The race to win Die Grosse Entscheidungsshow — Switzerland’s Eurovision 2016 selection — has been going on for months. But on February 13 Switzerland finally crowned Rykka their ESC queen with the song “The Last Of Our Kind”. She didn’t just sing her original number: she also wowed with her cover of Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do”.

Rykka and Vincent, who were are favourites to win for months, battled for victory until the last minute, but the result, which was determined by televoting (50%) and a jury (50%), was clearly on Rykka’s side.

Ahead of the final, Rykka also did well with the Wiwi Jury, our in-house panel of musical unprofessionals.

One juror described her act this way: “With shades of Sia and Agnes, Rykka pulls Switzerland into 2016. Her modern entry stands out for its production value and for mixing a hopeful message with dark, electro sounds. It’s heady and modern, yet clearly engineered for Eurovision: see the key change in the final third.”

Switzerland’s Eurovision selection: Full results

  1. Rykka – “The Last of Our Kind”
  2. Bella C – “Another World”
  3. Vincent Gross – “Half a Smile”
  4. Stanley Miller – “Feel the Love”
  5. Theo – “Because of You”
  6. Kaceo – “Disque d’or”

So, what do you think? Did the right song win in Switzerland?

No final for us this year… What a boring song. The best of a bad bunch, yes, but still quite bad and bland.

Well, they chose the best of a bad bucnh, still not convinced about her live performance even though I like the song, it will struggle to qualify in May

I think Vincent would be more successful in the semi final. He had a sweet song and is a really engaging performer. Rykka needs to avoid shouting and ‘over singing’.

Decent song (Switzerland won’t finish dead last this year) but Rykka’s vocals need to improve. When she increases her volume she loses her control. Juries might be turned off, although the public will be receptive enough. Borderline qualifier.

This will qualify in the semi final with a avarage staging.
With a small revamp and a amazing live performance it could be in the top 10.

YES! I was so happy when she won. I have been a huge supporter of RYKKA ever since she submitted her song. This clearly has a strong potential on the eurovision stage. I do agree that she can improve her vocals. But put it this way: the SRF stage limits a lot the scenographics, can you image what this song could do on a swedish eurovision stage? I AM SO LOOKING FORWARD to see her performing in Stockholm. If she doesn’t qualify for the grand final, I’ll be mad. SO mad! Maybe she won’t win the whole thing, but there… Read more »

#2 Spain
#3 Switzerland (would be #2 if her vocals improve – a much better song than “Say yay”)
#4 Malta
#5 Denmark

Very nice chorus … a very underwhelming and very unfocused vocal performance .. if she is better than this … then she left her voice at home. Not a fan of the verses and how the verses transit to the chorus …
As far stage and how the song is presented … I just couldn’t care less. What my ears gave me is enough already.

A little revamp on the vocal production might be needed, and then this song will straight qualify to the final.

I seriously must have been watching a different final to you guys.

This was just… awful… no notes, the song is boring, no stage presence, no staging, no cameracraft.

Decent song and a worthy winner. But I think we overestimate the song. It’s not the magical potion Switzerland thinks it is, and nor is it a song that will sway us over. It will qualify but won’t bother Sebalter’s result.

She looked and sang like a superstar.
By far the best entry.
Switzerland has a chance this year.

Once I completely agree with the results. Rykka and Bella were amazing and it was obvious one of them had to win. Vincent was endearing, though, and I’m glad he finished third. Stanley was excellent, his song not so much. Theo’s song was as boring as ever. And Kaceo… well, let’s just say the last place is the only one they should have got. Very pleased with the Swiss jury/public. Shows they have taste.

This song is a decent entry in comparison with Time to Shine, especially for Switzerland who haven’t been so lucky in recent years, with the exception of Sebalter in 2014. We’ll definitely see Switzerland in the final again, but most likely on the right hand-side of the scoreboard I’m afraid.

She missed some notes, she really must improve her voice.
And this song makes me remember of Sia.
Okay choice, Swtizerland, way better than what you sent last year.

Switzerland made the right choice! After listening to her song multiple times after seeing her expert check performance, I knew that this was the strongest of the remaining six. I wish Rykka all the best, and I hope she does well in Stockholm!
