Sergey Lazarev’s fall on stage might just send Russia falling from top spot in the betting order. During his first rehearsal of Eurovision 2016 earlier today, the Russian pop star stumbled and fell off his complicated staging during a run-through. The betting market has, unsurprisingly, immediately reacted to this, with Russia’s odds drifting quickly, with several bookmakers cutting Lazarev to the 9/4 favourite in the Eurovision 2016 odds.

Watch: Snippet of Sergey Lazarev’s first rehearsal

As you can see from the above clip, the staging includes several platforms that are concealed, with Sergey leaping and posing from them, much like the official music video. It was during one of these jumps that Sergey missed his mark, forcing that particular run to be stopped.

eurovision 2016 odds update 2nd may sergey lazarev

Of course, it’s important to remember that this little stumble occured during Sergey’s first run-through of the song on a new stage. He also completed full runs of the song after this, which shows that he can pull the staging off. However, the betting market will wonder whether the added pressure of a live audience – and all those watching at home – could mean Sergey could stumble once again at either the semi final or the final itself.

Sergey Lazarev first rehearsal reaction

The response means that Sergey is now practically tied with France’s Amir with several of the bookmakers. Amir’s first rehearsal will not come until after Sergey’s second rehearsal, with both taking place on Friday. Could we see France take the lead after this point?

Do you think that Sergey has what it takes to remain at the top of the bookmakers, or do you think Russia will finally lose their spot as favourites? Let us know in the comments section below and check back tomorrow to see the odds for semi final one, with the final nine countries rehearsals to come.

Mans was great performance but this technology does not belong only him. Many people visit concerts of famous world stars and they used it for many years:))It is funny to hear that it belongs only Mans:))Eurovison must develop! if eurovision wants to have else more popularity , it must develop! I tis normal. When you go on concert of world star you don t want only listen songs you want to see show. many people that not need show, honesty say that you lie!

The best songs in Eurovision have won since 2012 and this year Russia have the best and catchiest song, regardless of the rest of the schizzle. Just my opinion

@Anton
Well, I DON’T like YOUR simplicity, Anton. The word SIMPLE may have different shades of meaning. Can you imagine that? “Simple” may be of high quality, while “a show” may be as shallow as……..
Why don’t you go to some streaptease bar to see a SHOW? D’you like that suggestion? No? So don’t send me to a karaoke bar.
Are you always so “nice” to people who don’t think the same as you? Oooh, poor you. Do you have any friends?

I love simplicity. 🙂 But this is MY opinion and I know, power b., many people find it just boring. That’s their choice and simplicity is MY choice.
Can’t we just be beautifully different? 😉

I hope you are right and as you wrote “this year the winner will have a simple song” or in other words – the winner will be simply a beautiful song, not the technology.

Eugene, this has nothing to do with Sweden at all. There are several simple songs this year. Simple songs well performed sometimes impress more than all the pyrotechnics you can come up with.It has happened in ESC before, and it happens in concertos a lot. Last year was last year. Måns won because he didn’t have a simple song in a year where many did have them. This year when many artists does the Måns routine of keeping it technical and blending us those who do opposite should do well and even win. Most winners win because they do something… Read more »

@power b. So you were lucky three times. I saw her once and her “Flawless” was not flawless at all. Maybe it’s because of dancing – breath problems. You are probably her fan so you will always find her flawless. And that’s what being a fan is all about. I understand that. 🙂 I just like some of her songs. The whole long discussion of so many people here gave me one conclusion – I don’t know why people call others haters if they say they don’t like something. I said SOMETHING because it’s usually about disliked things not people.… Read more »

Yes, I’m perfectly OK pumpkin. Have you heard Beyonce live? Then you would know what I mean. Her vocals are good as long as it is a STUDIO version.
@Anton
Whoever or whatever allowed you to think that I hate Sergei or Russia?! I rarely hate anyone or anything. But this one I do hate: too much technology where it is not necessary.

I can agree on Madonna vocals – it’s really her weakest feature, however her charm and maybe song messages, or maybe she just lucky to be accepted for her scandalous past. It does not matters since we’re talking about SONG contest. I’m a strong supporter of strong voices, meaningful songs and minimalist (or at least not over-used) staging. If some act fails to deliver good voice or have silly/mean song I’m not going to support it no matter how pompous or gay they staging would be. Wen we argue on likes/dislikes people tend to forget that others might have different… Read more »

Bringing the next step doesn’t always mean technology and blasting it out. Sometimes it can mean just having a simple song that does the opposite to majority of the songs. Last year Måns did it cause many songs were simple and he stood out. A winner usually is the opposite to last years winner.
This year when many acts goes the Måns way and uses projector the one who doesn’t use it could win.
So this year the winner will have a simple song.

