“Blackbird” lyrics – Norma John (Finland, Eurovision 2017)

Finnish indie duo Norma John will represent Finland at Eurovision 2017 with their song “Blackbird”. The pair won Finland’s national final Uuden Musiikin Kilpailiu (UMK) 2017. “Blackbird” is a heartfelt ballad, where a woman sings of how a cheerful blackbird reminds her of her lost lover.

Norma John is made up of friends Leena and Lasse, and it’s Leena who takes vocal duties on “Blackbird”. She sings to a blackbird whose bright birdsong reminds her of when the bird would sing during the happy days of her relationship. Now that the relationship is over, she doesn’t want to be reminded of it and urges the bird, “Blackbird, don’t sing”.

In the chorus, Leena tells the blackbird of the happy times with her lover and how the blackbird’s song reflected her joy – “You sang when he was in my bed/You sang when my heart sang”. But now the blackbird’s song only reminds her of the emptiness in her life – “Now you remind me of something I’ll never have”.

The simple, tender ballad conveys the feeling of heartbreak.

“Blackbird” – Norma John (lyrics)

Blackbird, blackbird, don’t sing to me
Don’t sing below my window
Fly somewhere else, don’t bother me
Don’t sing below my window

You sang when he was in my bed
You sang when my heart sang
Now you remind me of something I’ll never have
So blackbird, don’t sing
Blackbird, don’t sing

Blackbird, blackbird I am now alone
Somewhere else, go make your home
Don’t nestle here, go find lovers of your own
I am now alone

You sang when he was in my bed
You sang when my heart sang
Now you remind me of something I’ll never have
So blackbird, don’t sing
Blackbird, don’t sing

You sang when he was in my bed
You sang when my heart sang
Now you remind me of something I’ll never have
So blackbird, don’t sing
Blackbird, don’t sing
Blackbird, don’t sing
