David Carreira_Portugal_2017

Actor, model, composer, pop sensation — at only 25 years of age David Carreira is a force to be reckoned with in the Portuguese music industry.

He’s already conquered the hearts of ladies (and gentleman) across the country, so it isn’t a total surprise that he’s now making in-roads with the Eurovision community.

And on Tuesday he made that very clear by winning ESC Portugal‘s initiative “Your Choice” 2017 — a fan poll to determine who the Portuguese people want at ESC. We’re happy to get behind David too…

His debut album “N.1” (2011) peaked at number one in Portugal and his latest — “3” — already has a couple of hits.

Singing in Portuguese, English and French, he has developed an international career and is particularly known on the French music scene, which could only serve him well at Eurovision itself.

David won the annual poll organised by ESC Portugal, which combines votes from the public and an expert jury.

Áurea, the boyband DAMA, the pop band Amor Electro and former Idol winner Diogo Piçarra complete the Top 5.

The initiative began with a list of 168 artists and bands proposed by the site’s readers. Then a jury selected the 32 best artists among them. After a couple of selection rounds, the top 12 candidates faced each other in the grand final.

We clearly think the Portuguese fans have good taste, as we previously championed David in our 2016 wishlist for Portugal.

More than 3,200 votes were cast and an expert jury — including wiwiblogger Bernardo Pereira — accounted for 50% of the final decision.

Portugal is yet to reveal their selection method for Kiev, but it’s expected that the traditional and long-running Festival da Canção will return. Would you like to see David Carreira in the mix? Let us know below!

Diogo Piçarra and his lasts released songs are good as David Carreira’s songs, and Diogo Piçarra doesn’t need playback and he have a great voice 😀

As a Frenchman, I ve never heard of this singer. I m afraid tbe French music scene have no clue about Portuguese music since Linda De Sousa… Too bad since he seems to be the one able to clean the dust from Portuguese entries. 😉

@MTD: Realness in the Wiwi word is either a woman belting her vocals like a true Whitney Houston … or a man showing off his naked torso or body feeding the (homo)sexual innuendos that float through these journalistic approaches to Eurovision. Cliché-much? What else ..

@Polegend Godgarina: After 6 years you’re still holding on to that idea? Seriously? Haven’t we all moved on with our lives? What is the point of wanting Catarina to sing the same bs song with different lyrics and titles every time she tries to compete? What is the point for Catarina herself to be limited artistically to this universe that is Eurovision?

… Sooner or later someone would decide to come up an article about the the portuguese Bieber with a concerning lack of true convincing vocal talents to be now the focus of everybody’s desire to see him representing Portugal at Eurovision. Uptempo vibes? Check! No ballad-boring-traumatic-fears? Check! Vocal qualities? Who cares? Sexy body? It’s all that matters at the end of the day. Eurovision fans … at their best.

Hahahaha. Have you ever seen his live concerts? It is like Britney spears and her playback. Please forgive me but I’d rather Aurea or Diogo Piçarra.

If he can sing a modern song in English, then I’d be happy to have Portugal send him

I want Catarina Pereira to represent them. Canta por mim would’ve been Portugal’s first top 5 in 2010.

OMG this guy looks and sounds amazing. He’s like the Portuguese Pokora! Singing in Portuguese, English and French is a great mix and could bring a nice anthem. I like the song in the first video, very modern and catchy! The Eurovision fans in Portugal need to put pressure on their national broadcaster, cmon guys be passionate! David has nothing to lose by participating in Eurovision. Instead he will increase his popularity. Damn, i’d love to see Portugal doing well. I can’t see them winning with the song they usually choose so this guy looks and sounds promising. Start a… Read more »

Looks like a good choice. Portugal does need to step up it’s game though this year – if it has to be Festival da Cancao then the rules and format have to have a complete overhaul.

I am looking forward any Wiwi blog post without “realness” in it of any kind.
