It’s official! Despite previously considering to select its act for Kyiv 2017 internally, Moldovan broadcaster TRM announced today that a national selection will be held early next year, with a national final on 25 February. A call for submissions has already been announced, with a deadline on 18 January.

Moldova’s O melodie pentru Europa 2017 is kicking off immediately with a call for submissions, open until 18 January at 17:00. The lead vocalist has to be a citizen of the Republic of Moldova. In the case of duets or bands, foreign artists are allowed, so long as the Moldovan percentage of lead vocalists doesn’t go below 50%.

A live audition will be held on 21 January in front of an expert jury. The audition will be broadcast live on the Moldova 2 channel. Fourteen acts will advance to the next stage.

One semi-final — rather than the typical two — will be held on 24 February. Eight acts will advance to the national final on 25 February.

Four of these finalists will be chosen by the jury. Then the public will have the opportunity to choose the remaining four acts. In a bid to reduce corruption and manipulation of the televote, only one vote per telephone number will be allowed for each song. That marks a significant change from recent years.

In the final, the winner will be determined by the standard 50% jury, 50% televote split.

In case of a tie, the tie will be broken by the order decided by the youngest member of the jury. We are not kidding.

So far, Mihai Traistariu has announced his intention to send a song to Moldova, but unless it is a duet, the regulation does not allow him to enter the track.

Doinita Gherman told wiwibloggs that she is not interested in participating this year. Lidia Isac has entered a song into the Swiss selection and the regulation allows her to enter it to the Moldovan competition as well, should it not go through.

Are you excited that Moldova has decided to hold a national selection after all? And who would you like to see win O melodie pentru Europa 2017?

Thanks Robyn. I understood.Yeah excited for the live audition day. I thought Eduard should have made it into the final. He would have made it albeit for his first spot in the running order. That ‘stole his thunder’.

it’s almost like this is no longer about the best song and instead which country can make the weirdest national final rules.

Robyn Gallagher,
Moldova was part of the Ukraine some 25-30 years ago, Ukraine issues passports with Ukrainian citizenship for Moldovan citizens on their territory (Transnistria, 30% of population have Ukrainian citizenship and apply for Ukrainian social benefits like education etc like residents) – maybe that’s why they allowed Ed to participate (they can do the same for Romanian people I guess). Or it’s just new rule to obey.
regards 🙂

Well, okay… I do hope the quality of the entries is going to be higher this year (which seems highly unlikely), but Lidia participating again would make up for everything. Fingers crossed!

Can’t wait for the dated bops and messy lyrics! But I do hope they select something final-worthy this time around.

“Doinita Gherman told wiwibloggs that she is not interested in participating this year.”

What? WHAAAT? A year of OMPE without Doinita? This is unreal.

As Lidia isn’t one of the six finalists in Switzerland, yes she’s allowed Awes.

Lerika’s part Moldovan, so there’s a slight chance of her being one of the candidates for O melodie pentru Europa. But if she says “No-no”, then who else? Aliona Moon again?

I’m glad this year their national final is smaller because previously some of the acts that went through the live shows were garbage
