We are getting close to Estonia’s national selection for Eurovision Eesti Laul 2016, which kicks off on February 13. In recent weeks the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — has been listening to and reviewing all of the songs. Next up are I Wear* Experiment with their song “Patience”. Their feet are on fire and they are ready to slay! Were we impatiant about listening to this song? Find out below!

“PATIENCE” REVIEWS
Mikhail: This was one of the first Eesti Laul entries to be released and I still love it! This music takes you away, makes you feel something. It creates a special atmosphere that makes you want to create something! A little bit inspirational, I would say. The only problem with this song is that its lyrics are a bit repetitive, but I can live with that.
Score: 9/10
Robyn: The overall quality at Eesti Laul is very high this year, but that leads to situations like “Patience”. It’s not a bad song, but it just doesn’t stand out against its stronger competitors. But there’s still a lot to be enjoyed with the uplifting emotion of the song.

Deban: The first minute left me spellbound! However, as we hit the chorus, the song became a major letdown. Too shouty at times, and hemmed with an unnecessary drum kit. Towards the end, I’d lost patience. What started out beautifully has turned into a hot mess!

Josh: I absolutely love this song. In fact – I love a lot of the Estonian candidates this year. There’s something about the style of music that’s being put forward in Estonia that reminds me a lot of the electronic-indie scene that has reached its prime in my homeland of Australia in the past couple of years. I don’t know how well this will carry across to a Eurovision stage, but as a standalone track I am a huge fan.

William: Soaring vocals over enticing electronica really drew me in during the first minute. But after hearing this chick shriek that her feet are on fire for three minutes, I’m ready to dunk her in a tub of water. The monotony and lack of vision after the first minute is really unfortunate. This song is a good idea poorly developed.

Patrick: Okay, this started amazing, I must say — I love those voices. Nice rhythm and great bounce in it, but then daaaah… those electric guitars are not my favourite at all. It didn’t ruin the song though. It’s just a bit meh. Anyway, I think it’s still one of the best in the selection and I want to see them doing well!

Kristin: There’s a catchy tune somewhere in there, and I quite like that one. “Patience” is not a winner, though, the build-up is too long and it’s a bit too repetitive. But I like it nonetheless, and it might find a place on my playlists.

Antranig: The lyrics of “Patience” are simultaneously bizarre yet thought-provoking. Sadly it is way too repetitive and I’m quite bored about halfway through the song. I don’t see this as a contender, though it certainly isn’t the worst entry in the field either.

George: This song may not be my favourite, but it’s definitely not bad. It skilfully combines many styles, so the end result is not chaotic. And of course the voice is good enough to support the whole song. The only bad thing is that, after a certain point, it’s repeating over and over and it becomes a bit tiring.

Sinan: Nice song, but I do not think it will be chosen to represent Estonia at the Eurovision 2016 in Stockholm. It seems slightly weaker against the other songs in the national final. But let’s see how it will be performed.

I love the build-up. I love how it’s being broken down and yet builds itself up constantly. It has the catchiness that some of the other “indie” stuff lacks, although I understand why that’s being perceived as repetitiveness. On first listen, I was also put off by the drums, it’s a slightly unconventional rhythm that suits the “Experiment” band name just a little bit too much. One letter – YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. The first half of this song is brilliant, the atmosphere it creates, the singer’s voice, the slow build – it’s all very unique. I don’t even mind the girl persistantly telling me that her feet are on fire. But the drums, WHO THOUGHT THE DRUMS WERE A GOOD ADDITION?! AND ARE THEY DEAF?! It’s giving me military vibes in a song that was taking me to a serene lake (a fire lake i guess?).

I think this is pretty good but as some on the jury pointed out, Eesti Laul is going to be a tough contest this year and I just do not know if this stands out enough. There are other songs with more of a hook.
