In an interview with wiwibloggs shortly before Objetivo Eurovision, Barei said she has been “swimming up river” alone and without a record label. The Say Yay lyrics, she said, were all about her struggles trying to get by — and the courage to stare danger and fear in the face. “Go-getters don’t forsake! They never wallow in their fate.” Indeed, they pick themselves up and know “we only got today to learn from our yesterday.” Barei has done that, moving from obscurity to become one of Spain’s Eurovision favourites. She’s delivering a pop song about perseverance — and one that applies to aspiring singers and all the rest of us too.
