The first act for Melodifestivalen 2017 is known after the final of the Swedish radio songwriting competition, Svensktoppen nästa. The competition was won by the Malmbäck pop singer Noomi with her song “Intoxicated”. However, she won’t be heading to Melodifestivalen. That honour has instead gone to the Örebro indie rock group Les Gordons.

Les Gordons won’t be able to perform their Svensktoppen nästa entry “Need to Feel” at Melodifestivalen, though. All Svensktoppen nästa entries are released before the 1 September deadline, “Need to Feel” is not eligible for Eurovision. But Les Gordons will be able to enter a brand new song at Melodifestivalen, hopefully making a good impression on Swedish viewers.

Svensktoppen nästa is an annual competition organised by Sveriges Radio, aiming to discover Sweden’s next hit radio song. Twenty-five regional radio stations each enter a song, from which eight finalists are selected by the jury. The finalists battled it out at the grand final, which was held today as part of the Linköping Town Festival, with the winner selected by public SMS vote and jury vote.

The eight finalists performed their songs, which were then whittled down to the two superfinalists: Jimmy Ottosson with “Rising Rivers” and Noomi with “Intoxicated”.

Wiwibloggs readers came close to agreeing with the overall winner. In our recent poll, readers preferred Small Town Girls and their song “Do Your Thing” as the winner, with 27.44% of the vote. But Noomi was in a close second place with 26.51% of the vote. Les Gordons made less of an impressions, with only 5.12% of the vote.

Wiwi Poll Results: Who should win Svensktoppen Nästa 2016?

  1. “Do Your Thing” – Small Town Girls 27.44%
  2. “Intoxicated” – Noomi 26.51%
  3. “Rising Rivers” – Jimmy Ottosson 11.16%
  4. “Bullshit Affair” – LiRic 11.16%
  5. “2 Wrongs Don’t Make 1 Right” – SaVe 9.77%
  6. “Allt som vi va”- Mackan n’ Matthew 5.12%
  7. “Need to Feel” – Les Gordons 5.12%
  8. “Sluta gömma dig” – Vindstyrka 12 3.72%

What do you think of Noomi and her winning song? Will Les Gordons be a good act for Melodifestivalen 2017? Share your thoughts below.

Need To Feel is a good indiepop / rock song. Nice to hear a band like that in MF. More of that please

We’ve already seen what happens when the Svensktoppen winner is not selected for MF. I don’t expect anything differently here. Les Gordons is likely to fail to qualify either for the final or for Andra Chansen.

I guess we have our first 6 or 7th place in the semi-final..
I don’t understand why they still bother with this selection. The artists chosen never go anywhere, and always ends up as fillers. So much selection for nothing really.
I want it abolished for next year, and just focus on the the regular MF selection instead

I’ll be one to say I love the choice to take Les Gordons to Melodifestivalen. Diversity of music in the contest is always a good thing. We need more indie rock representation and even if they don’t make it to the finals, Sweden needs to show that it can bring more to the table than upbeat schlager.

Why do they keep doing this? No offense but most of these artists just kinda waste space at MF

Will the song be crap like most winners? I swear, those Melfest songwriters/composers don’t help out enough to throw a decent melody for svenktop artists.

Neither does Germany with Clubkonsert but that’s neither here nor there.

But seems the song for ESC2017 must be not published elsewhere before 1st of September?

I feel like the jury picks an artist they know will fail in Melodifestivalen to make it easier for the well-known names they’re pushing to win to qualify from the semis. Noomi could’ve done great with a good song yet they pick the artist who fits the standard for Melodifestivalen music the worst.
