The dust has only just settled on Junior Eurovision, but full attention has turned to Eurovision 2017. Macedonian broadcaster MRT has just announced that Jana Burceska will fly the flag for the country in Kyiv next May. The decision has come internally from the broadcaster, with a song still to be announced.

About Jana Burceska

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-Z4NjkDfF4

Jana came to fame in Macedonia in 2010, when she appeared on the first season of Macedonian Idol. There, she placed 5th, ending up as the highest placing female singer.

Interestingly, one of the judges on that first season was none other than Macedonian legend Kaliopi!

Jana has gone on to participate multiple times at Skopje Fest. The years she has participated in the contest, however, were when it was not the selection process for Eurovision. Jana’s back catalogue includes a number of different styles of song too, from big band to rock to folk. We could be kept guessing about just what kind of performance we’ll be seeing from Macedonia this year!

MRT’s statement said that we’d be seeing a “modern and attractive” end product, though. We certainly can see the attractive part of that will come true with Jana at the front, y’all. There’s no word yet from MRT as to when the song will be released, so keep your eyes peeled for a further announcement.

FYR Macedonia at Eurovision

Of course, Jana has quite a task ahead of her if we look at Macedonia’s recent history. They’ve now failed to make the final since 2012, with Kaliopi’s “Crno i Belo”. In fact, that’s the only qualification they’ve had in the last nine years. Even the mighty Kaliopi herself couldn’t bring them to the final in 2016, as she finished just outside qualification in 11th, with “Dona”.

What do you think of MRT’s selection of Jana? Do you think she has what it takes to bring her country back in to the final? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

“Congrats.” Macedonian Radio Television (MRT)! Out of 2 million people in Macedonia, in which even the small children know who the Macedonian popular singers are, they succeeded in selecting a girl singer, totally unknown to the Macedonian public. While in some other cases the anonymity of the singer does not necessarily mean that he/she is a bad pick, I am afraid that the MRT’s pick is rather unfortunate in this particular case. The problem is not the singer, whom I unfortunately don’t even know and would be distasteful to criticize, but the target of my criticism is MRT and the… Read more »

@Robyn – I actually did not know that!
Please don’t get me wrong. I really liked Autumn Leaves as well. Just, not as much as Lisja Esenski. I thought they had something special there.

Great! I hope they will do a great job and qualify this time! 🙂

The problem is usually not their entries but the way they decide to stage them. For example, their 2010, 2014 and 2015 entries had potential but their staging was a mess…

I’ve been a big fan of FYROM in recent years, with sadly this year being an exception. Kaliopi’s song was just a bit too retro this year, and not even a superb performance could get it to the final.

Retro or modern, English or otherwise, it doesn’t matter; just send a great song. FYROM is generally a borderline qualifier because they send borderline quality songs.

@Coolchill
If my math is correct (it was 2011 when she sang “Dodirni mi kolena” in MI and Kaliopi mentioned 17 years… Maybe she’s born in 1993 or 1994?

Considering how bad Macedonian entries has been overall some help from Sweden wouldnot be a bad thing.

What is sure is it’s gonna be a song in English, no bilingual parts or anything. Rumor has it, MRTV has opted for the Azeri receipt this year and so far it comes out true with the choice of a young and inexperienced artist. There is a slight chance the song shopping not to be done in Sweden, but in the USA instead.

Modern and attractive. Why does this make me think there will be a Swedish surname in the songwriting credit?.

So she placed 5th in a TV show that aired 6 years ago… Doesn’t sound like a hidden gem to me. We’ll see about the song.

Daniel had the best Macedonian song for years with Lisja Esenski. Hopefully, they will avoid English and try harder to retain some cultural elements in their song instead of chasing generic pop/rnb.

I was rooting for Simona Poposka, but this looks like a great pick. I hope Macedonia won’t be underrated for once!

Macedonia choosing its artist at such an early stage is a positive sign because it gives more than enough time to mobilize the best songwriters and composers to offer a wide variety of songs to be narrowed down until the most suitable one is either selected internally or by the public at large. Here is one of Jana’s appearances on Macedonian Idol from early 2011 which certainly showcases her vocal agility. 6 years on she must have developed a unique style of her own. https://vimeo.com/21646357 (incomplete) It’s time Macedonia ends its spate of bad luck, but it’s probably a more… Read more »

@Robyn Gallagher – the Government acted on its own accords, not even respecting its own laws and proclaimed a rule about Macedonian music being played on the basis of non-existing lines in the laws for the matter.

That country is a f***** up place.

Well, this was unexpected. Should we expect a song written by Kaliopi then?

she seems like she has her head in the right generation (unlike maybe o’g3ne)
i am v pleased although maybe speaking too soon bc who knows what her song will be
