The latest edition of Sverigetopplistan, the Swedish singles chart, has been released and it offers clues as to which Melodifestivalen songs have captured the attention of the Swedish public. iTunes and Spotify charts have given us hints as to which songs are popular, but Sverigetopplistan – which uses both sales and streaming data – is the first to give an overall look.

Melodifestivalen final

Frans number one single, Sweden, Melodifestivalen, 2016

There’s a clear favourite here – Frans has very comfortably debuted in the No.1 spot, beating stiff competition from such pop luminaries as Zayn, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber, among others. But a No.1 single is not necessarily a guarantee of a Melfest win.

In previous years, winning songs have debuted at much lower chart positions and made their way to No.1. In 2014, Ace Wilder missed out on winning Melfest, but enjoyed four weeks at No.1 – something that Sanna Nielsen never managed.

But it doesn’t look like Ace will do as well this year, with the top dominated by Frans, Molly Sandén and Robin Bengtsson. While we can’t say for sure that Frans will win Melfest, his No.1 single suggests he should at least do very well in the final.

1. Frans – “If I Were Sorry”
11. Molly Sandén – “Youniverse”
13. Robin Bengtsson – “Constellation Prize”
17. Oscar Zia – “Human”
22. Lisa Ajax – “My Heart Wants Me Dead”
26. Wiktoria – “Save Me”
34. Ace Wilder – “Don’t Worry”
49. David Lindgren – “We Are Your Tomorrow”

Andra chansen

The eight andra chansen songs have all charted. It’s worth noting that the songs were released as singles in the week they appeared in their Melodifestivalen semi-final, so this chart doesn’t always represent their highest (or lowest) chart positions.

If we seperate this week’s chart into tonight’s andra chansen duel pairs, this suggests that Panetoz, SaRaHa and Samir & Viktor will win their duels. We’re making it too close to call Albin & Mattias and Boris René.

4. Samir & Viktor – “Bada nakna”
8. SaRaha – “Kizunguzungu”
20. Panetoz – “Håll om mig hårt”
31. Albin & Mattias – “Rik”
32. Boris René – “Put Your Love on Me”
46. Dolly Style – “Rollercoaster”
50. Isa – “I Will Wait”
66. Molly Pettersson Hammar – “Hunger”

@Branko
Everytime you use “If” (possiblity), you have to use “were” it’s a rule. You cannot say “If I was sorry”. Do you remeber Beyonce’s song “If I WERE a boy”?

Might be stupid question, but… Isn’t the title false? Shouldn’t it be “If I WAS Sorry”? Or did I go to wrong school? Any motherspeaker here?

I think “If I were sorry” is a bad copy of “Catch and release” by Matt Simons

Oh no! Not Frans PLEASE! His song is boring and he can’t sing!

Ace Wilder, Robin Bengtsson or Oscar Zia are realy better!

I think international juries WILL have no choice but to praise this along with Molly Sanden’s to prevent possible tension from Swedish viewers. It happened in Spanish NF for Barei’s SayYay. Producers will probably have to notify them before they give the points. A lot of Swedes were a little pissed when YOHIO didn’t get chosen in 2013..

THERE’S NOT ONLY EUROVISION FANS WATCHING AND VOTING! Most of the Eurovision viewers are not fans of ESC, they just watch it and vote for the song they liked the most. I think the only song that could bring Sweden another victory is If I Were Sorry. The fact that it’s not typical Eurovision fan taste means nothing. Random Eurovision viewer doesn’t need dramatic song with powerhouse vocals, they need something refreshing. If I Were Sorry is just what you can find on a thousands of people’s playlists. It’s easy to listen, it has nice chill melody and rememorable lyrics… Read more »

The fact that this song is first don’t tell that he will win because Sweden know well that if he will win Sweden will take the worst place! There are more good song in melodifestivalen! Gooo Oscar for the win … 😉

Frans will win easily, that’s what Sweden wants (Other acts will split the votes). And it’s the best choice to get their 7th winning which is very likely based on what we know from other countries. About the odds, Sweden is catching up Poland and Russia is going down. Go Frans!

Say what you want, but both, Catch & Releaee and If I Were Sorry are amazing songs! There’s no other choice but Frans.

Frans song is not a copy in the sense of plagiarism. “If I Were Sorry” was written before the Catch & Release song was even released.

Now people are pointing that Frans’ song is a copy of another song called Catch and Release (Deepend Mix). I thought the Swedes have already learned from Mans’ Heroes controversy about allegedly copying David Guetta’s song? Letting him win the MF final could possibly make it worse and this will make a lot of noise from the public.

For me Samir & Viktor, Saraha, Panetoz and Boris Rene will qualify to final (order according to the number of gained votes)

I think that we have a winner: frans to stockholm
but the svt has to get rid of the international jury, i dont think that an international jury would understand this entry

Molly Sanden will be closer to 10th place than 1st place in final. Everyone sees that this is extremely weak crap.

Milla

As I said.. I don’t trust these statistics. Oscar Zia has a very strong song with a lot power and a nice message in my opinion. But I also like Robin and Wiktoria. Frans popularity is also based on his history with the swedish people. It’s going to get really interesting to see how the international juries will vote. I have a feeling they will not have the same winner as the swedish people. Just like in 2013 and 2014. Frans has so many rivals. It’s a final with many good songs.

