The Eurovision grand final might not be until May, but some of the artists are already doing battle. Spain’s Barei and Sweden’s Frans have spent most of the week fighting it out on the Spotify Viral Chart. As it stands, “Say Yay” is winning the race — but is it all that it seems?

Spotify Global Viral Chart (as of 12pm CET, March 18):

spotify viral chart barei frans

The Viral Chart combines song listens with the amount of times the song has been shared. This means that whilst the song might not have been played the most on Spotify, it has been spread to a wider audience — which helps popularise songs ahead of Eurovision. As the week has gone on, Barei has overtaken Frans on this chart, though the fact both songs are in the top 25 is a great sign for both of them.

Whilst Barei is currently charting higher than Frans, the Swedish singer is charting in more Eurovision 2016 countries. He’s currently in the viral top 50 of 12 of those countries, whereas Barei is only charting in Spain’s viral top 50. The difference here, however, is that Barei is also charting in a number of Spanish-speaking countries around the world. Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica and Peru are all saying “yay” along with Barei, but unless the EBU have another surprise up their sleeves, that won’t help Barei too much in May.

There’s even more reason for Frans to celebrate. Over the past seven days, “If I Were Sorry” has been streamed 4.7 million times around the world. There is slight catch to that. Sweden alone has contributed 3.8 million of those streams — but the remaining figure is still nothing to be sniffed at two months before the grand final. Does this point to a seventh Swedish victory?

We need to give a special shoutout to Spain, where six Eurovision 2016 acts are in their viral top 50. Spanish Eurovision fans are sharing their favourites and doing them proud!

Eurovision 2016 acts on Spotify Viral Charts in Eurovision 2016 countries:

Frans — Australia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden
Amir — France, Spain
Sergey Lazarev — Spain, Sweden
Barei — Spain
Zoe — Austria
Douwe Bob — Belgium
Michal Szpak — Poland
Jamie-Lee Kriewitz — Spain
Dami Im — Spain
Joe and Jake — United Kingdom

Do you think that charting high will help Barei and Frans going in to Eurovision 2016? Let us know what you think and who you’re listening to below.

SAY YAY! Is viral trending in Sweden and UK not only in Spain and South America. It’s a really catchy song and has start to grow, in few weeks the commercial success will make impossible not to consider it if you are bookie as a winner.

I do not get the Sweden’s entry and all the hype, sorry. There are far more interesting and better songs in my opinion. :):)

Great to see how well they are doing, but I would rather see how many people actually bought their songs. I think Spain has a better chance than usual at doing well in Eurovision this year. For start, it stands out, those weird but cool feet movements and most importantly (even though people don’t want to hear it…) it’s in ENGLISH. And for Sweden, I love this song. I’m from Ireland and of course I don’t want them winning again, but I actually rather this than last years. Only problem is, I only liked it after 2 or 3 listens,… Read more »

This is not a real rivalry. Sweden and Russia do not want to be strong. They want others to be weak.

Malta ruined their song and this is clearly Swedish-Russian conspiracy. They eliminate rivals in this way.

Spotify is a good indicator of who the -30 under crowd likes a ESC song. That’s about 25-40 of voters.

There’s always a “But…”

It’s only an indicator of who will do well.

We all know that Sweden will get overrated points by juries like they did from 2012 to 2015.

Barei is not even in the top 50 in Spain. This is just her record label trying to make some noise because I’ve checked other countries’ lists and she’s nowhere to be found.

the thing is that you show no respect. Moreover, the overwhelming hatred against our song this year has come from the Swedes. On YouTube, for example, there are hardly any comments other than Swedes and there are those who hate and are really unpleasant. Last year and the two years before that I had been able to agree with you to some point, but you are focus your anger in the wrong direction this year. People on wiwibloggs has not been close to be as unpleasant to Sweden this year as other years. It is the Swedes hate against Sweden… Read more »

I have never witnessed this much ignorance and arrogance at the same place before. Wiwibloggs, you should start moderating comments so we’ll get a more positive mode here. Please!!

Like Voltaire once said:

“I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.”

Respect people!

I will NOT stop it! The law of jante will NEVER affect me -.- Excuse me, but as anybody else I have the right to tell my opinion. I’m VERY humble and I DON’T THINK WE WILL WIN. The only thing is that I’m tired of the hate Sweden ALWAYS gets because we are the favorite almost every year. It’s not fair. It’s very possible Sweden will win again this year (Even if I personally don’t think we will at the end of the day) and to deny that is just stupid. I have had enough of ESC fans ignorance… Read more »

In general, the swedes doesn’t even care that much about the competition. Nor near that much as everyone seem to think. In general, only families are watching all our competitions regularly. I am the only one I know how cares and watch and make my husband and friend watch the finals by violence every single year. In a party last summer, there were actually two persons who had missed Måns victory. They were in my age, about 30 and they don’t have any kids. They definitely are doing something else saturday nights. Every single post by Loo makes me want… Read more »

It definitely shows that these songs are listened to in some countries. Good for them.

However, I doubt that this says anything at this stage. They are both big countries or crazy about Eurovision. If we take MALTA or LATVIA, for example, they are smaler countries and it is harder to find enough volume to popularise their songs outside their countries as yet.

P.S. Anyone knows how to tell how much of Spotify total listens are in for which countries? I was surprised for this statistics in this article. Sounds like a cool feature.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C698_dLckRw Here is Jean-Michel Jarre talking about Frans 😛 @Milla Alltså nu får ni ge er. Read more »

Dull, smothered, plastic and shallow. Look at Il Volo – 2 shots, look at Mans Zelmerlow – 3 shots and now look at this weak, oversized, loose and lax crap from Russia. No chance for top 5.

I open this article and think I’m going to see some actual MUSIC CHART figures from these two artists, but it ends up being Spotify’s “Viral” chart…. well, even Rebecca Black can be “viral”, doesn’t mean it translates into actual people listen to the music for *good* reasons.

When artists actually chart high on the music streaming top 10 or something, then it will be something to talk about. This, however, doesn’t prove anything.

Generally Sweden, Hungary and Cyprus are real favorites. Netherlands, Finland and Moldova also can be good for televoting. Rest are plastic, dull craps.

Okay, so you find Eurovision to be a joke and that it’s terrible this year. If you don’t like it, then don’t watch it. I’m pretty sure one less viewer out of 180 million viewers doesn’t count towards much. Anyways, I’ll be enjoying the show.

Eurovision is about 100 million viewers. Il Volo, Polina Gagarina and Mans Zelmerlow gained more than 20 million votes last year. Who has chance this year? Sweden, Hungary and Cyprus can get above 1 million votes. Of course I knot that 5 entries gained above 1 million votes in final of Melodifestivalen but rest of the world is not so crazy.
