Update at 13 October 2016 at 23:00 GMT: SMRTV has sent out a tweet saying that San Marino will not reveal the artist on Saturday. Shucks. However, they still promise “surprises”. Our original article remains below. We’re still keeping our fingers — and many other parts of our body — crossed that Serhat will return!

We didn’t know that our dreams could come true — but San Marino might be about to make that possible. That’s because Serhat — the Turkish singer and game show host turned Eurovision fan favourite — may very well be returning to Eurovision for the 2017 contest.

Nothing is official, but we have put on our detective gear and things look very promising. Sammarinese broadcaster RTV will be hosting their 2016-17 programming presentation show this Saturday, at 20:00 CET. An article on RTV’s website suggests we might learn some more about their Eurovision plans during that show.

That article features Serhat (and our recent article on his theoretical return) rather heavily. The article ends by saying “director Romeo promises surprises, even in the area of Eurovision…” With all that in mind, we wonder if that might mean a certain artist reveal during the presentation…

Could Serhat return?

Obviously, we would love a Serhat return. It would be his chance to use his (now infamous) holograms in Kyiv, after all.

Not only that, but RTV clearly understand Serhat’s popularity among certain Eurovision fans.

Their article talks about the “tremendous reception” received by the disco revamp of “I Didn’t Know”. Well, certainly in comparison with the original…

Serhat’s status as an odd “fan favourite” has even seen him pick up a Vision Music Award.

When you guys were done watching him perform on German TV, you voted him the winner of the Cruise Ship award in our annual VMAs.

San Marino have form when it comes to a comeback and we wouldn’t be shocked to see another one…especially given Serhat’s unique position to fund his campaign.

Other options for San Marino

Of course, there are other acts available to San Marino. Over the past years, our Wednesday Wishlists have identified the likes of production trio Delayers as possible choices. There’s also rapper Irol MC. Or maybe they could even send back their original comeback queen — Valentina Monetta!

No matter what, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the RTV presentation. As noted, the show airs at 20:00 CET this Saturday, October 15th. What do you want to see out of San Marino this year? Let us know in the comments section below!

2Robyn: Do you remember 2015 year, when Wiwi selected Nina Sublatti with Georgian TV and Nina “won” all ESC polls at the site? Now the same PR. It is not an objective opinion about strong singer for San Marino, as I think.
Sorry, but it looks like this.

Wiwi knowledge: “Please be Serhat!”. 🙂
It is better if the broadcaster himself will decide whom to choose what media will strongly suggest to him.

Wiwi knowledge? You want to say that you know everything? Can you please then predict me the winner for next year so I can make some money in betting?

Lol, you should reach to Cappicchioni, see if they have received his song and how the things are going on. That’s how you should work 😉

Regarding Vasilije: according to his Wikipedia “page”, he participated in this year’s Swiss and Montenegrin national finals. That’s false because he didn’t even get past the first round in the Swiss selection, and Montenegro didn’t even have a national final – they went internal and got Highway.

PS to Robyn: How do you know “Perfume” wasn’t chosen along with any of his other submissions? Inquiring minds want to know

I’m crossing my fingers for that Valentina-Serhat duet! And maybe they could take Michele (the “No!” Guy) to do backing vocals for them! 😀

KennyESC, I couldn’t agree more. And for Chiara and for Vasilije.

I’d like an Italian artist instead. Like, Chiara with a Un giorno di sole-like song? Plus she is not in a good time with her career so it could be a boost for that too.

Oh, and I think these Sonia, Marco, Lanna & Maria guys are Vasilije. I think he’s retarded, always sayin’ that he will represent Montenegro at ESC, and now saying that will represent San Marino. That guy is retarded, I won’t be surprised if he done other e-mails to make fake fans (?) that support that HORRIBLE noise. (Because calling Perfume “song” is insulting real songs.)

He almost qualified with the televotes this year, he needs to have his moment and reach the final. King Serhat is gonna serve the bopT of the year.

i think they should do a protest song. 3 minutes of silence as a san marino entry for eurovsion.

After the revamp, “I Didn’t Know” was actually pretty cool, if you’re into that disco-y type of genre like me lol.

@Robyn: here’s something I always thought. What happens if in a few years Vasilije becomes REALLY good at singing and represents Montenegro at the ESC, and wiwibloggs has to interview him? Wouldn’t it be awkward to do all those interviews with him when wiwibloggs has a few articles + many comments that are, lets just say, not the most complimenting? I’ve always wondered how that would play out lol xD

Only one woman has ever brought San Marino to the final. In fact before that she was the only one to ever come close! She needs to return!

She is Valentina Monetta! <3

Wasn’t the deadline passed this Monday? Can you announce anything beyond the deadline?
Does anybody actually care about San Marino? Or Serhat? The quality and standard of both haven’t exactly been good.
I know he got fans but that’s only cause the song was hilariously wrong on so many levels. I know many who don’t want Serhat back.

I think San Marino should take a break and figure out how they see ESC and what they want with it.

I would love it if they choose Lys Assia. That would give them plenty of needed media attention.

Like some others have said, I actually like Je m’adore. Thought that was a better song for Serhat so maybe it will work out for San Marino if he does comeback to do a song that fits his voice better.

And I forgot about Serhat, our favorite Turk 😉

We all know that the first version of I Didn’t Know was not… let’s say ambitious, and many people supported the disco version, hence the change.

But, if Serhat returned, it would be awesome that he sent a song that fits his deep voice could work pretty fine if staged well.

He has a song, “Je m’adore”, that I really like, and I think that that kind of song could work in ESC with Serhat’s voice.

they should not take part as a protest for EBU’s unfair televoting rule.

Serhat is an awesome artist but his Eurovision entry was his worst song ever. His discography is better than this.

I’d prefer to see a new artist, bring that rapper or an Italian artist.

PLEASE include some Italian in the entry, no more full English songs.

I actually love Vasilijs’s song. It’s really catchy and it just needs a tiny revamp to go through the semifinal at least!

Have you actually heard Vasilije’s “Perfume” song at all? I couldn’t even get halfway through it – the melody and song structure is terrible and the rapping is grating on my ears! Besides, rap is a very risky genre that hardly ever pays off, take Argo and Daz Sampson for example
