First she was our “7th Wonder” and now she can “Walk On Water”. Malta’s Eurovision 2016 singer Ira Losco dazzled at last weekend’s Eurovision In Concert in Amsterdam. Before she took to the Melkweg stage, our William caught up with the two-time Eurovision star for a quick chat. In amongst the usual song contest chatter, Ira revealed that she’d love to host Junior Eurovision 2016. And we had a true “Walk On Water” moment as she worked out a tsunami survival plan — “Immersed In Water” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

Ira Losco at Eurovision in Concert — Interview

wiwibloggs filmed a reaction video to your song and we were hyping you, because we loved you. Did it put extra pressure or expectation on you?

No, I always think like this — I never put extra pressure on myself, especially when I decided to take part again for Malta and everyone was like “Ok, so you’ve come second, so now what’s next?” and it doesn’t work like that. I placed second so now I have to place first? You know, it doesn’t work like that. This year the contest is so full of great songs. It’s full of musicians who are bringing so many different genres to the table with fresh sounds and it’s just great to be here. If we manage to make it into the top ten it will be amazing enough. It doesn’t need to be top five or top three, top ten is amazing.

Malta is often considered an underdog due to the country being small, yet the bookies have you so high. Do you think it’s realistic?

I think I can do it because I do believe in myself a lot and I do believe the song is a great song. I love being on stage and I love giving it my all. About the bookies — I’m not a person who would normally understand these things. It’s great to be ranked in that position but I don’t let it affect me or my performance.

Malta is one of the safer places in Europe — beautiful weather, no tsunamis, no terrorism yet… Where would you host Eurovision if you won?

If Malta had a tsunami, I don’t think it would be very safe! We wouldn’t be walking on water, we’d be immersed! The perfect spot for Eurovision would be something, ironically, on water. There is definitely a venue to host Eurovision and we do have amazing weather in Malta. Who wouldn’t want to be in Malta in May? The sun is shining 365 days a year!

Junior Eurovision will be back in Malta this year. Can we expect an appearance from you?

I think that’s a great idea. I’d love to be there, so take note please! I would love to host the show.

What’s the most asked question you’ve had on this promotional tour?

Probably the differences between Eurovision 2002 and 2016 and what made me come back to Eurovision would be the most asked questions.

Is “Walking on Water” your first drum and bass song?

No, I’ve released my first single to my upcoming album called “Haunted By Love” and that’s a drum and bass song. I’m trying to carry on with the theme. On April 8 it was released by Warner Music Sweden. It’s quite a big deal. I’ve been told it’s doing quite well.

Being a Maltese artist and now known across Europe – it’s quite a big accomplishment!

Of course! The island is so small. But we have a lot to offer. We have a lot of sun, a lot of good food and a lot of good people – like me!

@This is my Opinion (TIMO)

why, Ira is just kind and a warm person, had you expected her to say that she’s going to win, or some arrogant answer, of course not

Ira is in it to win it, of course, but she’s smart enough, that you should not come across as arrogant and cocky 🙂

@redarrow

yeah i agree with you, down to earth warm person 🙂

She has to be honest, that walk on water is not a song that Malta should use to send Ira losco to eurovision if they want to fight for victory. yes she is right even top 10 would be amazing if she qualified for final. lt seems Malta doesn’t want or care to win like they used to be. Oh well no one will force them lol good luck lra losco

@CookyMonzta

can i also count on your support for Ira? 🙂

Dima Bilan was overrated in my opinion

only Russian acts that wowed me were Polina Gagarina, Dina Garipova and Tolmachevy Twins 🙂

@Andrew: Very few people expect ANYONE to win, after 14 YEARS away from the contest, and so many changes since then. This contest is not the same as it was in 2002. No one should be surprised if she considers a top-10 finish a moral victory for her, especially after changing the song.

Now, if she wins, 14 years after finishing 2nd, that would be totally phenomenal. Dima Bilan took only 2 years to go from 2nd to 1st.

@MMs

well at least she’s not as arrogant, and she admits there are other good songs this year competing

I like her live performances so far, she’s saving the high note at the end for Stockholm i think 🙂

@Andrew: She is in it to win it but she knows how difficult it is for Malta to win (Malta is not Russia) and she said she will be still happy with being in top 10

Almost every eurovision articles about some eurovision party always starts with interview with Jamala, Ira or Amir.

@NN

well I’m also loving the songs of Azerbaijan and Czech Republic and Croatia and Bulgaria

but Malta, Ira has got the looks, she sings really good live, and she’s a kind warm person off stage, she’s at least not thinking about winning

Jamala is arrogant, she first needs to qualify i think, this arrogance puts me off her, the song however has got a nice story in it, so i do hope it qualifies to the final

but NN, you get my apologies if you’re annoyed by it 🙂

@Andrew

well if you’re saying your going to win, it would come over as arrogance

Ira is just a sweet lady, of course she has ambition, but i like her attitude, at least no arrogance from her 🙂

this is exactly why i like her, a Diva on stage and a very kind person off stage 🙂

Don`t like such attitude. You should participate for winning, not “top 10 would be good”. I like how Jamala answered this question – “After winning Eurovision I`ll make EU concert tour”.
