A week ago Italy revealed its representative for Eurovision 2016. It’s Francesca Michielin, runner-up in the last Sanremo Music Festival with her song “Nessun grado di separazione”, already a number one hit in Italy with more than 3 millions views on YouTube.

As you might remember, the winner of the Italian Eurovision selection, the band Stadio, rejected the chance to sing in Stockholm — and for this reason RAI soon selected Francesca as the replacement. She’s a fresh young lady who we insta-loved!

EUROVISION 2016 TOP 11: OUR FAVOURITES SO FAR

Although several international websites spread the news that “Nessun grado di separazione” will be the Italian entry, the Italian web site Eurofestival News has denied this report, saying that the question of English vs. Italian has not yet been decided.

In fact, this morning, during the show “Benvenuti a Bordo” aired by the Italian Radio Company, radio spokeswoman Cristina Dori confirmed that the song hasn’t been selected yet and that several options are still under evaluation. The Italian Eurovision entry could be sung in Italian, a mix of Italian and English or 100% English.

However, it seems Francesca Michielin has a clear idea: “I would like to sing in English at the Eurovision” she said.

FRANCESCA MICHIELIN “NESSUN GRADO DI SEPARAZIONE”

Would “Nessun grado di separazione” be the right choice for Italy? Would you like to hear an English song for Italy? Let us know below!

As long as she changes the song, it’ll be alright

Noooo! Please don’t change it to English! If she does, it will immediately drop in my ranking. Italian is such a beautiful language (native English speaker here). Spain isn’t even in my top 3 because they chose a trite English ditty. Very disappointed if Italy does the same! 🙁

Seeing as this is the first year in a long while that the contest will be broadcast on RAI1, I’m personally hoping that they sing in Italian – I want to the contest to become more popular in Italy, and I don’t think singing in English is the way to do that.

it’s her right to sing at any language she chooses. I want to listen first the English version of the song to know if she got an accent then it would be very terrible for her. Well if Italy will be disgraced on the final, she’s the one to be blame.

I hope she will sing in Italian because Italy is one of the few countries who always sing in their own language now we have Spain singing in English and Portugal doesn’t participate this year so I really hope she will sing in Italian

NOooo why does every eurovision artist think they have to sing in English to have a good song?? I’m 100% it’ll sound much more beautiful and better in Italian. and so what if the people don’t understand the lyrics, we just want to hear your beautiful in your beautiful language

If she can pull out a Nina Zilli-like performance (not the genre) with Italian and English lyrics, please do.

Francesa, don’t you dare. Il Volo won the televote with 100% italian, singing in english would be just useless.
I could deal with one or two verses in english, but nothing more. Rai, knock some sense into this girl!!

Nessun grado is great so I say leave it be, don’t try to cut 40 seconds out and mess around with the language. Write a new song in English.

I’m actually more concerned about how they’d shorten it than about changing to English – I love Italian, I love linguistic diversity, but some songs can survive or even thrive after translation.

There were those who agreed with the withdrawal of Portugal in Eurovision, and that Portugal is one of those countries that is indifferent the withdrawal, RTP insist on singing in Portuguese, or don’t 100% in Portuguese, but…
This year the ESC will be a flop.

Italy is currently my number one song so far. I do not think that in English it would stay that way cause it would be partially different and it has to be seen if Francesca’s accent is any good. For example, Albania had decent song in 2014 and by translating the lyrics and the singer having terrible accent it dwindled down fast. Congratulations Ukraine, Austria, France, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Macedonia, Greece for having at least one language other than English. I fear this year could be more Anglicized than ever 🙁

Although personally I think ESC should be like JESC wherein you have to sing partly in your national language. However it has to be said it’s up to her what language she sings in. Although I’d imagine RAI would insist she sings at least half in Italian. I feel like the EBU should have an incentive to sing in your national language like maybe getting to pick your running order or at least what half you perform in. Oh well. Eurovision has turned into Melodifestivalen where 90% are in English. And now with the voting. Sorry I rambled :p Having… Read more »

We don’t know if the song will be worse in English. A song mixed with English and Italian would be cool though.

Come on, does EVERYONE need to sing in English? I love English, but diversity of talent is kind of the point. At this point EBU should either officially ban translation of already selected songs or just give up and rename it into Englishvision.

In English the whole song will be ruined. I mean the Italian version is so charming, but ggoing for English in this kind of song would be horrible. I hope she reads this and stops it immediately.
