Seconds ago, Horsens crowned its winner of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2016 – and that winner is Lighthouse X with “Soldiers of Love”. The show was as dazzling as ever. They gave us a Danish-language musical number from the hosts, acrobats, dancers, and so much glitter.  However, there could only be one winner, and now X will be flying off to Stockholm to compete in the 2nd semi final for a spot Eurovision’s grand final on 14th May.

Three songs were selected to go through to the superfinal by a mixture of 50% televote and 50% jury vote. On the jury were Vicky Leander (choreographer/stage director), Chanée (ESC 2010), John Gordon (songwriter of Lena’s “Sattelite”), Dennis Johannessen (radio host) and Mette Thorning Svendsen (OGAE Denmark).

After the performances, the Danes worked their magic by combining jury and televotes, and the three qualifiers to the superfinal were Simone with “Heart Shaped Hole”, Lighthouse X with “Soldiers of Love” and Anja Nissen with “Never Alone”.

Denmark Super Final Results

After Anti Social Media’s controversial win last year, the winner of the superfinal was determined by televote alone. After a second listen of the three songs, the Danish public voted for their favourite – with Lighthouse X ending victorious. And the boys we’re clearly very excited.

What do you think? Did the right song win in Denmark?

I didn’t think they were the best choice, but I ended up voting for them because of their intentions with the song, which is about peace in the world in response to terrorism and armed conflicts – not about love. They were so genuine and natural about wanting to reach people, and this held against Simone’s much better song but cheesy performance and self-centredness made me sacrifice a good song for a song with a deeper message. I found Anja’s song too blend.

Don’t count them out of the finals yet. I think they got a lot of young votes from both boys and girls. Two of them are quite famous actors, one from a chick flick series and the last guy’s husband is a famous dancer in the Danish version of strictly come dancing. So they might get a lot of young votes in the semi finals too.

@moco (2nd post in this thread): You beat me to it! Nevertheless, here is how I saw yesterday’s competition: 9.288 David Jay Being the first to sing, his score was a benchmark for all others to top. I didn’t think anyone, including Simone, did enough to top him in this round. 9.275 Simone Excellent song, but the stage performance reminded me of something I’ve seen before, and not once. 9.263 Kristel Lisberg After listening to her song, I thought she might pull the upset in this contest. 9.188 Bracelet If there were a chance for someone to get knocked out… Read more »

Why did Simone drop the song in every chorus. She could’ve won the whole thing

Sounds like a song that got left off of One Direction’s first album to be honest.
That just might net them some points.

I’m not too happy about this result, but if this means we at least won’t be having Simone or Anja represent us, this makes me happy. Simone’s song was decent, albeit generic, but she made me want to throw up whenever she spoke. She was just so annoying and unnatural. Anja’s entry was the poor man’s Emmelie de Forest, and another generic one and if the woman can’t even speak proper Danish, then she shouldn’t represent Denmark. So Lighthouse X was the only reasonable choice from those 3 although I think it’ll struggle to make the final. It’s good enough… Read more »

Simone would have been a better choice, even though Lighthouse X had more confident vocals and her show was way over the top. Still there was nothing in Denmark’s line up this year to ight up the scoreboard in May.

I actually thought Anja’s song was more bland and boring than this one… so uninspired, it’s almost a crime. Heart Shaped Hole was the best song on the night IMHO, although it’s of course a straight Sia ripoff. But the staging was a bit cringeworthy, maybe the Danes thought so too.

Bad choice Denmark.

I’m still waiting for a good song this year. I only like, without passion, Ireland and Spain.

I did not like any of the 10 songs in the final to be honest. For me, it was about choosing the lesser of evils. My pick would have been blue horizon, at least it was original. Then I heard the 3 songs for the superfinal, and I found myself rooting for simone, who had the most radio friendly, well produced song of the night. But then I saw oikotimes.com reporting Lighthouse being the audience favorite, and then I knew, we are up for a big shock. I will be really shocked this one makes it to the final. It… Read more »

This is not horrible, it represents what it is supposed to be very well. It is a boy band song, it is not overly produced and “mystical” a.k.a Aminata-esque which everyone tries to be this year also It has a simplicity and It is quite catchy. No matter how good the song is I would never vote for a title “Heart Shaped Hole” and Anja’s song is “Only Tear Drops” pt.2. I don’t even know why it came so far, the similarity is incredible, the beats in the chorus are the same. So What I am trying to say is… Read more »

Yeah Jake it is a case of not thinking anyone else would win…there were 2 good songs out of 10, Anja and Muri and Mario…there was one great song with potential to be a dark horse in Stockholm, Simone (the bridesmaid)

Lighthouse X have a weak bland song.. they will be lucky to get out of the semi’s.

