Second Runner-Up: Ireland’s Nicky Byrne

This week saw the number of Eurovision entries almost double. But despite the increased competition, Ireland’s Nicky Byrne is still clinging onto the top spot. Of the 5,863 votes cast since Monday 15 February“Sunlight” gobbled up 1,922. That’s 32.78% of all votes cast. But are voters starting to tire of Ireland? The ex-Westlife singer is down from 4,249 votes in our previous poll — a drop of over 2,000 votes.

Ireland: Nicky Byrne “Sunlight”

Spain’s Barei is staying strong at two. With 1,532 votes or 26.13% of all votes cast, support for the “Say Yay!” singer remains in line with our last poll when she picked up 1,655 votes.

Barei “Say Yay!”

Austria’s Zoë is the highest new entry at three. The “Loin d’ici” chanteuse attracted 554 votes or 9.45% of all votes cast.

Zoë “Loin d’ici”

There may still be uncertainty surrounding Italy’s song choice, but that hasn’t stopped y’all from backing Francesca Michielin and “Nessun grado di separazione”. The Sanremo runner-up earned 431 votes or 7.35% of all votes cast, just enough to guarantee her fourth place.

Francesca Michielin “Nessun grado di separazione”

Switzerland’s Rykka lands at five. “The Last Of Our Kind” received 330 votes or 5.63% of all votes cast.

Rykka “The Last Of Our Kind”

Elsewhere, the resurgence of Albania’s Eneda Tarifa continues. After narrowly passing out Belgium’s Laura Tesoro last week, the “Përrallë” singer leapfrogs Malta’s Ira Losco to occupy sixth spot — just ten votes separate the pair. Denmark’s Lighthouse X debut at eight, while Georgia’s Nika Kocharov & Young Georgian Lolitaz are saved from last place by a margin of just three points.

As always, the slate will be wiped clean when we relaunch the poll on Monday 22 February. Our current 11 will be joined by songs from Bosnia & Herzegovina, Iceland, Ukraine and Cyprus.

What do you think of the current standings? Does Ireland deserve to be at number one for a fifth week? Who’s your Eurovision 2016 favourite? Let us know below.

He sounded much better on Ukrainian final so I think he will do just fine on the Eurovision. No one should judge him after Ray D’arcy Show, just check out his latest performance.

3. Austria (6.5 out of 10)
Other songs are unbearably poor

Ireland is very overrated, not a bad song but not that good. Also Spain is a bit inflated. There’s no much competition for Barei rigth now, but as long as other entries are revealed she will lose some position for sure (and I’m Spanish). My top 5: 1. Spain 2. Belarus 3. Switzerland 4. Denmark 5. Malta @MGR After seeing that you say “Sunlight” sounds like “Glorious” and “La Voix”, I had to stopped reading… Maybe you should check your ears and, by your other comments, your mind too. I hope that you are only a cynical troll, if not… Read more »

I know that this is not a true result. I’ve watched practically all top 11’s on YouTube. I think all of them had Ireland in the bottom half, never in the top five. Those videos can’t be trolled.

Spanish fans this year are awful. They keep on spamming comments on the Ukrainian semis on Youtube about Barei and her song when Say Yay is just a mediocre and uninspiring song. The more they make noises about Barei and her song, the more other countries will eventually get annoyed and sick of them.

How on Earth did Ireland receive more votes than Spain?! I’m sure somebody is just finding a way to vote loads of times for Ireland.
The song is ok and is kind of catchy.. but it’s quite boring and a usual pop song which lacks something. If this gets through to the final of Eurovision then I feel that this is only because Nicky is quite popular due to his role in Westlife.
He deserves a better song.

MGR don’t need to do any campaign against us. Popular for who? Maybe albanians lately (12×2). We always get thrashed every single may. We are one of the most unpopular of the 50+ countries *Those from the corner*

We don’t even have a possible Portugal support this year, so you can hold your guns down. We appreciate the voting support here, but honestly, we just expect to bring some fun to the contest, that’s all.

None of these songs are winners but Spain and Italy could contend.

MAYBE Malta and Austria but Zoë’s possible performance could be a hit or miss. 12 points from France?

A shame this poll is being compromised so much by frustrated Westlife housewives, who are fooling nobody.

