The last time we checked in with Charlie Grönvall, he had impressed the jury at his Swedish Idol audition. The Dansk Melodi Grand Prix and Melodifestivalen star has enjoyed a smooth ride on the show. He sailed through the live shows and will now be amongst the three finalists competing in the grand final next week.

Back in September, Charlie impressed the Idol jury with his audition. They rewarded him with a golden ticket to the final audition stage.

Since then he’s become a popular contestant and has delivered week after week of impressive pop performances.

In the Melodifestivalen-themed week, the former Melfest contestant resisted the temptation to perform his own group’s 2014 entry. Instead he put his own twist on The Ark’s 2007 Eurovision entry “The Worrying Kind”.

Please note: Idol videos may be blocked to viewers outside Sweden.

Last week he paid tribute to Idol alum Måns Zelmerlöw with a cover of his recent single “Hanging on to Nothing” — and he was careful to change the “f***d up” lyric to a cleaner “messed up”.

He’s also making ground with his song “Running Wild”. It was Charlie’s performance in the “Own Songs” week and the song is currently No.11 in the Swedish Viral 50 chart on Spotify.

With his trademark emo glam style, Charlie will now join fellow contestants Liam Cacatian Thomassen and Rebecka Karlsson at the Idol grand final at Globen next Friday.

Charlie Grönvall’s pop pedigree

Charlie is the grandson of ABBA’s Benny Andersson, and his mother is Melfest queen Nanne Grönvall. And both Nanne and husband Peter Grönvall represented Sweden at Eurovision 1996. Their group One More Time placed third with “Den vilda” (The wild one).

But Charlie is starting to build up a name for himself. In 2014 he competed in Melodifestivalen with his emo rock band Little Great Things. Their song “Set Yourself Free” placed sixth in its semi-final and did not progress to the final.

Earlier this year, Charlie entered Dansk Melodi Grand Prix as part of the band Bracelet, along with his brother Felix and the Danish bass player Rebecca Krogmann. Their pop-rock song “Breakaway” did not qualify for the super final.

With six Idol alums in the line-up of Melodifestivalen 2017, perhaps we will see Charlie Grönvall return to Melfest 2018 for another shot.

Seriously wiwibloggs? Article about that? A lot of ESC stars and local national selection stars are busy all year around why don’t you write about them? Oh, right they are not from Sweden. You have been missing out a lot last few days. Your slogan says Europop news with attitude but all I see here is about Sweden. Over 40 countries are competing.