If someone is a poor singer, then he/she must be supported by technology. Beyonce or Madonna have poor vocals. There are stars who sing and dance or even only sing and yet they have a concert audience of many thousands.

Why don’t you say to Madonna, Beonce and other big stars that their shows are not technology shows and they must just sing and dance during their tours?

Just wake the PHUCK up already! it was a rehearsal! Not the final directors cut. Jesus Christ, you’re so picky! You mentioned mans, wurst, Iceland and whatever, the majority of tv viewers won’t recall any of them, and the reaction for Russia’s entry will be smth like – wow, I’ve seen Beyoncé doing that $h!t, awesome dude!

Projections are aright if they serve a purpose to the performance. For Måns they did since it told a story about bullying and child abuse.
Don’t know about Amir yet but it might have a purpose.
Sergey only have them to shove off, without really having any purpose. He figured it worked last year, so it will work this year again.

A Million Voices was a much better song that deserved to end up high. This years entry is much weaker and don’t deserve to end up high. But it probably will

it will be fun if jury will give to Lazarev actual low points for his cheap voice, song and cloned visuals, tele-voters will be sure he’s a winner and won’t vote for him in semi, and as a result he’ll fail to qualify.

Well isn’t it theatrical superstition that a bad rehearshal means a great performance? We should wish all 42 acts a great performance. Break a leg. In bocca al lupo.

Awhile back I started thinking of Eurovision not as a song contest, but as a song festival. Shoot, I’m stilling listening to Hera Bjork’s “Je Ne Sais Quoi”.

@Random.sage2.5 Lazarev is not Gagarina, what it have to do with Rusophobia? if someone is not considering Russian song as a valid song to win, it’s not because of Russia but because of pathetic sound, look and feel of Lazarev’s song. Are you claiming that “Rusophobia level” in worlds doubled since last year or what’s your point? maybe you’re the one here who is suffering from Rusophilia if you will vote for something cheap because it’s Russia? if you insist, you’re Rusophile or Russian. No one cares when Russians is getting victimized and moan about Rusiphobia. Have you seen from… Read more »

Russia didn t won the jury vote last year. First was Sweden, 2nd Latvia , Russia was on 3 rd place with much better song then this years song in terms of quality.
Russia wili be maybe first with televote thank to 9 ex soviet countries, plus countries like Serbia,Montenegro… where many citizens are big russophiles… but I don t see Russia in TOP 5 with juries, maybe even in TOP 10 with juries.

OK, I just checked Russian news, all internet news telling about his clumsy fall, largest newspaper (mk.ru) wrote big sugar coated story about his fall and how he’s the leader in betting, about press at the rehearsals who perceive Lazarev as a winner and they finished their article with the bold statement that he’ll 100% win.
I don’t get it. do they just spreading sweet propaganda like every Russian mass media, or do they know something that we don’t know?

Denis

This year something simple with a simple staging will win. None of these projector thing that doesn’t add anything to the story. It’s always the opposite to previous year that wins.
And Måns at-least had a purpose with the technology: It was to illustrate the story he told about bullying, a story that meant something to him.
Sergey uses this cause he can, that’s the difference. It serve no purpose other to demonstrate how much money Russia puts into the contest. It’s a cold false trick that won’t do.

Mans is waving a “mapping flag” at the border of a cliff, meanwhile lots of countries are running at him and consequently falling off that cliff like uncontrolled sheeps. Expect a few more countries playing with mappings. All of them are going to fail. What they didn’t understand is that Mans used that mapping for a cause, not for the sake of using it. He was telling a story. Now a few countries believe that the key to win was using this technology. BIG NO. How easy would be winning then? It was the beautiful story he told and the… Read more »

@Oostenrijk: Not only your words are being marked, but also being put on TOP priority because MUSIC has to win … and if the word MUSIC is a hard concept for people to grasp then maybe one should be entertained with some popcorns while watching Sergey fall like the Titanic from that fake Iceberg wall and singing dramatically that he is the only one and nothing matters but him.

I never really loved Russia this year, but in a weak year like this it was always near the top. But now with this circus act staging, my jaws did not drop, but the song did in my personal list. To me it looks like a freak accident, inspired by Conchita’s wings and Mans’ projections to deliver a mess of a performance. Maybe this performance is giving Iceland a headache.

This year something simple and vocal will win. Mark my words.

Yea. My opinion is that he has too much of everything happening on stage plus he is moving along with it. I have a feeling in past few years Eurovision is not anymore about the delivering song but focus is on everything behind and around the stage. Thankfuly gimmicks and half naked girls jumping around stage era is over, but nowdays these visual effects are now used wayyyy to much……and the real art is to find balance. Sorry Sergey’s performance does not leave people relaxed like Mans last year. He probably looked so angry as he tried to focus on… Read more »