Ok please stop. Maybe it’s not the best year but Sweden can’t win just because it’s sweden. Frans’ song, if it’s chosen won’t beat russia, latvia, or poland. It’s a weak entry.

But his song is very weak tbh.
He’s not in the top when it comes to any platform, neither Youtube, Spotify, iTunes etc.

YAAAAS.. No I don’t believe that’s all with Oscar. The way people wrote about his song and performance.. calling it a Melodifestivalen winner and when people get the question of who’s their favourite then Oscar is

oftened mentioned. Frans is not quite there in my opinion. But we’ll see what happends. Nothing is decided yet.

Well it’s understandable that everyone talks about Oscar since he came out right before melfest started. It was obviously a tactic to keep his name out there.

With most songs now released for eurovision 2016 I actually think Sweden could win the contest with Frans … Not by a large margin but something similar to what Lena did in 2010..
It’s not the strongest year and he could do it …

Just saying, but Norway’s Freddy Kalas is also at #1 in Norwegian Spotify charts (still!), while Agnete is somewhere around #11.
I don’t question Frans’ popularity in Sweden, but at the same time I believe nothing is decided yet.

Milla

I mean popularity in social medias is also power, where Frans only holds the number 3 spot.

Milla
Milla

Still Oscar Zia is the one people talk about the most in social medias. Like Måns just before the final. He’s been on the nr. 1 spot since Melodifestivalen started. For example the reactions on Melodifestivalens
facebook page was great. Even more
positive than with Frans and Molly. I don’t trust these statistics of how popular a song is and how many views a song and performance has. That means Samir and Viktor could easily win Melodifestivalen as well! 😀

also something that means power. Frans is only on third place.

Måns was last out of all contestant last year. Number 7 in the last semifinal. In the final he was number 6 yes.

@Loo He also usually put his favorites at 6, 8, 9 and 10.

The most exciting thing tonight is the reveal of the running order for the finale. Hoping for a good spot for Molly, Robin, Ace and Frans.

YES Björkman is super smart. That’s why he usually puts his favorite entries at some random running order so they can surprise and build up momentum instead of being seen as the favorite (He told me that in person) lex Loreen in 2012 and Sanna in 2014. Sometimes, but not always, he put his favorite at the last spot. Last time was last year with Måns. But at the end of the day he is the producer for the show and he follows the dramaturgy that is best for the show.

I would love Frans’ win! But I’ll also be happy with Robin, Boris or Oscar. This year boys are stronger than girls. In my opinion, Sweden shouldn’t choose Ace Wilder or Molly if they want a Top 10.

If Swedes want a top ten they will sent Ace or Molly. But if they want to win they have only one choice and this is Robin!

So people are comparing Frans to Lena.

Ignoring the fact Lena had a better song with a memorable hook.

If Sweden sends Frans I expect Sweden to have around 46 points in the final.

Wiktoria, Molly S and Ace Wilder would be a safe bet for Sweden.

The main question is: do the people who buy records also vote in the final of Melodiefestivalen? If yes, then Frans will win. If no, then it’s up for grabs. Could even be Sammi & Victor! 🙂

The only problem I have with Franses song is the repetitive lyrics. But it could come out as winner like Lena’s Sattelite, for example. Just to name a few of this entries advantages: simplicity, cute face, nice voice, lyrics that everyone understands, no screaming, no darkness, no drama, and I expect a beautiful production from Sweden as usual. Any other contenders to the cuteness award? Jamie? Justs?

I think a good idea would be to ask world chess champion Magnus Carlsen who will win Eurovision Song Contest 2016. He is supposedly the smartest man in the world and he should know it.

Loo

@EugeneESCUK Why are you so sure that Molly is his Favorite? I can guarantee you that’s not the case. Björkman is the producer of the show and he’d put Molly last due to her favoriteship. I’ve met him A couple of Times when I was involved in MF stuff a couple of years ago and he has good taste in music so I can imagine him having Frans or Robin B as his favorite. His placements in the running order has NOTHING to do with his personal taste. He wants to make good TV.

I hope for that, I would love to see Wiktoria, Isa or Ace to be represent of Sweden this year. But I don t thik so that wili happen because top 3 with televote with huge points wili be Frans, Samir and Victor and Molly Sanden with no good song . Only if international juries give small points to favorite of televote like in 2013 when Yohio flop with international juries.

Frans is really popular here, and I do think he has a chance of doing well at Eurovision.
Something that is worth mentioning is that some of the songs does better at the charts because they are more suited for the radio rather than the competition, like Robin and Samir & Viktor. Frans also got that kind of sound which is why I think he has so much view and streams.

I think a lot of you seem to forget that Sweden has developed a pattern when it comes to choosing an artist to represent them at Eurovision. Please see the list below…

2010 – Anna
2011 – Eric
2012 – Loreen
2013 – Robin
2014 – Sanna
2015 – Mans
2016 – ?

I believe a female artist will be chosen to represent Sweden this year. I think Bjorkman wants to keep things gender even.

If Sweden want to finish like in 2013 they wili sent Frans.
If Sweden want to be in TOP 5 , they wili sent Wiktoria, Isa, Robin
If Sweden want to be in TOP 10, they wili sent Oscar or Ace
If they want to flop like in 1992 they wili sent Saraha or Samir & Victor
