Top Tracks 2016 Eurovision Artists wiwibloggs 50 46

Incredibly, 2016 is almost up. And that means one thing — the return of our annual Top Tracks countdown!

As usual, the team from wiwibloggs voted for their favourite 2016 releases and recordings by and featuring Eurovision stars. Songs which competed at Eurovision or national finals were excluded (they’ve been analysed to death in our jury reviews), as were artists who’ve yet to compete on the Eurovision stage (sorry [insert name of your favourite national final act]).

After considering well over 100 songs, we finally settled on our top 50. And now we’re ready to share it with y’all. We’ll publish five tracks daily for the next ten days. Then on Christmas Eve we’ll announce our number one, giving you just enough time to send any last requests to Santa.

What song will join Loreen’s “We Got The Power”Emmelie De Forest’s “Drunk Tonight” and Lena’s “Traffic Lights” in our Hall of Fame? Let the countdown commence!

Our best songs of 2016: (50-46)

50. Eleftheria Eleftheriou “Mamma Mia”

What we said: A true pop power anthem, the track’s electro opening fades predictably into the verses before building to a belter of a chorus. Things remain pretty unremarkable musically as the uptempo tune basically loops until the end.

The power here lies in the motivational lyrics, which are repeated quite frequently and which emphasise positive affirmations to keep hope alive.

“Mamma Mia” is comforting to those of us who’ve been wounded by past love. In the chorus Eleftheria belts out that our smiles are enough for her and when tough times happen she’ll be there for us flying in the sky. It’s certainly true of her music which is always just one play button away! (Maria)

49. Anna Rossinelli “Broken Hearted”

What we saidThe melancholic moment of “Bang Bang Bang” has passed, and Anna Rossinelli and her band are delivering us top notch feel-good folk pop once more. Switzerland’s Eurovision 2011 act has gone from strength to strength since Düsseldorf, and based on their latest releases it’s not hard to see why.

Despite the title, “Broken Hearted” is an uplifting anthem of hope and perseverance. Anna sings of how she once moped over a breakup only to realise that she’s not alone.

She dedicates the track to all those who are still “disregarded” and “rootless”, reminding of them all the memories they should cherish. Your heart might not be broken, but it just might be melted. (Padraig)

48. Debrah Scarlett “To Figure”

What we saidWe’ve already reviewed Mørland’s recent releases, but his partner in crime Debrah Scarlett has been frequenting the recording studio too. Back in February she dropped “To Figure”, a wonderfully soulful number that’s a world away from the melodrama of “A Monster Like Me”.

The track is essentially a coming of age tale, narrated by Debrah’s intoxicatingly rich vocals. It’s decision time and the red-haired beauty needs space to think, to figure what’s right and what’s wrong.

We don’t know about her other choices in life, but she’s definitely on the right track musically. (Padraig)

47. Patricia Kaas “Madame Tout le monde”

What we saidTranslating literally as “Mrs. Everyone”, this is a track about the complexity of women, who, she sings, can be “insulating, rebellious, charming” but also hypnotic, loved up, single and swinging. Amen!

Whether a daughter of “Eve or Amazon”, women, the song suggests, offer up endless contradictions.

Musically it’s a simplistic composition with a generally happy, upbeat vibe. That purity gives it strength. And as always Kaas’ vocals shine. (Chris)

46. Francesca Michielin “Un cuore in due”

What we said“Un cuore in due” is everything you need to cool down during these hot summer days.

A catchy beat makes the track more modern but the melody is the most important part. And this melody will have you smitten.

The lyrics are pure romance and made our hearts melt. Between the song and its cute music video, Francesca has divided our hearts in two and taken one half with her. (Marek)
