Ten acts competed in the first semi-final of Eesti Laul 2016, Estonia’s national selection for Eurovision. They all gave us remarkable performances, but only five could make it through to the final. The lucky quintet were Mick Pedaja with “Seis”,  Laura with “Supersonic”, Kati Laev & Noorkuu with “Kaugel sinust”, Cartoon & Kristel Aaslaid with “Immortality” and Kéa with “Lonely Boy”.

MICK PEDAJA — “SEIS”

LAURA — “SUPERSONIC”

KATI LAEV & NOORKUU — “KAUGEL SINUST”

CARTOON & KRISTEL AASLAID — “IMMORTALITY”

KEA — “LONELY BOY”

Non-Qualifiers

Würffel — “I’m Facing North”
Zebra Island — “How Many Times”
Windy Beach — “Salty Wounds”
Indrek Ventmann — “Hispaania tüdruk”
The Jingles — “Love A Little Bit”

No Zebra Island? Awww~ 🙁
But I’m glad Kati Laev qualified.

BTW, am I the only one thinking that “Kaugel sinust” sounds like Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the wall”?

the phenomena of Cartoon is so weird. I find their music too tepid for my taste. very boring. I really dont get it. dont bash me, different people different tastes. I like something that has a kick and is slightly absurd LOL how funny it is to see everyone praising Seis, the lyrics don´t make any sense. It stands out though it may be too quiet on ESC so people wont even know he already performed I am actually glad Kati Laev got through – at least 2 songs in estonian in the final. even if the song might be… Read more »

Mick Pedaja is the only one who stands out in a good way, Estonia has a diamond on their hands with him and I hope they realise that, my other favourite in this semi, Laura, really disappointed me, she has flop written all over her, if Estonia chooses her is going to be like Tanja and Amazing. Now I want to see what Jüri does

Cartoon & Kristel Aaslaid’s entry is my favorite among the bunch that got qualified – Slovenia has done well with genres that aren’t their usual fare at the Eurovision since 2015 and “Immortality” is one of those songs that isn’t Estonia’s usual fare at the Eurovision but would do well if they do choose to send it.

Well, ok. But, Juri Pootsman will probably win in the end.

I’m happy with the results, surprisings peformances too. Mick was amazing, but I’m afraid he won’t be able to appeal the whole ESC audience. Cartoon? WTF? At the start I thought it was the videoclip and not the live performance, maybe it could make an impact in the audience. And finally, about Laura, I agree with Robyn in the fact that she looks like a school teacher performing in the act at last day of class, but I kinda like the song so I want her to win, thought I don’t see in her a winner attitude.

Würffel was eliminated. How sad! 🙁 They were my favorites in the whole competition. At least, Cartoon and Kristel made it to the final. I just hope Laura doesn’t end up winning.

If all of you guys (people in previous comments) really thought that Würffel, Windy Beach, or even Zebra Island should’ve qualified to the final and would’ve done well in Stockholm, let me tell you, you’re delusional. Foreigners clearly overhyped Würffel too much, at the same time Estonians barely even cared for the song at all. Those songs are nothing more but average, they’re all flat and don’t really go anywhere. I’m personally very pleased with the result of this semi, the only surprise for me was Kati Laev, but I’m happy for them. Many of you are concerned about Cartoon… Read more »

No Wurffel, Zebra Island, and Windy Beach? Well at least Mick Pedaja is going to the final and I’d love to see him win. He’s like the Estonian version of James Blake

@Robyn: I know, right! Mick was certainly the highlight of the night, but I think that this kind of outcome could have been predicted considering his performances of ‘Seis’ before the semi. Of the two stripped back versions that I’ve seen so far, it seems to me that he’s still experimenting with the song, probably trying to figure out what works best. I can only expect that in the next stage of Eesti Laul, Mick takes his performance even further and builds on what success he’s already gained. From what I can tell about his songs so far is that… Read more »

Eesti Laul is maybe my favorite National Final. Many “alternative” and different songs. I really liked the lights and background this year.
Unfortunately, they didn’t chosen well.

The only qualifier that I really enjoy is Mick. Who needs a projection dress when you can project on your face? Great song. My personal winner (Juri) is in the 2nd Semi, but I hope this will do well.

Indrek and Würffel should qualify instead Laura and Kati.

I don’t wanna Cartoon to win, but I’m curious to see how the performance would be in Stockholm.

I’d also like to mention how amazing Jüri’s peformance looks from the quick little snippets we got of next weeks songs. I hope he wins the whole thing.

@MGR: That’s because Juri is in the second semi. This is the first semi.

A lot of hate delivered to the qualifiers… Look, I don’t like many of the other songs, but the thing is is that they delivered on the night and had solid performances. Ultimately, that is the most important aspect of being part of a competition that requires you to sing live. The audience, while not all professionals in the music industry, generally know what good singing is. They are not very forgiving when there are bad live vocals; it’s cruel, but it’s fair.

Guys, don’t freak out about Immortality. We will get a different peformance at the final (better vocals and hologram).

How the hell they will they show Cartoon’s song if it goes to Stockholm? 🙂

Don’t be so hard on Kristel, she said in an interview after the recording that she caught a cold so that affected the vocals in her performance. I personally loved the CGI effects too, favourite of the night.

@mocosuburbian
If Cartoon ends up in Sweden, the character in the video shall be turned into a hologram and Aaslaid will replace it within the last minute of the song.
Eesti Laul simply can’t afford enough funding to implement that tech for a single performance. I’m sure come Eurovision many will make use of the option.

What an absolute waste of me getting up at 5:30AM to watch this and Estonia can’t even send Wurffel through to the final despite being in the top 6 of the jury, I am furious. Windy beach not making it upsets me too but not as much since I knew she probably wouldn’t make it. I’m okay with Kea progressing only because she did well vocally, while Cartoon and Kristel Aaslaid disappointed me a bit with poor vocals and barely any live portion to the performance, although the cgi was nice to watch. I’m still asking myself ‘why’ over Kati… Read more »

Exactly, Kristel shows up in the end of the “performance” and at that point isn’t even singing the main melody any more so there’s no way to verify if she was ever singing to begin with because there can always be as many backing vocals as there could possibly be right? They have a treasure on their hands right now with Mick Pedaja.

If they want to cause a stir and a controversy, Cartoon might deliver that, but it doesn’t make “Immortality” any good at all.

Mick Pedaja’s performance this morning (I’m Australian, it’s the morning for me so shush) sent me all the chills and ticked all the boxes. It was better than what I originally anticipated and now I’d be heartbroken if this doesn’t win. Another notable was Cartoon, their visuals… wow! However, would this be allowed at Stockholm? Most of the performance was not even on the actual stage. Not to mention that Kristel’s vocals were very weak. Maybe she lost her voice recently? I don’t know what to make of it. Most of the other performances were disappointing… It seemed like most… Read more »

Cartoon didn’t show up at all in Immortality, and Aslaid herself was only there in the last twenty seconds… that seems a little off. where’s the line between the music video and the performance?