Jake

this outrage is hysterical to me…I think fans had convinced themselves that it could only be the girl that was always the DMGP bridesmaid or the hot thing out of Australia with a carbon-copy of the past Danish winner (written and previously performed by said winner), that they could not imagine anyone else winning so poor Lighthouse X are being subject to so much hate unnecessarily…I liked the song at first listen because it had a great hook and that really was showcased on the night when the entire audience started standing up and clapping and singing along Anti-Social Media… Read more »

A really good song! Good luck Denmark in Stockholm this year. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this song will qualifield to the finals. It’s too bad that Sweden (my country) only are able to vote in the first semi-final, so i can’t do anything to affect the resultat.

Come on! Which of the songs that are already selected are better than Soldiers Of Love? Only one – Sunlight, in my opinion.

And what about Muri&Mario? They were better than Simone or Anja imo.

This song is bland and boring. It des not stand out. It only won because of Johannes (the middle guy) He is quite famous in Denmark. We won’t qualify for the final this year again.

The Danes just love defying the odds, don’t they…the song is average good…but, the final in Stockholm?…I have my doubts…Simone was clearly the best, even if she wasn’t my fave. This song ranks mid-table for me. Good luck, Denmark, you’ll need it! 😀

I’m still in shock! Its like having a choice of a million euro (Simone) or one thousand euro (Anja) or a bag of crap (Lighthouse X) and deciding to walk away with the bag of crap. #incomprehensible

What the actual fu….. I’m not going to swear.

But Denmark clearly doesn’t want to win partly due to the big credit card debt that they run up for the 2014 contest.

And due to the fact if they win the contestants and fans will have to give boarder control all their jewelry and valuables. XD

I seriously believe that both Anja and Simone had great songs even though their stagings weren’t the best we could imagine. Anyway, Denmark pls, a kind-of-schlager song could work in a year with a lot of Sia/Guetta songs, as far as we’ve seen this year is, but I found it quite plain… Maybe with a revamp could work, who knows, but right now I find it difficult to pass the semifinal.

The powerful Danish entries seems to be long gone. Now it seems they don’t want to win any-more, or even get in top 5..
It will do better than last year, but that’s that. The song is not bad, it’s quite decent but to generic and forgetful.
Come on baby brother, you can do better!

Although the line-up wasn’t that strong in the first place and both Simone and Anja didn’t bring their A game tonight, they still would’ve been better choices.
What happened? It’s like 2015 all over again. And I didn’t like Basim the year before either… I want the Denmark we used to love back.

Let’s be honest. The top three all had terrible performances. What it should have come down too is the song, for which Heart Shaped Hole clearly should have won.
So let’s be soldiers of love? Let’s not Denmark, let’s not :/

This was simply anti-favorites voting. Danes are international altruists and that’s why they want other countries (largely poorer than Denmark) to win in Stockholm. They also think if Romania or Hungary will win in Stockholm, people from these countries will be bigger patriots and they will stay in their countries. Denmark does not want to be popular state, because they don’t want immigrants!

I believe that Lighthouse X will do a lot better than Anti Social Media did last year in Vienna. The song is enjoyable enough and has got a catchy tune to it, I personally placed them 3rd in DMGP. To be completely honest though Denmark, WTF did you guys do????!!!!! I really can’t understand how Denmark ignored TWO good entries which were Top 10-material and choose a “wannabe Bastille” boy band instead! Definitely feel for both Anja and Simone, either of them could have seen Denmark becoming a serious contender again for the title. 🙁 Prediction: Borderline qualifier or 11th… Read more »

Well, I was very satisfied with the superfinal and I think they all 3 would have been worthy winners. But after seeing Anja perform live, Lighthouse became my least favourite of the 3. It is a good song, but clearly won because of the Danish fangirls once again.

Denmark sits another final at home…
It wasn’t the worst song, but not even close to their best :/
The act is like previous year except on one higher lvl, just one xd
Simone’s song deserved to win, but the live performance wasn’t that great (her vocals were).
Anja… well… amazing vocalls aswell! but the song not so much.

Denmark entry 3/10

So far the most disappointing result NF result. Simone & Anja had quality songs but honestly their stagings lacked a proper ‘concept’. Simone looked like a bride ditched at the altar with that big heart prop. As for Anja, I don’t understand the whole ‘Janet Jackson’ swag. She should’ve pulled another Only Teardrops concept instead.

I totally agree Alex, I wouldn’t be surprised if people were divided between the two female performers and that’s why neither of them won. After all they did get 58% of the vote between them.

I felt Simone could have given a bit more, like she was fighting for the win. Lighthouse X were better live than I expected but nothing new, current or that exciting. Just ok for me.