Why should we commiserate over Spain? Because this is big and popular country? And this has to be more important fact than clearly better entries from Malta and Austria?

LOL MGR spanish act won’t look anything near this on Stockholm.

She’s just promoting the song. Think about why a country so far from Spain like Ukraine got interested in inviting Barei. Yeah exactly! It’s because the song it’s flaccid and lax. Sheesh.

That’s what a catchy song + powerful message does for you. It crosses borders.

Now please stop typing.

Here is new performance of Barei – Say Yay and it is even worse. “Say Yay” is just flaccid and lax song. Spain and Ireland MUST change their songs! It is impossible to made good staging to “Sunlight” and “Say Yay”. Come on! At this moment these countries have no chance against more polished entries from Malta, Austria and Hungary (Freddie is clear winner there).

I don’t understand why Nicky is so high omg! The live perfomance and the vocals are so awful. He sings really bad. It is embarrasing that “Say yay!” and Italy’s song actually have lower votes than they deserve, while Ireland is still leading the poll because… I don’t know!!! I think the most important thing is how you get through to the public while you are singing on stage… and Barei, for instance, has the best impression

MGR
MGR

I think this voting is manipulated by Irish and Spanish people and fans of these countries, but not of these entries, because it is hard to be fan of raw, muddy, flaccid and blunt entries. “Sunlight” is clearly “Glorious” mixed with “La Voix”.

The first 24 hours of the voting showed a two horse race between Spain and Austria.

But the longer it takes, the more tilted it gets when the bought votes come in.

Eurovision Song Contest always was about tight, careful and polished entries. How people may think that Ireland, Spain, Switzerland or Albania are polished? They are extremely raw and muddy.

Italy’s song is fantastic, probably a radio hit anywhere near the italian borders, but it’s too deep of a message for 3 Eurovision minutes. This has been a common error over the years, especially for latin countries like Italy or Spain, which they tend to send very meaningful songs. If you also sing it in italian, how do you spread the message properly? It becomes impossible. For many europeans it will be like listening to birdsongs. Yes, very beautiful, but that’s it. I understand they fell in love with songs like this, just to straight away select this “poisoned candy”… Read more »

For me Denmark had bad format of selections. Too many song overall and very bad second round. 42% is less than half, but this rebellion was sufficient to beat two favorites. I’m sure Lighthouse was only 3rd in 1st round.

I wouldn’t underestimate Denmark. I hated the song when I heard the studio version, but their MGP performance was pretty much flawless. It’s a definite ear-worm; apart from Say Yay, it’s the only one of these songs I can remember at all.

I’m spanish and I also think our voting count is a bit too inflated. Not as much as Ireland, though. That doesn’t mean I don’t believe Say Yay! is one of the best. It has to be, but I’m not nervous nor anxious to claim a partial victory. That’s because I believe in our song this year for once and all his potential for improvement. I like Rykka this year. I think it’s the best song for now. Not afraid to say this because it’s a love ballad, nothing to do with ours, so we won’t get shadowed by them… Read more »

Great singer, but man, song is so common, letter is so previsible, chorus is so cheesy…I would use it for an american 80’s TV series soundtrack like baywatch, not for trying to do something on eurovision.

It’s okay, they wanna win wiwibloggs poll. Let them get the wooden spoon.

Embarrassing !!! Stop hijacking the poll sad sad people
So disappointed that Nicky and that calculated, tacky, shallow, badly written song is representing my country ..
The same situation happened with these polls in 2014 and 2013 for Ireland and those songs had the same horrible qualities as sunlight and were disasters at eurovision..
Ireland will be lucky to qualify !!

It’s not rigged – he has a fan base beyond Eurovision who will be sharing the poll link and voting for him regardless of the other songs. There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with that just skews the results. TBH when I’m looking at the results of the poll I’m ignoring Ireland.

7-9 Spain, Ireland, Albania
10-11 Switzerland & Georgia

I’m guessing Ireland will be winning the poll till the end, cause the fans are determined to keep it on top. Same situation like Georgia last year and Armenia the year before. It doesn’t reflect the actual results, though. As I read around, Spain seams to be the fourthrunner. Not that Spain is my favorite entry, but I see a lot of first places on lists. Ireland enjoys about the same support as Austria, Switzerland and Italy, while usually last places on lists go to Georgia or Belarus.
