidenie performances were no exception. We gathered the good, the bad and the funny of the first auditions.

The good

Band NAVI – “Gyeta zyamlya”

The duo NAVI — that’s Ksenia Fulk and Artem Lukyanenko — brought one of the best songs to the first auditions. Even on the first listen you can’t stop clapping along!

Alexey Gross – “Flame”

Alexey might not be the best singer, but at least his song (especially the studio version) is very good. He could also be one of the contenders to win ENTMM 2016. Alexey finished fifth in 2015 with “Stand As One“.

Anastasiya Malashkevich – “Pray for Love”

Anastasiya — who competed in this year’s final with “Don’t Save My Name” — had one of the strongest voices in the auditions. Hit that high note, girl!

The bad

Natasha Bogdanova – “Hello”

When you don’t know if you should laugh or cry. Natasha is not the next Adele and the song is more like a tragicomedy.

RAY – “(U Wanna) La La La”

Even though Eurovision was once won by song that had more ‘la’s than other words, we have a feeling we are not going to have another any time soon. With bad production, horrendous dance moves and not-so-great singing, we don’t want to see or hear this ever again.

SGBand – “One Family”

The lead singer of SGBand isn’t really the best rapper, nor a great singer. He even seems to forget the lyrics at one point. This is making us feel very awkward.

The funny

NFEA “Spasovka” – Kalya mlyna

Step aside, Buranovskiye Babushki — here comes the Belarusian grannies! Sadly the song they performed is not as catchy as “Party for Everybody” and it is actually just a traditional Belarusian song. They still put smile on our faces, though.

Raskalyonnye utyugi – “One, Two, Three, Five”

This five-pieced group is bringing out an exhausting choreography and extremely catchy song. They are even asking the same thing as all of us — where is four?!

Sweet Brains – “Dance Like Zombies”

Be prepared for the second wave of zombies! Last year they tried to reach Vienna through two countries, Moldova and Belarus, but didn’t qualify for the live shows for either. This time they are back stronger than ever — and with an original song.

BRIZ BAND – “Sing and Dance”

This song has almost everything. It has Alex Larke-like scatting, the always current accordion and synchronized dance moves. We all end up singing and dancing along.

The second auditions will take place on December 1, and will also be streamed live.

Only for information 🙂
Anna Ray – ex-MILKI. She participated in previous selection as one of the vocalists of MILKI band.

“The good” choice seems strange to me. Not impressed with that at all. Anastasia’s voice sounds very annoying, Navi and Gross are boring.

I think if Natasha Bogdanova is in final, she wili be favorite to win, and in Eurovision she wili be in TOP 5 with televote and 26 with juries in all countries.

I kind of wish Belarus wouldn’t do this … First impressions are important, and these home-video-quality presentations aren’t flattering to anyone.

Which makes Anastasiya Malashkevich’s singing all the more impressive.

There’s also a lesson here for anyone who thinks they can evaluate a song or performer based on the studio version – especially when it’s a dance track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KqAmioQ2b0

I think i only really liked Anastasiya Malashkevich. Some truly awful songs in there already. But Belarus tend to usually send something good and im still waiting on Koldun returning! His so far is the best entry they have sent.

Here’s a good song you missed, Kattie – Rainbows. This song is a fan favourite to win and it had a good live performance.

I actually liked the zombie dance!!!! I think it’s something different and a little bit kidds and it’s great because for an unknown reason last 3 years almost every country takes this contest quite serriously!!! Well, my 12 points for zombies so far!!!!!

I’m yet to see Belarus bring a decent entry so I’m not getting my hopes up this time round even with the push for the Belarusian language, which btw is a great idea.

Very happy that the auditions start so early. I would like a song in Belarussian, but since they know how to send a good English song, they can do both.
