Hungary’s A Dal is one of the most successful national finals, with a 100% qualification rate. Broadcaster Duna Media Service Provider has now opened applications for A Dal 2017, and again they’re looking for high quality entries for Hungary.

a-dal-2017The organisers make clear that A Dal is “not a routine talent show”. They are specifically looking for “new, high-quality Hungarian songs” and want only experienced singers to enter — such as those who have released albums or appeared on television shows.

Singers must also be Hungarian citizens or speak Hungarian as a native language, though songwriters from other countries can enter if their song is performed by a Hungarian singer.

Dates for the A Dal heats, semi-finals and grand final have not yet been announced, but based on previous years, we can expect the shows to run from mid January to late February 2017.

Applications for A Dal 2017 close on Sunday, 20 November.

Since the launch of A Dal in 2012, the show’s winners have consistently qualified for the Eurovision grand final. The most successful entries have been ByeAlex, whose sweet hipster ballad “Kedvesem (Zoohacker Remix)” placed 10th in 2013, and András Kállay-Saunders, whose edgy dubstep exploration of domestic violence “Running” place fifth in 2014.

In recent years, Hungary hasn’t earned such strong results. In 2015, Boggie’s subdued peace song “Wars for Nothing” managed only 20th place. Earlier this year, Freddie’s “Pioneer” which was criticised for indistinct singing and cheesy staging, did marginally better in 19th place.

With Hungary putting effort into ensuring that A Dal produces high quality entries, they no doubt are still very much focused on Hungary taking home its first ever Eurovision win.

What do you think? Who would you like to see at A Dal 2017? Have your say below!

Why 2017 is an odd number ?
Do you believe in numerology and astrology ?
Do you believe that ESC held in taurus brings slow songs winners, and in geminis – energetic songs winners ?

Hungary is very hit and miss, Pioneer was great as was Running. But 2015 and 2013 were terrible. Maybe it’s an even/odd thing, which isn’t good as 2017 is an odd number :'(

If Kallay-Saunders Andras will want to compete again, I think he will be in ESC 2017.

“Pioneer” was a decent song, just not a strong and exciting one for me. I thought Freddie sounded like he was gargling his words by the time he hits the chorus.

@HarpyDarper

I agree, I don’t remember any criticism against Pioneer. I thought the general opinion was it was one of the stronger entries. Regardless, it was my favorite song and I do hope Freddie returns to Eurovision.

Many handsome dudes from Hungary.

🙂

Anyway, Hungary is now one of my favourite countries in ESC. No bih diaspora support, no friendly votes, but they still do well. A proof ANY country can do well.

I’m really looking forward to what Hungary comes up with, they are one of the strongest countries this decade for me.
I thought their entry this year was mostly well received by pundits, I don’t remeber these criticisms.
Something random I’ve just noticed, but on ByeAlex’s shirt, is that the knight from Monty Python?
